the process begins for the victims of a gunman who killed three and wounded seven at a rampage at a cement plant. hello, i'm cheryl jennings. >> and i'm kristen sze. big turn out to address this week's stunning tragedy. terry mcsweeney is live outside the meeting. >> reporter: we were out here this morning about 9:00 when the meeting was beginning. a vast majority of the plant's 150 workers in the hall right now this is the first time they've had a chance to come together since the shootings. it was a different world the last time these workers saw each other. >> when you are looking at second, third, fourth generation workers it is a tight-knit group. we felt it important in addition to giving updates, it was a chance for them to get together, while the plant is

still not operating and have a chance to see their colleagues and talk. >> reporter: many had not seen each other before co-worker shareef allman opened fire, killed three and wounding six and shooting another person during an attempted carjacking. you can see allman after the shootings carrying a rifle. >> no one saw this coming. i was a shock to everybody. -- it was a shock to everybody. >> reporter: there were signs something was wrong he showed off a new assault rifle over the weekend to a friend and said what he planned. >> i said what are you fitting to do with that. he was like man, these [ bleep ] at my job keep messing with me. >> reporter: there are records going back to '91 where his wife sought a divorce. she wrote, he start add using me, i did not take his gun, but he did not believe me.

allman says she was jealous of his new relationship. yesterday morning he was discovered in sunnyvale. >> all three deputies at the scene fired shots and the subject was pronounced dead at the scene. >> reporter: the meeting going on inside the town hall is open and it could go two hours, four hours, it is being given to the company by the city of cupertino, take their time and get the job done. david louie is here. if some members of the kaiser family want to talk about what happened up there he will have that tonight at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. >> >> oakland police have arrested a suspect in a robbery and shooting that left a woman seriously wounded and closed part o 580 for three hours yesterday. a gunman shot a woman in the legs after she refused to give up her purse.

the shooter drove off, crashed on the 580 trance ramp and took off on -- on foot. chp searched the freeway causing major traffic delays for hours no word where the suspect was found in morning. the victim is recovering. police have finished their investigation into the deadly dog mauling of a pregnant pacifica woman. they still don't know what caused her pet pit bull to attack. the 32-year-old died of massive blood loss and shock in august. officers ultimately killed her 2-year-old pit bull when he charged them during their investigation. official say a necropsy on the 75 pound dog did not turn up disease or condition that would explain the attack. the family says the dog had no history of violence. a group of two dozen former university of california chance horse has proposed a drastic tuition increase. uc president convened a group

in the summer and have come back with a suggestion of raising tuition to $24,000 a year for california students and increasing the number of out of state students who pay mo more. the recommendation is not binding --. federal prosecutors holding a news conference in sacramento to announce details of crackdown on california pot dispensaries. this week some property and business owners received letters giving them 45 days to shutdown dispensaries or face prosecution. california's voter approved law conflicts with federal drug laws. the letters explain the property could be subject to seizure and forfeiture to the u.s. government. penalties could be added if the drug is being -- is being

sold within 1,000 feet of parksg?, playgrounds. >> the economy added just enough jobs last month to ease fears of a new recession but hiring is too weak to buy down unemployment. americans voice their frustrations about the economy. >> reporter: some good news for the struggling u.s. economy. the nation added 103,000 jobs last month. better than economists were expecting. the unemployment rate didn't bundle from 9.1%, a rate the white house called unexceptably high. that number is significant that means 14 million americans were looking for work last month, but couldn't find it. the average length of unemployment is 40.5 weeks. john boehner said today's report is more bad news. >> after three years of false who hopes -- hopes and broken promises americans continue to be left asking the question,

where are the jobs? >> reporter: many asking the same thing. protests growing across the nation as americans stress frustration with wall street and anger about a lack of jobs. >> we have more than enough means, resources, we just need them to put money back into this country. >> reporter: since january, the nation has added one million jobs. more than six million are needed to get back to where we were before the recession. president obama says some estimate his new plan would create 1.9 million jobs. yesterday he issued a challenge to republicans. >> >> the president: they need to explain to me, more importantly to the american people, why they are opposed and what would they do? >> reporter: republicans are adamantly opposed to to the bill. they say it is another stimulus paid for with tax increases. karen traverse, abc news, washington. helping those left behind as america marks the 10th anniversary of the war in afghanistan. the group helping hundreds of

