outside. -- here you have protesters having a meeting debriefing about what happened last night and gearing up for another day of action. uc berkeley police hit protesters with batons and grabbed them by their hair. activists were trying to start occupy cal. uc officials said tents and sleeping bags are in violation of campus policy. when police allowed three tents and several sleeping bags to stay, from 2 a.m. on, the protesters felt like they had won their battle with police. >> i don't know what the goal was but we got our tents and we are spending the night. so i guess it is a victory. >> reporter: the activists who stayed all night said it was a cold long night. >> i'm proud of anyone who stayed and supported us through thick and thin. >> reporter: by day breadth occupy cal last -- lost most

of is steam. most took down their tents. >> we don't have enough people to save the tents. we feel it would be more useful tonight. >> reporter: a handful replained in sproul plaza throughout the morning most not students. even those who are not the stay out all night types, they are finding other ways to support the movement. some teachers held class in the plaza to show support to the movement. >> we have our lives to live too. we can't do that all night. but we are doing what we can. >> reporter: several classes being held out here now. i've called a university spokeswoman on police department several times today to ask why they reversed course about whether tents would be allowed here of they have not returned my calls. protesters gearing up for another day of action.

he they say they want occupy cal to be as big as occupy wall street. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. in oakland protesters gathered last night and voted to withdrew resolution calling for future demonstrations to remain peaceful. a small number have openly call for the use of violences attack ticks to get out their message that vote came -- came hours after city leaders call the camp at frank ogawa outside city hall to shutdown immediately. city officials have cut off streetlights and a faucet protesters had been using to get water. police may be inundated and overwhelmed but high-tech help is on the way. a neighborhood group is taking an unusual step to make sure community members have access to an person crime fighting tool. terry mcsweeney is live in the montclair district with the story. >> reporter: the money claire district, a beautiful one, nice -- the montclair district,

a beautiful one, nice houses, crime has spiked. the safety and improvement council is asking people to get surveillance cameras to deter and solve crimes. if the council has its way there will be more, many more of these all over this neighborhood. >> we take public safety as a priority. we have enough concern from the residents, via e-mail or direct contact telling us they are looking for added security measures. >> reporter: sat montclair elementary surveillance cameras will be in focus. -- you can by a camera for $300 and get tech advice. rodney stopped by to see what a news crew was doing in his neighborhood and now is interested in the cameras. especially after three break-ins on his street in the past week. >> kicked the doors in and grabbed occurrences as opposed to someone coming in the house and trying to take the

high in a battle over banning students from wearing american flag t-shirts on sing sing. four boys were sent -- on cinco de mayo four buys were sent home for refusing to turn their shirts inside out or changing them last year. administrators were afraid the shirts would insight violence it the -- would incite violence. more than 100,000 medicare beneficiaries in california will have to switch coverage quickly because anthem blue cross has cancelled its medicare advantage plan. it would have had to increase premiums or cut benefits so it decided to withdraw. critics say they made a preemptive move before the government forces private insurers to roll back costs. the deadline to switch plans is december 7th. man on the run for nearly four -- 40 years after being accused of murder turn himself

in today. ronald bridgeforth surrendered this morning. he said he had nothing to do with the murder of a san francisco police officer. he plans to face charges in connection with and you related shootout in south san francisco. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: after more than four decades on the run 67-year-old ronald bridgeforth is no long are a fugitive at 8:40 five in morning he accompanied by his wife and his lawyer showed up at the hall of justice in redwood city. we know a little more about him. -- bridgeforth has been living in ann arbor, michigan under an alias. married with two sons. he got his masters while he was in hiding. he was a counselor at a local community college. he skipped bail in 1969 after pleading guilty in connection with a shootout with south san francisco police.

he told us this is the reason why he surrendered. >> this seems to be the right thing to do. in the end it is always about family. >> reporter: what do you mean? >> let's just go in. he's taking responsibility for his actions. he wants to be a model for his sons. he wants his sons to continue to be proud of him for the man that he is today. and not on that tragic day of november 5th, 1968. >> reporter: in court his lawyer asked that he be released on his own recognizance. the prosecutor asked for $100,000 bail. after hearing arguments from both sides the judge set bail at $25,000. bridgeforth was also facing a more serious charge. a charge of murder in the murder of san francisco police sergeant john young who was killed in 1971.

a very quick changing of the guard at penn state in which jerry sandusky was charged with sexually abusing eight boys. the university fired head football coach joe paterno last night. that move lead to riots in the streets. >> reporter: the new head coach tom bradley was thrown into the spotlight with a news conference this morning. he said he takes the job with no reservations. it seems students and some fans have a huge problem with how the university is handling

the sex abuse scandal. what started as a rally in support of coach paterno quickly evolved into a riot that included penn state free tessers flipping a tv station's van and attacki -- police with rocks and bottles. it began with the firing that most referred to as joe pa. paterno was fire admitted claim he did nothing to alert police to allegations that his longtime defensive coordinator jerry sandusky was sexually abusing children. paterno addressed a large crowd outside his home. >> get a good night sleep, study. we still got things to do. all right. >> reporter: this morning paterno's replacement, coach tom ly said he has no reservations about take -- tom bradley said he has no reservations about taking the top job. >> i'm going to do the job. to the ongoing investigation i'm not going to say anything
