distracted, happy and overjoyed. they cannot stop watching the footage about gadhafi's death. the libyan exile didn't believe it until he saw the picture of gadhafi's bloodied body. that's when he really realized the nightmare was finally over. >> it with was a big relief. it has been overdue for 42 years. that's, you know, not a short time. it is a life. >> reporter: he came to the united states for college in 1974. once he graduated he wanted to return home, but realized he couldn't because of gadhafi's rule. his family is still there. during his reign, gadhafi took over his parents' business and threw his brother in prison. >> at within time he criticized the government -- at one time he criticized the government and they an used -- they accused him of trying to revolt against gadhafi and put

him six years in prison. >> i have hate for him. iñivéu despise him decision gus. >> reporter: 22-year-old samaya first saw the reports. she joyously woke up her parents to tell them the news. >> my parents deserve this more than i do. so i wanted them to experience it with me. >> reporter: she says even though she has never been to libya, gadhafi stole from her too. >> we were deprived too. i was deprived of my family, my cousins. i was deprived of learning my lange my parents' mother tongue. >> reporter: it doesn't bother either of them to his body kicked in the streets. or the fact that he won't get a trial. >> he could have had a safe exit. he could have done something to save this bloodshed, but he didn't. i think he deserve what he got today. >> reporter: the family is

hoping to have a celebration in weekend. they want to throw a party. they also hope to book plane tickets back to labor libya in the next cup of weeks. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. secretary of state clinton is now in pakistan, demanding that authorities there step up counterterrorism efforts against insurgents. a camera was rolling at the moment she began getting the first reports of gadhafi's death. >> wow! . unconfirmed, yeah. confirmed reports about gadhafi being captured. unconfirmed, yeah. we've had a bunch of those before. we've had him captured a couple of times. >> reporter: this time it was real. clinton was in libya yesterday to offer aid to the new transitional . >> one of gadhafi's sons was

killed and another was injured and captured. gadhafi's death has prompted lots of discussion on our facebook page if you would like to weigh in -- that with would be facebook do the come/ abc7 news. a security guard at a richmond apartment complex is in custody now after a shootout last night that left another security guard in critical condition. police say door ran long nearly killed a child -- say doran long nearly killed a child during his rampage. >> reporter: i'm at the crescent park apartment complex in richmond this is where doran long had his second shooting of the night. he was a security guard here. that's the security office where the shooting took place. police say there was an argument between him and two security guards. he went home grabbed a shotgun and rifle shot up a house there before returning here. we go become to the anchors for president obama's talk about libya. >> we are sorry to interrupt

terry mcsweeney's report. we'll bring that to you later today. in the meantime we have a special report coming up. >> president obama is going to speak about gadhafi. we are going to show you video, i warn you it is graphic and grew . we believe this is the -- and gruesome. we believe this is the moment when libyan forces seize gadhafi. he was shot after gadhafi tried to escape from a hole or drain pipe. clearly then. he's believe to have died on the way to -- clearly alive then. he's believed to have died on the way to get some sort of treatment. this is several months after nato authorized the bombing campaign against gadhafi's regime. nearly 40 years after gadhafi took over as a 27-year-old colonel. i'm joined by christiane amanpour, the last western journalist to speak to gadhafi. for most of those 40 years he

was a nemesis to the united states. >> he was. libya sponsored terrorism against people in europe, pan am 103. he has been a nemesis and the most hated villain amongst the united states people that is clear. also, somebody said to me today, he's a vampire to his people. as president obama comes to tart speaking, a vampire. >> -- comes to start speaks, a vampire. % president good afternoon. today the government of libya announced the death of muammar gadhafi. this marks the end of a long and painful chapter for the people of libya. who now have the opportunity to determine their own destiny in a new and democratic libya. for four decades the gadhafi regime rule the libyan people with an iron fist. basic human rights were denied. innocent civilians were detained, beaten and killed. libya's wealth was squandered.

the enormous potential of the libyan people was held back. terror was used as a political weapon. today, we can definitively say that the gadhafi regime has come to an end. the last major regime strong hold -- strong homes have fallen. the new government is consolidating the control over the country. in one of the -- one of the world's longest serving dictators no more. one year ago, the notion of a free libya seemed impossible. then, the libyan people rose up and demanded their rights. when gadhafi and his forces started going city to city, town by town to brutalize men, women and children, the world refused to stand idlely by. faced with the potential of mass atrocities and a call for help from the libyan people, the united states and our friends and allies stopped gadhafi's forces in their

tracks. a coalition that included the united states, nato and arab nations persevered through the summer to protect libyan civilians. meanwhile, the courageous libyan people fought for their own future and break the back of the regime. this is a momentous day in the history of libya. the dark shadow of tyranny has been lifted. with this enormous promise the libyan people now have a great responsibility. to build an inclusive and tolerant and democratic libya that stands as the ultimate rebuke to gadhafi's dictatorship. we look forward to the announcement of the country's liberation. the quick formation of an interim government. and a stable transition to libya's first free and fair elections. we call on our libyan friends to continue to work with the international community to secure dangerous materials and

