>> announcer: right now breaking news. sky 7 was overhead as a high speed chase leads officers from sacramento sunol reaching speeds up to 100 miles an hour. it came to answer on 680 with police stopping the suv and arresting the female driver. good morning i'm eric thomas. i'm kristen sze. sky 7 hd followed the chase nearly an hour. at least two occasions she almost wiped out as she dodged traffic. the chase finally came to an end more than 100 miles later on highway 680 north of mission boulevard, two miles after the driver hit a spike strip. she slowly came to a stop after a brief standoff pulled out of her car by officers and

taken into custody. the chase began in sacramento when a chp officer tried to pull over the driver for speeding. her name is jennifer zinn. she is either 44 or 45-years-old. at this time still no word why she ran from officers. right now oakland police are surrounding a cvs farmly in the rock ridge mall. a masked man reportedly holed up inside police don't know if he's armed they know two employees inside weren't taking any chances. terry mcsweeney is at the scene. >> reporter: we were just getting the latest information from the police department. the s.w.a.t. team has gone into the pharmacy here. they've gone through the store looking for someone mo might have been armed, -- might have been a robber last seen wearing a ski mask in the store before the store opened to the public. they have not found him. they look at video see hill

exiting the store before the police got here. take a look at the activity out here in this parking lot. there were at least 12, 15 squad cars s.w.a.t. team was out here they had just gone in and determined nobody is in that store. they were looking at this as a possible armed robbery while there was no robbery committed that anybody knew they thought possibly this person with the ski mask on might have been plotting one no one saw a again. it begins with the store manager. the two employees inside the store were approached by a person who should not had been in the store, asking for this man,e store manager. and here'the story. >> one of the associates was approached by a man donning a mask was asking questions. the associate played naive, the man moved on. the associate had an opportunity to get out with the other associate the only

two in there. we are not sure if he's in the building or not. >> reporter: he had a gun? >> never saw a gun. >> we have to assume the worst. we have to assume this individual was there maybe to do some type of criminal activity. we are going to treat it with the utmost caution. >> reporter: -- >> we are not hearing from terry now. you heard the storing manager say the masked man came inside, two employees got out. the s.w.a.t. team has gone through they've found no sign of the masked man inside. police are still holding their positions. we'll bring you more later on. we are also developing developing -- following developing news from the trial of sheriff ross mirkarimi. a panel of three judges has ruled a jury should be allowed to see a key piece of evidence. they announced their decision

a short time ago. the jury will see a videotaped recording showing bruises on the arm of mirkarimi's wife shot by a neighbor. a trial judge previously approved the pictures but attorneys for mirkarimi and lopez appealed. they said lopez thought the neighbor was an attorney. and any video or conversation would be protected under the attorney-client privilege. president obama is urging america to keep its economic engine churning in light of two new jobs reports relaced this morning in january the state's unemployment rate fell below 11% for the first time in nearly three years. the fifth straight drop. the national numbers are a mixed bag february 8.3%. employers added 227,000 jobs. katie marzullo is live in the newsroom tyke a close hraoerbg at these numbers. >> reporter: many -- many economists and president obama consider the february jobs report to be good news. there's the nagging we have how do unemployed americans

those who say it is a flawed estimate. >> you have a lot of folks in america who aren't looking for jobs any more they don't show up on these things. the real rate somewhere in the nines. >> reporter: the spike in gas prices helping republican candidates take air of the president's tires when it comes to the economy. newt gingrich rallied supporters today with this. >> i don't care how much money barack obama raises for his campaign if every american drives up to a gas station and see obama price of gas it going to erase his advertising. >> reporter: the jobless rate over 8%. 5.3 million fewer jobs now than when the recession started. firefighters in berkeley are still trying to answer a key question, did the smoke alarms work in an apartment house gutted by a huge afire? the building was heavily damaged. authorities are worried about

its stability. laura and the live near the scene. we've been -- laura anthony is live near the scene. we've been hearing conflicting reports about the smoke alarms. >> reporter: that's right. the back of the building, the part that was heavy damaged deficient has begun. some of the tenants say they didn't hear alarms as the fire was consuming the building. nine residents in all made it out of six units safely during the two alarm fire that gutted the structure. there were 40 more evacuated in the surrounding apartment buildings. the fire took more than four hours to put out because the firefighters had to evacuate due to concerns about collapse. as for the smoke alarms a fire official here during the fire. were they working or not? >> during the firefighter i personally heard smoke alarms soundinging from the building. we did receive reports from --

from three individuals who indicated they did not hear any alarms. we are not able to confirm the absence or presence of smoke alarms in each of the -- [ inaudible ] the building has been damaged and we are not able to get in to retrieve any smoke alarms. >> reporter: now, this building and within next to it are owned by notorious and wealthy landlord reddy. he declined to speak with us. in 2001 reddy did plead guilty in federal court to charges of immigration fraud, tax fraud and two counts of transporting minors into the country for illegal sex in terms of the handling of his handling of this dent berkeley fire officials stress has been -- this -- he has been very cooperative. so the folks around here can

>> the east bay is looking forward to new jobs and new revenue source with the opening of a luxury retailer. neiman marcus opened in walnut creek the first for the chain in the east bay. amy hollyfield is there live. this comes after a huge battle. >> reporter: yeah, opening up here in walnut creek has not been easy. neiman marcus hasn't opened a new store in two years. the company is very selective about expanding. it locked in on walnut creek, it chose this city for a reason and has worked apparently and hard to reach this point. there was no sign of bad feelings as neiman marcus

opened this morning. you wouldn't know there was a big struggle to reach this point. a section of people who fought to keep this from happening. the mayor says, the city has moved on. >> i think the negativity is gone. i think the people that were very negative have accepted that it is here. >> reporter: those who opposed it were concerned about parking, congestion and go the issue to the ballot. a rival mall company supported the campaign in the hopes of getting neiman into a mall in san ramon. voters overwhelmingly said yes. >> i'm excited to get in and see the shoes and handbags. >> reporter: not just shoppers felt like celebrating. the store means 200 new jobs for the area. crystal has been unemployed since getting laid off a year ago. >> very difficult to find a job. a lot of places weren't hiring because there were so many people looking. >> reporter: she screamed when she landed a job at knee

hands. she is hoping it is a good sign the economy is coming back. the mayor hopes so too. >> we have a retail store vacancy rate in the downtown of under 3%, which is really good. that's just an indicator that walnut creek is doing well. >> reporter: the shoe department looks like it is doing well. for the last hour we've been watching sales associates come out over and over again with arm loads full of shoe boxes for customers. the hope is that this will bring in a lot of tax revenue for the city. the store won't talk about projections. city officials hope to get anywhere from $400 to 600,000 a year of tax revenue from neiman marcus. it won't be the last call for san francisco's landmark gold difficulty lunge this weekend. the attorney for the bar says the -- doors will not be padlocked as threatened by the landlord.

for the first time in years no one can remember exactly home a pair of bald eagles are preparing to nest. birders have been tracking the pair in watsonville several spotted them building a large nest. yesterday the eagles were seen soaring above the lake. bald eagles all but disappeared from california in the 60s due to the effects of the pesticide ddt. >> they are making a comeback. sunshine and warmth making a comeback but it won't be long. >> today is about it includes rain, cooler conditions coming. for any of those coats on clearance at neiman marcus, get 'em now.
