closed captioning by closed captioning services,inc downtown oakland has a big knows cleanup after violence overnight following a peaceful demonstration by protesters, upset about the struggle economy. several businesses were damaged. -- >> this is what happened after most of the 7,000 occupy oakland demonstrators went home. some threw concrete chunks and fire bombs at police. officers spokened with tear gas and arrests near 16th and broadway. protests were injured.

>> the port of oakland saw some demonstrators this morning they were hoping to shut it down as they did last night. right now the port is open. good morning i'm cheryl jennings. >> and i'm kristen sze. live team coverage. terry mcsweeney is at the port of oakland.çç >> katie marzullo is waiting for an update from police and city s. -- city officials. >> we begin with amy hollyfield where there's a lot of cleaning up. >> reporter: they are making progress. this wall was covered with graffiti so were the windows after several attempts of scrubbing, most of it is gone. it is difficult to get it entirely off-the-wall. some of the protesters say they tried to prevent this from happening. but the activists who wanted to cause damage couldn't be stopped. oakland police said they made the decision to fire tear gas and bean bags on this crowd after people threw bottles, roman candles and lit flares at officers.

protesters shattered windows up and down broadway and sprayed graffiti on almost every building on the street. the trouble started around midnight when protesters decided to occupy an abandoned building. police cleared the building two hours later. it wasn't until a little after 4 a.m. until the situation quieted down and police left. the group that caused this trouble appears to be a splinter group not a part of occupy oakland. protesters with the occupy movement said they were disappointed by the violence. some tried to prevent windows from being broken and left notes explaining occupy oakland was not responsible. >> i wish that people would have a consensus on what to do during a protest and not do this kind of stuff. >> reporter: some protesters started cleaning up the mess. they first focused on the windows of tully's coffee shop saying they didn't want business owners to see this when they came to work. >> this is not our message.

we want to rebuild our community. >> reporter: the manager of tully's was in tears when she saw her store. a group had broken her window and looted her coffee shop. >> this is my baby i work hard providing an environment that is comfortable for my customers. >> reporter: cleanup crews say it will take a while to get the downtown back to normal. private businesses and city hall have windows to replace. people surveying the damage were debating whether this protest method is necessary. >> i don't think it is really representative what is going on in terms of the occupy movement. >> i want to encourage people to get to know people even the [ unintelligible ] on a human level they are kids that are impatient for change. >> i believe they shouldn't have terrorized the situation. it takes a lot to get your point across to oakland. >> reporter: the manager at

tully's blames the mayor. she believes this is out of control. she would like to see the mayor controlled and do something about this. we've been trying to reach out to mayor quan this morning. we haven't heard back. she is;úh(ñ planning to hold a g later today. we are hoping to -- hear from police about arrests and injuries. so far they have it at least 70, probably more arrests. they say a number of police and protesters were hurt but they haven' told us how many. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> everyone is waiting to hear from the mayor and the police chief. let's go to katie. when can we expect to hear from them? >> reporter: good morning. we've been waiting and the latest estimate is that the mayor will address the media around noon today. in the meantime we understand staff is compiling the statistics from last night. the total damage that was done on the -- and the number of arrests that were may.

those numbers hope to become clear maybe around noon today. the mayor has a lot of questions to answer. she was pretty much touting yesterday there would be minimal police presence at the general strike yesterday and there was, for a while. but the video you are looking at now shows you how that turned out in the light of day this morning, there is quite a bit of damage downtown oakland as well as vandalism. questions for the mayor include, are you still happy with your plan? what would you have done anything differently and where does the city go from here? it does not look like the protesters have any intense of going away a lot to learn from city officials including the mayor and police chief about what happened last night and what happens next? we should hear that sometime around noon. katie marzullo, abc7 news. terry mcsweeney continues our live coverage from the port of oakland. >> reporter: what a difference

a day makes. yesterday thousands came out here and shutdown the port of oakland. this morning fewer than a dozen came out with the same goal in mind. this morning's blockade of the port adeline entrance did not bid well with folks who wanted to go to work. one driver forced his way past. a second vehicle -- >> it ain't worth it dude. >> reporter: -- was denied. truck coming down the bridge were forced to back up. some port workers didn't get the point. >> if we don't get our shift we are going to lose our houses. we are going to be in the same position as them. they are not helping. they are targeting the wrong areas. >> reporter: general strikes are the weapon of the people -- on the bottom, of the 99% that including shutting down the port, anything that we can shutdown. >> reporter: one day after

drawing perhaps 10,000 to the port as part of a one day strike occupy oakland attracted maybe 10 protesters this morning. >> these people who did come they are troopers. did not sleep last night. the people who are here, are here because they really care about this. >> what you have done yesterday and throughout the night you had the attention of the word. >> reporter: 8:00 this morning the president of the local chapter of the longshoremen's union told the protesters they made their point. >> let's open the port and allow truckers and the other working people to go to work. >> reporter: a short time later the blockade came down as quickly as it had gone up. protesters joined the union president for breakfast and discussed what had been accomplished. one thing for certain, it left with a lasting impression. the port of oakland still dealing with the after affects of questioned's protest. they are slowly getting back

to normal. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. it remains unclear if a driver will faceç kh@rges after witnesses say he intentionally rammed his car into at least two protester. they within to e hospital after the car hit them -- they went to the hospital after the car hit them last night. bart police handled the initial investigation. officers questioned the driver and then allowed him to leave. you can see in this home video one protester pounded on the hood of the car. it appears the driver gunned the engine and hit the man. oakland city council tonight expected to take up resolution in support of the occupying encampment calling on city officials to with protest for the safe and lawful use outside frank ogawa plaza as a 24 hour demonstration site. meeting begins 5:30. meanwhile occupy protesters in san francisco plan to start a

march now to show solidarity with demonstrators at the summit for thes]ç]4 wealthiest nations in the world the g-20 summit outside the federal reserve bank office on market street the crowd will march up market to the wells fargo building on california street. >> that summit is underway today in france where the g-20 leader are focusing on greece threatening the euro currency and global economy. >> the president: the most important aspect over the next two case is resolve the financial crisis here in europe. president sarkozy has shown extraordinary leadership on this issue. here at the g-20 we have to flesh out more details about how the plan will be fully and decisively implemented. >> earlier this week the greek prime minister an puns noed a referendum, he wanted to -- announced a referendum. now there is indication he is calling off that ref den dumb.