to respect the human rights of all libyans, including those who have been detained. we are under no illusion, libya will travel a long and winding road to full democracy. there will be difficult days head. but the united states, together with the international community, is committed to the libyan people. you have won your revolution. and now we will be a partner as you form a future that provides dignity, freedom and opportunity. for the region today's events prove once more that the rule of an iron fist inevitably comes to an end. across the arab world, citizens have stood up to claim their rights. youth are delivering a powerful rebuke to dictatorship. those leaders who try to deny their dignity will not succeed. for us here in the united states, we are reminded today of all those americans that we lost at the hands of

gadhafi's terror. their families and friends are in our thoughts and in our prayers. we recall their bright smiles, their extraordinary lives and their tragic deaths. with we know that nothing can close the wound of their loss but we stand together as one nation by their side. -- for nearly eight months, many americans have provided extraordinary service in support of our efforts to protect the libyan people. and to provide them with a chance to determine their own destiny. skilled diplomats have helped to lead unprecedented global response. our brave pilots have flown in libya's skies. our sailors have provided support off libya's shores and our leadership at nato has helped guide our coalition. without putting a single u.s. service member on the ground, we achieved our objectives. and our nato mission will soon come to an end.

this comes at a time when we see the strength of american leadership across the world. we've taken out al-qaeda leaders and put them on the path to defeat. we are winding down the war in iraq and have begun a transition in afghanistan. now, with working with -- in libya with friends and allies we've demonstrated what collective action can achieve in the 21st trip. of course, above all, today belongs to the people of libya. this is a moment for them to remember all those who suffered and were lost under gadhafi and look forward to the promise of a new day. i know the american people wish the people of libya the very best in what will be a challenging, but hopeful days, weeks, months and years ahead. thank you very much. president obama confirming muammar gadhafi is dead.

not just mean that gadhafi is dead, therefore, there will be a democratic republic of libya. it is going to take a long time before human rights in that country, law and order, law enforcement have been accomplished and a system of government that respects all the people of libya has been established. you are right george, this does appear another vindication for the president's foreign policy when it comes to dictators to the arab spring and taking on terrorists. >> let me ask christiane amanpour about that arab spring. revolution sweeping across the mideast and africa. dictators are going. we don't know what is going to replace them. >> that is true although this is the first day of the post gadhafi era. this arab spring is historic in this part of the world. so long a nemesis to america in so many ways. the real concentration will have to be on getting a stable government now. maybe getting these national

>> back to our story in richmond. a security guard is in custody after a shootout last night that left another security guard in critical condition. terry mcsweeney joins us with more. >> reporter: i'm at the crescent park apartment complex. according to police this is the site of the second shooting from last night by door ran long. they say it began with an argument at the security office. long left, went home to concord, grabbed a shotgun and rifle and return odd to settle the argument. bullet holes are everywhere at the apartment complex security office. police say 50-year-old doran long had an argument with fellow guards and returned with weapons to finish the argument. >> we responded to numerous

calls of shots fired. we located one security officer who was suffering from gunshot wounds. two officers decked us -- pointed out who the suspect was. said he was also a security officer. >> boom, boom, like that, a lot. >> reporter: we spoke with a resident. >> my daughter i said are you okay? she said yes mommy. >> reporter: police say the violent night began in concord when long pumped 30 bullets in the house of a neighbor with whom he had a dispute. police say one bullet nearly killed a 9-year-old child. >> i seen it after the fact the little girl was shook up because the bullets went past her head. the mom was sleeping. dad was out here, shocked. >> reporter: out of all the coincidences this woman lives at the apartment complex in richmond where the security guard was shot but was staying with a relative

it was warm now it is cold again. >> it is going to get warm again. it depends on the cloud we have still a lot over the city now. as we look to the west from south beach this morning, the clouds are due to the facthere'g in. the colder, heavier air the heavier cold air is pushing it up and creating these clouds. you can see it on satellite it is starting to erode from the east bay and south bay stubborn in the north bay. visibility still a mile in santa rosa.

it is much cooler in many areas except for where the sun is out. antioch, concord and fairfield, one degree warmer. 50s north bay into san francisco, fremont, livermore, los gatos everybody else in the 60s. monterey bay mid to upper 50s. mostly sunny, won't be as cool as yesterday once the sun comes out. partly cloudy, cooler tonight patchy fog in the north bay valleys. warmer weekend possibly hot, small fire danger next week. clouds at the coast 60s there to mid to upper 60s around san francisco, richmond and oakland. 70s for the ref us. south bay six -- for the rest of us. south bay 60. mid to upper 70s inland. morning clouds less likely especially over the weekend. that's why right now i have those two days as the hottest in the afternoons. we are going to keep an eye on monday, tuesday, wednesday
