closed captioning by closed captioning services,inc the rain brings slick roads to the bay area this morning causing numerous accidents. east bay was the scene to a few crashes. get ready for more scenes like these as several storms line up to hit the bay area this week. rain here means much needed snow in the sierra, heavenly and south tahoe and other resorts are thrilled. drivers heading up there need to be very careful and carry chains. good morning i'm eric thomas in for cheryl jennings. and i'm kristen sze. we have live team storm coverage. amy hollyfield is in san francisco, katie marzullo is in marin county. >> let's begin with mike.

let's take a look right here behind me. good morning. continuing coverage here you can see the live doppler radar sweep on mount st. helena and the other are picking the best radar returns in the higher elevations and through the north bay where it has been for the better part of the morning hours. half an of petaluma, napa, more that an inch in santa rosa, now the cold front is starting to stall. that means we are going to have a moist southerly flow throughout the day into tonight with the heaviest rain ahead of us winds gusting 25 to 35 miles per hour through the early evening. complete forecast in just a minute. amy hollyfield is live in downtown san francisco preparations being made? >> reporter: people are getting ready, they are taking this storm seriously. we aren't getting any breaks.

we are expected to have steady rain for several rains. it -- for several days. it is all about being prepared. a dozen people picked up sandbags this morning in san francisco to try and keep the water out of their homes. >> right now it is fine. if the rain continues, on a daily basis, grounds get saturated and the rear of the house starts to flood. it is not bad, but any water in the house is not good. >> reporter: the rain started this morning. it wasn't heavy but it was still enough to cause problems on the highways. >> 25% increase in 911 calls from this morning's commute between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m.. i don't think this weather was bad i think the worst is coming. people need to remember to slow down, slow down, slow down. >> reporter: the chp has another tip. if you are involved in a collision do everything you can to move to city streets. >> get off the freeway not

just on to the shoulder because you can be on the shoulder which is hazardous and a car spins out and you get hit. get off the freeway and exchange information there. >> reporter: it was rough this morning, the chp is aware it is supposed to be worse tonight that is why they are working hard to get that message out to slow down. they are beefing up patrols for the commute. they are expecting it to be problematic on the roads tonight. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. katie marzullo has seen a lot of umbrellas live in downtown marin county. >> reporter: the rain is always the sensitive subject here we know when the creek floods it does have disastrous results for downtown. take a look at the creek nothing major now i've been keeping on the creek gauge and it looks like it has risen in the last 12 hours from little

transportation. >> i'm if the going to tell you at 6:00 when i'm coming home and i'm really wet and my umbrella turns out five times probably going to be swearing to god about >> reporter: being soaking wet may be the worst of it for now public works has crews checking on hot spots, nothing to report. they are looking ahead to overnight into tomorrow is when they expect to see the worst of it. they've set up several locations that you can get sandbags if you want to do protection around your home or business most at local pump stations and fire departments. they don't have it listed on their website you have to call for more guidance. if you go to your nearest pump station or fire department you should find what you need there. katie marzullo, abc7 news. you might have guessed if you are flying today call ahead. weather is causing big delays at san francisco international airport.

this morning. they were among 39 arrested during an occupy demonstration november 9th, 2011. the video shows police jabbing at some of the protesters with batons as they removed occupy tents. the five facing charges range in age from 21 to 54. breaking news out of uc berkeley. chancellor is stepping down. he will leave office at the end of the year after eight years leading one of the nation's premiere public universities the physicist intends to remain to teach and do research. key events under his watch, state budget cuts, student protests, balanced by achievements like continued high academic rankings. investigators still don't know what caused this morning's fire in three carports of an apartment building in oakland. a resident of the adams street complex captured this cell phone video of the flames after 4:00 this morning.

anger growing in afghanistan obvious last weekend's shooting deaths of 16 civilians by a u.s. soldier. afghans burned an effigy of president obama and a cross today while students shouted death to the soldier who killed our people. taliban fighters opened fire today on president karzai's two brothers who visited the

village where the shooting took place. president obama has directed the pentagon to spare no effort in conducting a full investigation. >> the president: the united states takes this as seriously as if it was our own citizens and our own children who were murdered. we're heart broken over the loss of innocent life. >> u.s. officials say the shooter is a married 38-year-old father of two. the trained sniper had three deployments to iraq before this deployment to afghanistan. he's accused of putting on his night vision goggles and methodically going door-to-door shooting citizens, including nine children, as they slept. president obama is putting china and america's other economic competitors on notice they won't get away with skirting the rules of international trade. he made the statement this morning in the rose garden. he says the u.s. is bringing a new case against china because of export restrictions on key materials used to manufacture high-tech goods. the u.s. is taking the case to

cancelled because of the rain and snow. good morning again. 11:19 snow falling in the sierra they are going to get more snow pack now around 30% of average. we could use as much as they can give us without the avalanches that could be a concern towards the weekend. from emeryville, can't see san francisco because of the low clouds, a lot of moisture in the air. live doppler you can see the best radar returns across the north bay that's the way this system is going to be because of the front stalling to the north and also because we have this southerly wind and the natural topography of the north bay lifts it and creates more rain than any other area except for the santa cruz mountains you are going to have a lot of rain too. san francisco up towards rodeo, concord, san ramon, a quarter to a third of an inch, mill valley about half an inch south san francisco and hayward around 2/10 to a 10th

tahoe getting snow, palm springs tate the temper with a lot of -- 80, the temperature with a lot of sunshine. right now you can see the front we talked about this yesterday it was going to stall and it is starting to do that now. as long as it stalls we are in that southerly wind with that moisture that being the lifting mechanism and our topography don't see how we are going to get out of this front. the front will ooze towards us by 5:00 steadiest north bay overnight with front stalling on top of us heavier rain moves in the entire bay through tomorrow's morning commute by noon we start to see it slide a little south in a slight tapering during the afternoon. during the evening and overnight it becomes light drizzle before the next system moves into the north bay 7:00 thursday morning most of the scattered showers hang out there thursday.

thursday night the next system gives us all rain. one to two inches around the bay three to possibly five inches in the north bay and santa cruz mountains. that storm will move out friday evening and then that next system moves in saturday and sunday when we could have snow levels down to 2,000 feet thunderstorms with hail and a lot of snow in the sierra. >> don't have to look so hope -- so happy about it mr. meteorologist. >> just happy it is finally here. new warning about drinking water contamination in parts of california. researchers are finding nitrate in water in california's agricultural heartland the central valley and salinas vally chemical fertilizers and manure are contaminating under treated ground water over one million people rely on that water. high levels of nitrates have been linked to cancer. marketing that pays
