mix around mound hamilton, san jose, campbell, showers on the peninsula and just offshore here more showers will continue to rotate in throughout the day. we are looking at a little sun. once we see that sunshine that works to further create an unstable atmosphere because we have the core of this system, area of low pressure that still needs to go over the area. it is snowing heavily now in the sierra nevada. last night we picked up significant rain totals. snow totals, coming. sergio is live in piedmont. >> reporter: here in piedmont in the last hour or so or moraga avenue crews were able to cut apart a tree that came to rest across the street. you can see there's a lot of dirt and what looks like the roots of the tree that's where it came down the side of the hill. one of the problems that crews

are trying to assess is a lot of earth that came didn't the hill might have loosened up some of the foundations on the homes up above. they are going to assess a lot of the trouble this landslide has caused here in piedmont. police say it happened around 7:00 this morning. it gave way because the ground is over saturated because of the heavy rains. traffic is being turned around because the street is blocked off by debris and the tree. according to neighbors, when the tree came down it caused a spectacular flash of light. >> i was sitting at window doing meditation. suddenly, i saw the sun a huge glow of white light. then i looked around and i saw the tree was just coming down. >> reporter: throughout the bay area drivers had to contend with slick roads and street flooding. in castro valley, another mudslide on crow canyon pushed

traffic to one lane. a driver went into a ditch but no injuries. alameda county public works crews are being dispatched to bulldoze that mess in berkeley, a tree came down on prince street no one was injured there ain't missed powerlines and another -- there and it missed powerlines and any nearby cars. throughout the bay area, pg&e crews have been scrambling to repair lines thousands of people have had power knocked out through the night and they've been working quickly to restore that power here on moraga avenue when this tree went down it knocked out power for 64 customers. these crews now are working to restore that power. live in piedmont, i'm sergio quintana, abc7 news. did you see the lightning? the storm generated hundreds of strikes, it only took one to force a huge jet to turn around and make an emergency

landing. katie marzullo with more. >> reporter: the national weather service is reporting 750 strikes on and on offshore in the bay area between last night and early this morning. yes, one did hit a plane in flight. as we speak, those london-bound passengers are making their way back to sfo for take ii. we tacked with one of them. 30 minutes into an 11 hour flight the weather wrecked everyone's plans. >> i thought it was an engine burning out or catching on fire. in fact it was a bolt of lightning. >> reporter: passenger michael o'neil was sitting toward the front of the plane. >> i heard screaming and i looked back and i saw some of the oxygen masks had came down from the ceiling. i think those people were more shooken up in the back of the plane. >> reporter: not to say o'neil was not affected. >> it was quite scary hearing the jolt of the plane and you

could feel the lightning hit the plane and just a giant flash. >> reporter: united flight 930 bound for london started circling and dumping fuel. the crew told passengers the plane was fine, but to be safe they would be landing back at sfo. this afternoon they will be back where they started to attempt the trip again. >> i'm a little wary but i have to get on this plane for this business trip. knock on wood, everything is okay. >> reporter: the new flight 1757 is scheduled to leave at 3:00 this afternoon. in south san francisco crews are working to clear a lot of standing water from a connector ramp on the peninsula. 101 connector ramp shutdown to westbound 380 it should take crews another half hour. in contra costa county moraga police are urging drivers to avoid canyon road after the rain caused flooding and trying gored -- and

triggered a rock slide. >> as we cleanup from the rain, the sierra is seeing new snow. heavenly camera shows plenty of fresh power. all this snow good news for resorts but it could take patience getting there chain or snow tires required on i-80 and highway 50, the same for highway 89 in squaw valley. in oakland this morning this is glen manor place where sky 7 shows a massive tree uprooted by the wind and rain. >> similar in the santa cruz mountains public works crews dealing with a massive oak tree that fell a mile and a half off highway 17. david louie took this picture. the tree snagged cable and phone lines, thankfully, no powerlines. if you have video or photos we would love to see them. you can upload them to ureport or e-mail them.

we are also continuing to follow developing news from modesto. the man suspected of killing a sheriff's deputy and another after a fire ripped through his fire. the deputy is 53-year-old robert paris, a 16 year veteran. >> reporter: the last time we spoke, since the last time we've spoke they've moved us back 100 feet, because they are not sure if there might be explosives inside that four-plex we've been talking about throughout the morning. they had information that would lead them to believe there may be. they moved us back for our own safety. at this point they are in the process of going through that property this is a process that is going to take hours as they have to be careful there's a lot of structural damage. let's go to video we shot last night as this fire broke out. the fire was prompted when the s.w.a.t. team moved in,

sheriff believes when they started firing tear gas and flash bang grenades it may have connected with some sort of flammable device in that four-plex that the suspect was holed up in nearly 12 hours causing it to catch fire. that fire was put around 2:00 in the morning, it is still smoldering at this hour. video from earlier when this whole thing started. 11 a.m. yesterday stanislaus county deputy robert paris and a civilian were serving an eviction notice at that moment home on chrysler drive suspect fired shots, killing them both. then he went inside the home. during that process deputies tell us they were not able to make verb contact they were pretty sure he was inside that home. -- what we are waiting on now is the report back from the detectives and the fire department as far as what they find inside this house. obviously, if they don't find the suspect's remains, they don't think this was a

elevations. with the cold air and upper level continuing to get closer to the bay area and sinking south to the east this is what we are getting generating showers here. i don't think the dynamics are as strong as they yesterday. we have most of the elements in place where we could see storm south lake tahoe snow there half inch of rain in the past 24 hours napa, inch and 3/4 in oakland some say more came down it was coming down so hard last night with over 3/4 of an inch in san jose. snow tells from two feet at tahoe donner, 19 inches alpine meadows, a foot in truckee, 13 inches at squaw. 49 san rafael, 54 mountain view, highs chilly, gusty winds at the airport. afternoon showers possible thunderstorm today, sunny and mild for the weekend. we are looking at that snow coming down in the mountains with another foot above 6,000
