mario mendez spent 19 years assembling cars in fremont. today he brushed up his resume to go to work at the old plant, not at the old wages. >> before i was looking for a higher paying job. now i've been dropping the standard and i'm dropping resumes all over the place and not being picky. >> reporter: the lowest paid workers made $30 an hour. tesla nonunion jobs star at $12 an hour. >> most of the folks coming into the employment center are former workers with experience of making cars. >> we are applying to tesla, creating a profile, getting the user password ready for them to upload their resume so when the positions open up they will be able to apply >> reporter: the hiring is made possible by a 465 million dollar energy department loan that came through last week.

electric car builder tesla can make more of its next generation model, which will sell for $4500, with a $7500 tax credit. the roadster costs twice as much. don't compare this loan to solyndra. at least don't do it around sal lopez the difference is they have some orders already in. they have their production full for a year or zoe means this is clients that have ordered that car whatever model that may be. they already have sold it. it is only a matter of building it. >> reporter: mr. lopez is hopeful this tesla plant in fremont is going to bring back more of the 4,500 workers laid off when that plant went under. we called tesla, they didn't get back to us. probably too busy making cars. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. occupy oakland protest evicted are trying a different tactic at a different location.

they've set up tents on a property they say is in foreclosure at 18th and linden. they say they are confronting banks. not all neighbors are supportive. amy hollyfield joins us live. >> reporter: some cone want them here. there's a question as to -- some don't want them here. there's a question as to whether they are trespassing. they tell us they have permission from the homeowner to be here of the we asked the owner, she said she did not give them permission. at this point, this group is not going anywhere. these occupy oakland protesters thought they found the perfect spot to protest the banks. a property being foreclosed on. they are not receiving a warm welcome from the neighborhood. >> they are in my way.y.y. because they are keeping me up. my dog barked all last night. >> reporter: melvin welsh is renting the home he says his land lady never said a about problems with the

bank. he called the police. >> keep it to the bank, go to the bank where she is having the problem and argue. don't come squat. >> reporter: the police came out and talk today to both parties and left when the protesters insisted the property owner gave them permission to be here. we spoke with the property owner and she said, she did not give them permission. >> we are rectifying the situation we are calm, peaceful handing out hot coffee and doughnuts to the local community. >> we live here. why den you go downtown and do that. -- why don't you go downtown and do that? >> reporter: a stopped by to complain. the protesters tried to explain their tactic, but it didn't go over welch >> banks have to pay them or oust to leave so we can afford to pay them to keep their land. -- >> you that i is going to happen? >> listen, -- that's -- [ talking over each other ]

katehi talking with some of the protesters. 74 tents went up last night. right now no plans to dismantle the camp. the uc system's president has call the chance lores of all 10 campuses -- chancellors of all 10 campuses and reminded them of people's rights to protest peacefully. the police chief and two officers involved in the incident are on leave. students are calling for the chancellor to resign. she said she won't. in santa rosa police cleared out an encampment at city hall at 4:00 this morning. it has been up three weeks. police did not make arrests. at least 27 who applied for camping permits are being allowed to return. officials say they've been warning protesters this raid has been coming for nearly a week. right now uc berkeley students in pajamas and sleeping bags are taking part in a mass sleep-out in front

of sproul plaza as part of occupy cal. this month students pitched tents and campus police responded aggressively. occupy cal said it wants the focus back on issues such as saving education. caltrans will defend its bay bridge inspection procedures during a hearing this afternoon. a senate committee is looking into allegations that inspector falsified his safety reports on the new span. caltrans has turned over thousands of pages of records that it insists show the bridge is safe. the agency has determined that the worker did falsify data on three construction projects, but not the bay bridge. caltrans fired him and wants criminal charges filed. he has not responded to the allegations. the man accused of shooting at a south san francisco in 1968 faced a judge this morning. 67-year-old ronald bridgeforth pleaded no contest.

the fugitive from justice turned himself in two weeks ago after more than 40 years on the run. he skipped bail in 1969 after pleading guilty on charge coming from that shootout. sentencing is scheduled for february 3rd. he faces up to 15 years in prison. still ahead, potential -- potentially deadly virus hits -- since a bipartisan group could not agree, drastic cuts are coming. we have reaction from both parties. two american students arrested in cairo.

republicans and democrats are pointing fingers at each other over the failure of the bipartisan super committee to agree on the nation's debt crisis their lack of action triggers deep cuts to the pentagon budget as well as critical domestic programs. katie marzullo joins us from the newsroom. they are all maneuvering for political advantage and taxpayers cut in the -- caught in the middle. >> reporter: it seems they can agree on one thing that the super committee never stood a chance. it was ed from the beginning because of the busher -- it was doomed from the beginning because of the bush era tax cuts. they are challenged with figuring out how to cut 1.2 trillion from the budget. because they failed that same

amount will be cut starting in 2013. medicare and defense spending are first in line to lose funding. democrats and president obama who you see there traveling in new hampshire today, placed the blame squarely on republicans for not agreeing to let the bush tax cuts expire for the richest americans. republicans say, the dim s are to -- >> all you need to do if you want to understand to see what happened at the super committee. we wanted big, bold and balance the american people want a balance approach. they want cuts, revenue, increases they want jobs. >> what the congress believes and what the american believe, which is we have yet to -- [ inaudible ] make a fundamental decision on whether to address the problems that we face.

we ought to be seeing big increases in taxes or restraint in spending. >> reporter: president obama has vowed to veto any bill that an tells to repeal the trigger cuts starting in 2013. he says if congress wants to avoid the cuts they need to work fast to find a plan both sides can support. katie marzullo, abc7 news. in egypt, politicians say the ruling military has moved up the date for transfering mower to a civilian government to july next year. -- power to a civilian government to july next year itch the announce was immediately rejected by -- by tens of thousands of protesters. 29 people have died in this fourth straight day of clashes. protesters want the military to speed up a chance for power to civilian government. the military was considering late next year or early 2013 as the timetable for transfering power. police arrested three

american college students during protests in cairo. officials say the three were throwing fire bombs at security forces clashing with poe tessers in tahrir square. they -- they say the boys have been questioned by police and will be further investigated. marin county health officials has quarantined the county's largest nursing home due to an outbreak of norovirus. managers have called family and friends of residents telling them not to visit. nursing home residents are being ordered to stay in their rooms. health officials say since the outbreak two weeks ago, 80 residents and staff have become ill. two residents were hospitalized but have recovered. >> mike is ahead with the forecast. >> looking outside, clouds but these aren't the clouds we are concerned with that will bring the weather that is out over the ocean. also, everything gaga from the shoes, clothes to candy a

sunshine the rest of the weekend temperatures in the 60s. san francisco supervisors set to vote on whether to expand the city's ban on plastic and paper bags making illegal for all retail stores to use plastic bags starting next july all restaurants in 2013. it imposes a 10 cent fee for paper or combustible bags to reduce the litter problem. >> i come into the store and want to get my things and go and i want bags that are most comfortable and conducive to me getting the groceries out of the store not bags that are breaking on me or -- i prefer the plastic. >> small business leaders see the advantage but charging more isn't as popular there. are questions about the legality. a state court struck down the ban in manhattan beach.