coping. >> reporter: in this refuge she can take her burqa off. afghanistan is the land where men make the rules. but this is a neighborhood full of women. women who built these walls. women who built their homes by hand. women who have nowhere else to go. because she and her neighbors are all widows. 10 years of war and 20 years of conflict before that, have mass produced afghan widows. there are hundreds of thousands in afghanistan, perhaps two million. she lost her husband in a suicide attack last february in here, she finds hope. she has started a small business making bread for her neighbors. it doesn't get her much, but three or four dollars a day, but it is a start. when i met her. she was nervous to be in a foreign man's company. she refused to take her burqa off but sat proudly next to her daughter. do you have hope for the

future? >> only god can make it better she says. god willing, my daughter will have a better life. 10 years later, women have made massive strides here. especially in education, and in health care. it is a start, but it is not enough. >> there's no doubt [ inaudible ] especially in the big cities where there is security. i don't think it is satisfactory. >> reporter: for her the future will only be bright if her daughter can escape the poverty. she is much more free today than 10 years. there's still a long way to go. abc news, kabul. more on women now this year's nobel peace prize has been awarded to three men for their struggle for women's rights and safety two winners are in liberia johnson sirleaf is the 72-year-old president and leymah gbowee is a peace activist. they organized way across

a special celebration in austria today for arnold schwarzenegger. he returned to his hometown to inaugurate a museum dedicated to him. it opened in july located in the two-story house where he was born. it includes his first barbell, bed which he slept as a child, movie memorabilia including several lifesized terminator models and the wood desk he sat behind while he was governor of california. >> another star. the world's most eligible royal has just arrived in the u.s.. prince harry is coming to california for two months of

cruz and inland. tonight temperatures in the 40s, mainly inland along the coast with low to mid 50s around the bay shore. low pulling away, weak cold front rolls through brought some high clouds otherwise quiet. high pressure moving in. pushing the jet stream well to the north. this is going to camp out for about seven days. we won't have any rain, which is great for the fleet week activities, especially the blue angels tomorrow and saturday. 73 saturday, mostly sunny. a few more clouds especially in the morning sunday. then we should have almost unlimited visibility so they will be able to fly their high routine. heading to the sierra, temperatures on the rise and the snow will be melting. 51 in tahoe to 63 about sun by sunday, yosemite 60 today, 70 by sunday. you can see warming trend away from the coast this weekend. we'll see temperatures jump

for coming in, call the east bay spca. who would -- who wouldn't want to take that lovely dog home. something else equally fun. fleet week weekend. not just about ships, and the roar of the engines. >> it is already an opportunity for san francisco emergency responders to gain valuable skills training with sailors and marines. >> reporter: firefighters are usinging this opportunity to teach sailors and marines -- visiting from san diego. here's one of the stations that brought three lessons to learn today. at this one they are building a three post vertical shore. this is something that would hold up like a collapsed floor in the event of an earthquake would hold it up so they can go in and rescue someone. here's video of other things that they are running today. they are learning how to leverage, shoring up concrete.

how to use leverage to shore up concrete to get it off something that is crushed. in another location they are learning how to use concrete -- if and when the big quake hits the marines and sailors would be calledded to help us. they are not used to working in an urban environment, so they are using fleet week and their visit here as a chance to prepare. >> the military is going to play a huge role in supporting us and partneringing with us and assisting us. -- you don't want to meet somebody on the battlefield for the first time. >> this is a core mission we've been tasked with this from time to time, as recent as support in the floods in pakistan. so it comes across our table. although it is just not something that we put a lot of time into. we don't have that kind of expertise in the marine corp. turning to somebody who does this for a living is a great opportunity for us.
