and i'm cheryl jennings. dr. king's dream for people to be a drum major for service and love carried out by hundreds around the bay area. amy hollyfield joins us from lake merritt with more on some of the projects. >> reporter: check out the intense weeding going on behind me at the lake merritt gardens. . sheryl has always wanted a garden and fruit trees. the old house she inherited from her grandmother needs a paint job and repair work. she is busy raising her 11-year-old grandson. today volunteers are helping her. >> it is support. this is just what it is, support, a helping hand. >> reporter: the lion's club is helping six in richmond do homework. one elderly lady needs a wheelchair ramp. others need old furniture hauled away. odd jobs to contribute to the

national call for a day of service on martin luther king day. she thinks the civil rights leader would be proud. >> his heart would leap. it would be like this is the dream. >> reporter: the day of service idea calls on people to think of this as a day on not a day off. the lion's club is noticing the idea is catching on. >> last year rebuilding together probably had 25 volunteers working on a project like this. today we'll have about 150. >> reporter: they are seeing the same uptick in oakland. 450 volunteers today up from 300 last year. she helped drive the numbers up, she is volunteering today for the first time. >> i just wanted to give back to the community. bring out my two kids, of course. >> reporter: the help is essential around lake merritt, because of budget cuts there are only two fulltime gardners to take care of 83 acres. >> not about how old over young you are or who you are

a day long search operation has failed to turn up any sign of a minnesota couple missing off a cruise ship. they are among the 16 who haven't been seen since the carnival cruise line ship ran aground and capsized off tuscany. six others have died.
