today but there was fear here that they were going to do more. protesters say uc berkeley police woke them up 6:00 this morning and announced they needed to leave. if they didn't, they would be arrested. if they interfered the chemical agents could be used against them. >> they elaborated on that saying tear gas and peeper spray -- pepper spray and flash grenades. >> reporter: word spread quickly even parents of the children at the school heard about it. one woman told abc7 news she was going to keep her asthmatic child home. >> a couple of calls. couple asked if school was going on, we said yes. >> reporter: the protesters moved off the university of california owned piece of land, nothing happened. police did not move in and did

not make arrests. they did put up concrete barricades so no vehicle get in. officials say they don't want the protest to get bigger. >> we have no way to get water [ unintelligible ] we are trying to negotiate with police and find a solution that works for both of us. >> we will regain control of that property. it is university property. it is an open air laboratory. >> reporter: occupiers say they will continue to farm until the sun goes down or until they are arrested. as for the school children the principal tells me she is in communication with police and police have told her they will let her know if and when they make any decisions. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. lt. governor gavin knewsome spoke out against a plan to raise -- uc by 6% again.

refining gold in the middle of the night at an industrial park in menlo park. deputies cordoned off the area after they smelled chemicals. they discovered the men using chromatic acid to melt gold in the back of a pick-up truck. the area opened a few hours later. volunteers and divers are in action again this morning continuing their search for missing sierra lamar. their efforts are fueled by new optimism after potentially important evidence was recovered. >> reporter: you have to put yourself in the minds of volunteer searchers turning out for the past seven weeks. you can see some down there. very little new information, very little new in the way of inspiration that sierra lamar might be found. now they've found a car tied to her disappearance, we are told it is making a huge

difference. today's search looks like last week's and the search the week before that. but there's a new spirit of optimism that the people can feel. >> it is uplifting and positive. we are hoping that finding the car means to leading finding sierra. >> reporter: a red volkswagon with a black hood considered to have a connection to the disappearance. >> this does make significant difference. this is a physical lead that they have that they feel is pretty strong and it is hopeful. >> reporter: investigators say won't say how the car is tied to the disappearance or where they found it. >> it has been almost seven weeks without any new information. >> reporter: this woman who has only missed a handful of search days is guarded in her optimism. >> it is like a little relief but not really because we don't know what is going on yet.

population will hit 40 million later than they expected. new estimates from the state department of finance show california had 37.7 million people last year. experts expected the state to have 40 million by now but the great recession has caused a slow down in births and immigration the state is expected to hit that milestone 2018. the bay area is home to 7.25 million. it is expected to top eight million in 2030. new report shows california's crackdown on junk food in school cafeterias is paying off. california became the first state a decade ago to ban the sale of soft drinks in schools. since 2007 the state has enforced nutrition standards. eliminating the amount of the fat, sugar and calories in meal plans and snacks from vending machines. students now consume nearly 160 fewer calories per day than students in other states.
