11:35 am
four think years this is typical for the hayward fault the question is why did we have two and were they related? yes, the first is called a foreshock, the rest the main shock. they are all earthquakes. if you get a cluster of quakes that are associated in space they are all at the same location in time close to together in time. the biggest one is call the main shock the ones that precede it are called foreshocks, after, are called aftershocks. >> reporter: do they trigger each other? >> basically, yes they would be considered cause effect related because they occur so close together in time and in the same spatial location. >> reporter: just because we had an earthquake and it relieved stress in that area, do not take any comfort. the doctor said that even a magnitude 6 quake tends to relieve no stress in the larger picture. for example, if you look at the last 100 years in the bay
11:36 am
area, 85% of all the stress was relieved by the 1906 quake. the other 15%, everything else, like the quakes this morning, were negligent -- negligible, whatever word, they were negligent and negligible. wayne freedman, abc7 news. they remind us to pack our emergency kits. even though there was no serious damage we did get a few reports of minor damage mostly things falling off shelves. a viewer from penngrove in sonoma county sent this picture. if you have photos or video we would like to see it upload them to ureport.abc7news.com. also to find out how you can be prepared for the next quake and to track all the quakes in our area check out the quake
