highway and feels confident it is safe to drive on. the far right lanes will be open -- won't be opening yet because they want to repair the guardrail that was damaged. they are hoping that will be completely open by 12, they are not certain at this point this has been a mess to cleanup. the big rig truck was the last of the three vehicles to crash in this chain reaction. it caused the most damage. the truck blocked all four of the southbound 101 lanes and the leaking diesel caught on fire. >> it looked like another vehicle involved in a separate collision which created another collision. >> reporter: the driver of the big rig was taken to the hospital with a woman driving one of the other cars. they are both pecked to be okay. thanks to another woman who ran -- ran to he did had the driver of the truck. >> a good samaritan pull the driver of the big rig from the fire.

>> reporter: crews had to deal with the fire, victims, leaking diesel and traffic, also a man who wanted to perform a rescue. but then turned violent. >> he wanted to help out. there was no one to help and he got into an altercation with officer. he hit the officer. >> reporter: they arrested him. 16th street at san bruno closed because pieces of guardrail fell on to the street and some was still dangling. >> most people took alternate routes, we appreciate the media, they put out the word fast. >> reporter: it was still a mess with a major highway shutdown. despite our reporting on the news, twitter and facebook, there were still people trying to get on to the highway who had no idea this happen ed. >> i didn't know about it. >> reporter: then there were people who got on to southbound 101 and weren't sure what they were going to do after that >> i have to get to the airport. i have 45 minutes.

hopefully, it won't be too bad. >> reporter: what are you going to do? >> run. >> reporter: it was a rough morning. looks like the worst is almost behind us. they are about to open two laneatq hoping to have it all open by noon that could change. sue hall is standing by to give you advice. now, 20 minutes away, waiting for a caltrans cone truck to cordon off the lanes so the two left lanes will be open asan as that truck gets in place. take 5th to 6th to 280 south. bart the best way to an individual this. northbound 101 still snow 280. again, bart is the best way to get around until they get those lanes open. san mateo bridge problem-free. bay bridge thraolz accident, a ghost town at this hour, so people have gotten the word.

2780 southbound 101 northbound and -- 280, southbound 101, northbound san mateo bridge. that's the latest. think about in the next time you drive over a bridge or overpass, a large number of them in terrible shape according to a new report. transportation for america says there are more than 500 bay area bridges and overpasses with serious structural problems. terry mcsweeney joining us in san francisco. >> reporter: transportation for america chose this spot in san francisco to he will straight its conclusion that -- to illustrate its conclusion that one in five bridges or overpasses are structurally deficient. they say all you have to do is look up. you can see the cracks on the side of the northbound 101 freeway this is only 200 yards from where amy was standing talking the crash that closed 101 earlier today.

this overpass one of the struures identified in the record. the richmond san rafael bridge with 380 plus bridges andoverpasses in four north and east bay area counties are according to the federal highway administration, structurally deficient. that they need work, maybe just paving or perhaps reinspection. they are just getting old. according to the group -- >> even when money is hard, it is important to realize where you are going to spend your dollars. transportation fixing up making sure our bridges are safe is where smart dollars should be spent. >> reporter: talking about federal dollars there. senator er -- senator boxer is helping write the new transportation funding bill. transportation for america has identified 21% of bridges and overpasses in need of with work. makes us number two metropolitan area in the nation, only pittsburgh has

administrators office they are still saying they are going to take a hands off approach to this camp and the other small one near lake merit despite issues of health and safety. there's still 100 tents on frank ogawa plaza. this demonstration began 10 days ago as part of the nationwide movement. since it has morphed up into their own community. they say they have new laws. to address a variety of issues not necessarily related to wall street or corporate greed. yesterday mayor quan walked through to get a look. the city does express growing concern about rats, unsanitary conditions, alcohol and in some cases threats and intimidation. the mayor did not address why this is being allowed to continue in her city while others in san francisco have clammed down. last night a splinter group set up a separate camp near

lake merit that has one councilmember concerned. >> at some point this becomes an embarrassment to oakland? >> i think it is the opposite san francisco has had riots in the streets and department stations and violence in the streets. we have not. i think we are containing it, containing it in one place is our choice. >> reporter: city administrators office says police are keeping an eye on things from a distance. early they are week this is what happened when a half dozen police came to address threats being made to reporters. the officers were marched out of the area by the demonstrators. the city has presented those who are camping with a list of requirements for them to continue to camp here. according to the city administrator's office, the campers have complied with about 2/3 of those. again, they are saying that if

one bay area food bank is making a special plea ahead of the holidays. we'll let you

sheriff's deputies in ohio are still on the hunt for two more escaped while animals, a monkey and a wolfs. dozens were released from

the cooler starting to thin out moisture and take away the clouds and bring sun back. it has been particularly difficult up in the north bay where we still have a lot of cloud cover. around the bay to the coast you can see how quick things are starting to break. let's look at what going on as far as temperatures. we are running still in the 50s around san francisco. everybody else in the 60s. that mild start helped once we got sun. low to mid 60s around the monterey bay inland. with one to five degrees cooler than this time yesterday. mostly sunny today, breezy and cooler inland. that coolness around the bay and coast is filtering into our inland valley. clouds return tonight probably won't see as much drizzle as we saw this morning. at the coast with we had a couple hundreds of an inch. if you want sun and warmer weather and you want to go to the beach to enjoy it, i got it for new weekend.
