closed captioning by closed captioning services,inc the mother of a missing teen from morgan hill passes out fliers hoping someone has seen her daughter. 15-year-old sierra lamar disappeared5áfriday. investigators are canvassing schools in to counties. we have new information on sierra's father a registered sex offender. good morning i'm kristen sze. and i'm cheryl jennings. terry mcsweeney is live where sierra went to school last year. >> reporter: as you can see by that sign behind me her former classmates here at washington high in fremont have not forgotten sierra lamar. as we are finding out that the 15-year-old's father is a

convicted child molester, her mother is not waiting for the public to come forward, she reaching out to the public. arlene lamar talks through tears to drivers coming through the intersection where she believes her daughter was last seen. she hands out fliers and fishes for information, perhaps finding a negative information that might help find her daughter. >> it seems odd. >> police report it to the police department that as the biggest thing i've heard so far. >> reporter: 15-year-old sierra has not been seen since friday morning when she left her house for the school bus stop. she never boarded the bus. >> they might have seen something out of the other. i was telling them to remember what happened driving march 16th, friday. >> reporter: sierra's cell phone was found 3/4 mile from her home it appears it may have been thrown from the -- from a vehicle in the opposite direction of her school.

now we are getting word her father was convicted in 2007 of lewd or lascivious acts with a girl under 14. he spent eight months in jail. before reporters learned of his record he spoke with abc7 news about his last conversation with sierra. >> thursday night she sounded really good. she was excited about a paper she was writing and she wa telling me about that, me and her other sister. >> reporter: mr. lamar says he only pleaded guilty to child molestation at the advice of an attorney. he says he's innocent but still officially a sex offender. the address listed for lamar is a motel 6 we are told by sources he hasn't lived for the past six months. we asked mrs. lamar about her ex-husband's criminal record. >> i don't want to talk about that. that has nothing to do with my daughter now. we are searching for her and that's the focus now. >> reporter: thanks very much. despite the information about

sierra's father we are told by investigators that steve lamar is not a person of interest in this case. not a person of interest. and has been cooperating fully with investigators. investigators also say they are going to be the high schools talking students seeing if they can find a lead. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. san francisco mayor lee says he will make a decision today on whether to file ethics charges against san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi now that he has been sentenced in connection with the domestic violence case. there are several other developments, including the fact that mirkarimi has not shown up for work yet. amy hollyfield joins us now. there's a skating letter in the -- scathing letter in the paper today. >> reporter: yes a tough letter face. he's not here in the office dealing with it. i just checked in with his spokesperson ross mirkarimi is off site at a meeting. i said professional or

fate and if he -- ross mirkarimi's fate and if he will make a move towards pushing him out as sheriff. thorough coverage tonight so stay with abc7 news. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. right now long beach trustees of the california state university system are meeting to vote on raising the salaries of two new campus presidents if approved, csu east bay president would receive a salary of more than $303,000. fullerton president would make more than $324,000. 10% more than their current pay and 10% more than the presidents before them. this comes a day after drastic move by the university system to close spring admissions at most campuses next year. a few hundred students will be let into eight campuses, including cal-state east bay, san francisco and sonoma those areomnity college transfs.er

officials say deep cuts are planned if voters reject governor's measure to raise taxes in november, they say total enrollment could be reduced 25,000. police investigating vandalism at a cemetery, 40 brass rings worth $50 each were pried off crypts at the sonoma mountain cemetery on first street west there's a history of vandalism at the cemetery usually following illegal partying. police believe the thieves are after the money she can get from selling the metal. stay away orders issued against four occupy cal protesters involved in the november 9th, demonstrations at uc berkeley. protesters set up tents that lead to a violent confrontation with police. yesterday a judge ordered the four to stay at least 100 yards away from uc berkeley property exceptions were made for attending class or on campus jobs. new toll opened in

lawyer for robert bales says his client remembers little about the fight he's accused of killing 16 civilians in afghanistan. the attorney met with bales for the first time yesterday. he says bales has a sketchy memory of events before and after the killings recalls little or nothing of the time the military says he wept on the shooting spree through two afghan villages, killing women and children. he's being held charges could come this week. the u.s. war in afghanistan was a big topic among lawmakers this morning. in light of the bales' shootings and recent burnings of the muslim holy book katie marzullo joins us with more on the heated hearing.

>> reporter: an army staff sergeant stands accused of mass murder in afghanistan. last month u.s. soldiers accidentally burned copies of the qur'an sparking deadly riots. lawmakers and military leaders acknowledge the incidents have spurred anti-u.s. sentiment as they prepare for the draw down. >> each of these vents is heartwrenching my thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by this violence. >> reporter: still he says the u.s. remains on track. >> we are well aware and well along on the progress to meet our 2010 lisbon commitments to transition security lead to the afghan national security forces by december 2014. >> reporter: the acting under secretary of defense testified he says significant progress has been made. >> from 2010 to 2011 enemy initiative attacks in afghanistan were down 9%. this trend has continued into 2012. for january and february this year initiated attacks are

down further 22%. >> reporter: dr. miller told the committee in october of 2008 there were 140,000 afghans in the afghan national security forces today 330,000. the goal of 352,000 is expected to be met ahead of the october 2012 target date. some committee members are skeptical in part because of the upcoming election and possible change of the commandinger in chief. >> will you be -- commander in chief. >> will you be honest and say to the next administration you need to stay to the timetable because we have done all we can do, you are not going to change history? >> i'll be honest with you now and i'll be honest with that next administration. it is my obligation, my moral obligation to ensure that this force is resourced and this force is committed into a strategy that i think will work. >> reporter: the jen told the committee the u.s. has no intention of staying in afghanistan forever.
