searching door to - in the helmand province campus where they believe a disgruntled employee turned killer is holded up. >> it began early this morning after a man shot eight people at a quarry a few miles away, killing two and injuring six. >> the suspect is a local community television host and author, 45-year-old sharif allman. hello i'm cheryl jennings. >> and i'm kristen sze. let's begin with amy hollyfield at the search scene near homestead and peacock. >> reporter: even officers seemed uncertain and nervous when we got here telling us we needed to be near something we could duck behind in case he came out shooting. he was last seen in this hp parking lot behind me that is cupertino where he tried to

carjack a woman, he shot her, she is in the hospital in fair condition, he didn't get her car, they den know. then he was last seen run -- they don't know why. then he was last seen running across the street into a sunnyvale neighborhood. for several hours been doing yard to yard searches with guns drawn and fingers on the trigger. they don't know for sure he's here. they say they will never know unless they look. they've ordered a shelter in place so residents are in the middle of this. many say it is terrifying. they became involved when they first heard the attempted carjacking in the hp parking lot. some told us they were willing to talk about it, they didn't want give their name. some didn't want to show their face. >> i heard three gunshots. i thought it was a car backfiring. then my wife said cars don't backfire three times. then i thought maybe the

transformer exploded. well, that -- [ inaudible ] then he we started hearing sirens. >> security and kind of you are not believing that unless you really see or experience. you see the news on tv, other places, never thinking it could happen in your neighborhood. >> reporter: they are looking for 45-year-old sharif allman they believe he's armed with an assault rifle and handgun and he's disgruntled obviously dangerous. officers are not taking chances that's why they have a helicopter out here armored vehicles, s.w.a.t. team, search dogs all identifies have rifles drawn there. has been no sign of him at this point. police tell us he's not in communication with anyone that they know of. live in sunnyvale, amy

hollyfield, abc7 news. >> terry mcsweeney is a few miles from the search site at the lehigh cement plant in cupertino where the shootings happened. >> reporter: stevens creek and foothill is where i am. if you look across the road, looking up stevens creek cars being stopped by the officers. sheriff's deputies stopping every caricomming from the quarry and asking questions allowing them to go, nobody is positive where the gunman might be. 4:30 this morning, we know shareef allman showed up at work with a handgun and rifle and started shooting. [ sirens ] >> reporter: victim after victim was rushed from the quarry. eight victims in all, two are dead. >> the only reports we have now is he was disgruntled and unhappy whether it was work-related or private, home leted, we don't know. >> reporter: shareef allman an i at the quarry was not expected at this morning's

meeting it wasn't his shift. he brought a 40 calibre handgun and 223 calibre assault rifle. >> the incident lasted two minutes. enough time to go, shoot, takeoff and possibly get to this second location. >> reporter: a steady extreme of law enforcement personnel from all over santa clara county poured on the scene. after the shooting, terrence broussard was driving a truck out of the quarry unaware of what just happened and unaware he matched the suspect's description. he was stopped by identifies with guns drawn. >> handcuffed me, five minutes, let me up and took the cuffs off. >> reporter: if fellow employees say he had always been a smiling guy yesterday his demeanor changed 180°. >> yes he wouldn't look at us as we went by or went anywhere near his vicinity and we go to wondering what was going on.

open. many campuses kinding students inside until this dangerous situation is resolved. only 10% of students showing up at homestead high, 20% at cupertino high. both of those schools are open. we continue to gather information about the suspected killer. shareef allman is a community tv host and preaches nonviolence. david murray has tracked didn't his home. you have new information on him? >> reporter: we do. shareef allman lived here at the stone gate apartments for about 10 years according to neighbors. yes, he was an i at the quarry but he also was a very active video producer and tv program host. allman did celebrity and news maker interviews. this is a youtube video showing him interviewing reverend jesse jackson. his programs ran on create tv in san jose. create tv would not talk to us

about allman or his video productions. managers at the apartments describe him as a model tenant, quiet. residents say allman is a single parent and his 17-year-old daughter lives with him. good dresser, religious man and private. a few neighbors were invited inside his unit where they saw many photos of note ables he interviewed. >> i don't know if it is job related. he's been having problems with the job for years. that's the only thing i could think of. >> reporter: have you ever met his daughter? >> yeah. >> reporter: he's raising a daughter by himself? >> yes, she a good girl, she is work and stuff so i don't stan. >> reporter: shareef allman has had previous brushes with the law -- convicted of misdemeanor forgery and did serve a brief time in jail he also had his driver's license suspended in the 90s. management and maintenance

staff here have been told to leave for their own safety in case allman tries to return home. in san jose, david louie, abc7 news. hewlett-packard is asking employees at the cupertino office not to come to work today. the company made this statement: we are in close contact with local authorities investigating. the employee who was injured by gunfire is safe and in stable condition at a nearby hospital. environmentalists and neighbors have been trying to get the cement closed for several years accuse them of releasing harmful amounts of mercury. neighbors claim the plants no longer s in an area that includes homes, schools and parks. they've asked supervisors not to approve a permit operation that would allow the plant to continue operating for another 20 years. company officials say their mercury discharges are closely monitored and are well within safety standards.
