closed captioning by closed captioning services,inc good morning i'm kristen sze. and i'm cheryl jennings. right now a huge crowd of angry nursing home employees and families of low income patients are challenging the board of have advisers. the board may vote to close a long term care center for budget and safety reasons. >> reporter: this is indeed a very emotional hearing. there's an overflow crowd of about 150 here in the ballroom of the westin hoteln millbrae almost all pleading with county supervisors not to

shutdown the burlingame long term care center which has 230 residents. the county took over the center nine years ago when the state placed the previous owner under receivership because of the poor quality of care. this lease expires in june of next year and the health department which runs it has recommended that the supervisors not renew the lease. they say it is too costly. they are running it at an operating deficit of about nine million dollars a year. and the health department says the center is old and unsafe for the residents and staff. the residts who testified made emotional pleas asking the supervisors not to remove them. >> if burlingame were built today it would not be approved under the current code. >> i could go to a center. i could go to -- i just don't

want to move. thank you. >> reporter: the supervisors are scheduled to vote on this lease at this meeting. but, they could also postpone it. the health department says if this center closes, if the supervisors decide not to renew the lease, they will move the seniors the patients in the centerer to facilities in this county and neighboring counties. -- also affected 200 workers they will all be laid off. the county has promised to remove them to put them to place them into other jobs obviously, they don't have enough jobs to accommodate all of them. a very, very emotional hearing at the westin hotel. it is expected to continue through the afternoon. vic lee, abc7 news. the occupy movement's financial impact on two cities is front and center today as the mayors of oakland and san francisco attend an annual summit on the region's

economic future. terry mcsweeney is live at the oakland convention center. lots of challenges this year. not smooth sailing. >> reporter: they did talk about sailing and we'll get to that. for starters two mayors, two different cities they both say they are linked by more than a bay bridge. they are linked financially and economically and in many more ways. first question out of the hat for mayor quan, what are you going to do about occupy oakland protesters? take a look at what protesters have done to the city of oakland. it is very important, business community wants to know if she can pledge to keep businesses running and keep the port open? it is to her five point plan which includes developing retail and expanding the port. quan says occupy oakland is not just oakland's problem. >> it is the blessing and the curse of being so centrally located. we watch the demonstrators come off of bart many coming

san francisco. a report last week suggested they might cost the city money. he said he's positive tweaks can be made and that is not going to happen. as we were leaving, everyone leaving this morning's breakfast, received a fortune cookie we had two asian mayors. every one says the same thing: oakland and sf are partners in developing bay area prosperity. that was the theme of this morning's breakfast, terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. this morning police are interviewing an antioch man who they say shot and killed a robbery suspect who broke into his house. it happened last night. police say the man was home with his young son he heard the doorbell ring but didn't answer. an armed suspect kicked the front door in and the resident confronted him. the two fought and the resident managed to get the suspect's gun and shoot him several times. the man and his son were not hurt. police say this is the

second time in three months a homer has fought back with deadly results. november 5th, a landlord caught a burglar and shot him dead. he told police he caught the man trying to steal copper wire. police determined the indent was self-does, no charges were filed community stun -- stunned and outraged after a shooting rampage at a vallejo nail salon that injuries five, including a little girl. one man is in custody, police are looking for more suspects. >> reporter: this 2-year-old girl was sitting on her grandmother's lap when she was shot. they were sitting inside the nail salon at 7:00 last night. the salon is boarded up this morning and is closed. a loyal curve tina's nail shop came by the -- a little customer of tina's nail shop came by when she heard five people had been shot. >> she was the sweetest little baby that you would ever see,

having a good time with everybody interacting with everybody, sweet. >> reporter: the shootout started around 7:00 last night. police say a man walked into the salon and shot at a female customer then they say it appears a man inside the salon fired back. >> armed suspects left the store on foot and a running gun battle continued down city streets. >> reporter: policicice recoverd two dozen shell casings, a total of five people were shot, all expected to survive. five businesses now have broken glass and other damage from stray bullets. the dominos pizza store had just put up bulletproof plexiglas because of recent violence. >> we put resistance here yesterday bulletproof to protect the employees. find out there's a shooting going on. >> reporter: it is too much for the owners of roberto's jewelry. today happened to be moving day for the owners.

the new jersey church she began singing as a child. family members say it will be invitation-only. houston was found dead saturday at her beverly hills hotel room. police say the music icon was found underwater and unconscious when she was pulled from a bathtub. bottles of prescription medication were found in her room. authorities would not give details only saying there were not a lot of bottles. it could be several with weeks before toxicology tests are completed to determine a cause of death. 20/20 is planning a two hour special on houston's legacy. it will air friday at 9:00. president obama just wrapped up his first meeting with a man who will be china's next leader obama welcomed in the oval office the president says good relations with china are essential and looking forward to future cooperation when he takes over next year.

warm smiles and handshakes mask sharp policy divisions over syria, iran and economic issues. the president's aide says those issues will be on the table -- the president says there are hopeful signs congress will reach day deal to extend payroll tax cuts for millions of americans set to expire the end of the month. the president says congress needs to pass the extension or risk hurting the economic recovery. he urged the public to keep up pressure on lawmakers until an agreement is finalized and the bill makes it to his desk. >> the president: the typical american family will shell out nearly $1,000 more in taxes this year. you will lose about $40 out of every paycheck if congress does not act. that can't happen, not now. >> the president's comments come a day after house republican leaders offered to extent the payroll tax cut

one sierra ski resort is making it more convenient to get your caffeine fix without taking your skis off. skiers at squaw valley can grab an easy pick me up between runs at a starbucks. starbucks says it is the first of its kind. it sits on the mountain at an elevation of 8,000 feet. i'm sure they sell a lot of the hot variety. it will be open daily through the winter weather permitting. they say a little caffeine can boost athletic performance. perhaps this is just the ticket. meteorologist mike nicco keeping an eye on the weather. we have stuff roll through yesterday that storm we talked

see rain. the head of the us conference of catholic bishops says his group will continue to fight to overturn president's obama's mandate for free birth control coverage. last week the president announced a compromise that will exempt employers with religious affiliations from providing coverage directly to employees. instead workers would get free contraception directly from health insurance companies. an official for the group says questions remain about which institutions are exempt and what happens to those who are self-insured? some bay area dogs where to take the big apple by storm. 15 chihuahuas boarded a flight today from new york city. an issue of supply and demand there's an over abundance of chihuahuas here because of all the media exposure and not enough to meet demands in new york. animal control officials say they've too many dogs of all breeds right now. >> we urge people to come and
