closed captioning by closed captioning services,inc good morning i'm cheryl jennings. and i'm kristen sze. police have roped off a sidewalk to protect people from falling bricks after a building started to lapse. the brick facade came crashing down at the express liquor store on international boulevard. cause cause joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: a two-man crew has been the scene for a while picking up brick by brick looks like they are wrapping up those efforts. inspectors are on scene and they've red-tagged the market not the entire building but the market that means it is unsafe to occupy. around 6:15 this morning

firefighters got a call there had been an explosion. it was not an explosion, but you can see why someone might have thought that. even the owner with was confused by what he saw when he showed up. luckily the fire department is across the street. >> we assessed the building, there's no evidence of explosion. it appears the facade has fell off. >> reporter: that's somewhat good news residents didn't have to be evacuated. it was still a dangerous situation. >> nobody to get hurt. >> reporter: the threat is not over. a city building inspector had fire department block off more of the sidewalk for fear more of the facade will fall. neighbors are happy to keep their distance. >> i'm still worried about it, i see that came down i wonder how much more might still. >> reporter: was next is up to the building owner. he's going to need to find a

way to shore up that facade. the what sidewalk is going to have to stay roped off to the public. that owner will need to hire an engineer and move forward with permanent repairs. katie marzullo, abc7 news. occupy oakland protesters voluntarily appeared in a courtroom today to support other activists facing charges from a demonstration last month. amy hollyfield joins us outside court with more. >> reporter: good morning. there were 11 occupy oakland protesters in court today they had a lot of support. we saw about 50 activists and they had a peaceful presence in court. they watched quietly as their fellow occupiers appeared. the defendants were charged with maliciously blocking a sidewalk and they did not enter pleas they told us they want to file a motion to dismiss the charges. the attorneys say they believe the charges are bonus. those who were in court told us it was comforting to have the other activists here.

>> occupiers are great we turn out and support our friends. there are a bunch supportedding us arrested unjustly this was a -- peaceful group. >> that is inappropriate to convert this charge to charge people for blogging the sidewalk for ultimately just participating in a social movement that is addressing some of the most desperate problems that we have as a country today. >> reporter: the night these people were arrested was a quiet night in the occupy movement. it was january 4th. these protesters say there were about 30 people sitting around in frank ogawa plaza when the police told them they needed to leave. city officials have said you can't gather in the plaza after 10:00 at night. one of the defendants told us he was realized at 11. there was a teepee up that night and police have said it is not loud to be -- not allowed to be there. this is just the beginning of

a day of action today. at noon all these protesters plan to go to frank ogawa plaza, a rally, speakers getting people fired up and motivated. then theyl march back here to support one more person who has a court appearance this afternoon. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. it has been a busy 24 hours for oakland police a series of shootings have left one person dead and injured nine. police have detained one person in connection with the most recent shooting on 83rd avenue shortly after 1:00 this morning. the victim suffered a again shot wound and was taken to a hospital where he died. there were five separate shootings yesterday. police say five victims came from one shooting scene at ade line street 4 p.m.. three were found at a home, two sent to highland hospital. all victims suffered nonlife-threatening injuries.

the police chief call the weekend violence exceptionally troubling and out of hand. he planned to make a statement this afternoon but decided to postpone that statement until later this week so he can concentrate on the occupy activities today. parents staged a protest today outside the los angeles elementary school rocked by allegation of lewd conduct charges against to teachers. the protests comes ahead of tonight's scheduled meeting between parents and the los angeles unified superintendent. today the district announced the school will be closed tomorrow and wednesday. officials say it is related to the investigation but not sure what will be happening. last week teacher mark berndt was charged with committing lewd acts on 23 children from 6 to 10. between 2005 and . four days later another teacher martin springer was arrested on suspicion of fondling two girls in his classroom. >> this morning st. ignatius high in san francisco reopened for the first time since the

norovirus out brach sickened more than 300 students and 30 teachers. wednesday school officials and health department shut the school down after students began reporting stomach flu. crews scrubbed the school with bleach. norovirus is highly contagious and can be passed by casual contact. fire investigators will spend the day trying to find a cause for a fire that gutted a warehouse on mare island the fire started yesterday morning on the northside of the island. plums of spoke could be seen for miles. crews stayed all night watching for flare-ups and say the fire could smolder for days. firefighters pulled back and let the fire burn out after making sure that nobody was inside. officials say the building may have been a haven for the homeless. the state department of water resources says the unintentional release of water from a major pipeline is to blame for flooding a frommont neighborhood this weekend.
