the statues of the holy family. because of that and the fact it happened ash wednesday, police are classifying this as a hate crime. parishioners have been very emotional. they say they appreciate the community is reaching out but recognize they still have a ways to go in the healing process. >> you know it happens. a lot of people out here are questioning why. it gives us hope that maybe a good thing like our priest said yesterday, hopefully a good thing will happen out of this. bring the community probably closer together. >> reporter: a graffiti cleanup crew showed up early this morning, then left said they needed to get the building manager out here first. they still have a ways to go. they are just now starting because the priest decided yesterday to leave it up for a day he wanted to show people what hate looks like. he used this as a teachable

moment. he told his parishioners you have to love your neighbor even when you don't want to. today they will scrub it off. some church members told us they are ready to see it gone. as far as the investigation goes, police tell me a few tips are coming in. they say some evidence appeared to be left behind by the vandals so they will be analyzing that. at this point, they don't have any suspects. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. it was a violent night early morning in oakland foucupç incidents left three wounded one in grave condition. police say a man on a bike shot another man riding a bike near the intersection of how long and market streets 8 15 -- of lowell and market seats 8 15. a victim in -- grave condition found at 5:00 in oakland in a car that crashed. it is not clear whether the

man was shot at the location or somewhere else and managed to drive away. last night on international boulevard somebody in a crowd of people at a taco stand fired at a passing car. nobody was hit. in east oakland another man shot on davis street he is in critical condition. a sunnyvale family of four reported missing after an early morning fire was out of the country on vacation. firefighters say this house was engulfed in flames when they arrived 1:00 this morning. crews were concerned that the family did not escape because their cars were still in the driveway. investigators tracked down the family, they in china on vacation. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. fugitive watch. bay area based non-profit aimed at helping solve crimes is celebrating its 20th anniversary today. them two decades, attempted

soldiers were killed during a violent protest. afghan police have killed five protesters during a third day of rioting throughout the country. the two u.s. soldiers killed were part of a nato force in eastern afghanistan. killed by a man dressed in an afghan army uniform. this erupted monday when afghan workers saw u.s. soldiers dumping religious books in a garbage pile. president obama said the error was inadvertent i assure you we will take appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence and hold those responsible accountable. several marines killed during a training mission in arizona. the helicopters were conducting routine training exercises last night when they collided in midair, killing all onboard. six of the marines was from camp pendleton, one from arizona. the cause of the crash is being investigated.

set to talk about the nation's rising gas prices. he landed in miami over an hour ago he's speaking at the university of miami where some students are training as energy efficiency experts. the president is expected to take credit for policies that have increased oil and gas production. but he says the federal government can do little to halt the current rise in gas prices. new poll shows president obama is regaining his political footing in california. 51% of registered voters say they are likely to reelect him, compared with 45% in november. for the first time since june majority of voters, 54% say they approve of the job mr. obama is doing. the president also fares well in california against any republican match-up, leading each candidate by at least 20 points. republican candidates are concentrating on michigan today. the gop held its 20th debate in arizona last night where
