closed captioning by closed captioning services,inc an international coalition of nearly 100 protesting outside the chevron shareholders' meeting today. they claim the company is engaging in risky and dangerous operations overseas. good morning, i'm cheryl jennings. and i'm kristen sze amy hollyfield is live in san ramon. >> reporter: we are just now seeing our first act of civil disobedience. the crowd has just moved into the entranceway of the chevron headquarters blocking access to it. police looks like trying to part the crowd so people can get in and out the shareholder meet something over this group looks like it is just getting started.

she went to ecuador herself to see what the country looked like after a court there ruled chevron damaged the amazon rain forest. her trip motivated her to protest. >> the water that people drink and swim and bath and wash their clothes has oil in it. >> reporter: chevron refuses to apologize for any environmental damage and won't pay the 18 billion dollar fine calling the case a scheme to rip-off chevron. >> we believe the judgment in ecuador is filled with fraud and misconduct. we do not believe that judgment will be upheld in any court country that abides by the reason of law >> reporter: it is not just concerns for ecuador that drew these protesters. head of brazil's largest federation of oil workers traveled here to attend the meeting as an appointed proxy. the chef ron -- the chevron official said he did not have the right paperwork. >> he came to tell the

shareholders their money is not being well invested. >> reporter: chevron is facing fines in brazil and criminal charges against some of its employs -- employees, due to an oil spill. >> we acted we acted in in in accordance with the law. >> reporter: protesters hoping pressure put on the company from ecuador, brazil and nigeria, where two people in january died from a gas explosion, will convince chevron to start acting responsibly. the company insists it already is a good neighbor in the more than 100 tie -- 100 communities where it does business. >> we are helping build communities all around the world. >> reporter: there are several police officers here it looks like they are working to break up the crowd and open up that entrance to the headquarters. we've seen some protesters leaving the area. the worst of this might be over as far as impact from the

protests here on the community. it looks like the protests might be wrapping up. a spokesperson told me inside the meeting was peaceful, no problems. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. menlo park-based facebook off to another rough day on wall street after dropping 24%. facebook stock down another 2% so far today over $28 a share. some are predicting it could drop below $20 before it bottoms out. mitt romney is raising campaign cash today in one of the bay area's wealthiest communities. yesterday he secured enough delegates in the texas primary to capture the gop nomination at the convention. tonight he will headline a fundraiser at the carolyn chateau in hillsborough, two prominent california republicans will be there. former secretary of state george schultz and former governor pete wilson. romney's wife will be at a lunch at the palo alto home of

cisco chairman. president obama called mitt romney a few hours ago to congratulate him on securing the gop nomination. the president told romney he looks forward to an important and healthy debate about america's future. the two campaigns are opening new attacks on each other today. president obama's advisers say when romney was governor of massachusetts, that state's economy lagged in job creation and saw an increase in debt. romney's campaign is bringing attention to failed stimulus projects like solyndra the company received hundreds of millions only to go bankrupt. right now in morgan hill scheduled volunteer search underway for missing 15-year-old sierra lamar. family members have not given up hope they will find her even though police arrested a suspect. lamar disappeared on her way to school march 16th. dive teams have been searching since then. but no body has been found. the suspect antolin garcia-torres will be back in

court tomorrow. he's been charged with murder and kidnapping. authorities say dna evidence links him to the crime. sunnyvale police found no evidence of foul play in the death of johnie kirton an up and coming sabercat football. he scored the winning touchdown in overtime for the sabercats saturday night. the 26-year-old was just traded to the sabercats this month. authorities are looking for the owner after abandoned home that caught fire in oakland this morning. flames shot out of the roof of the home on martin luther king way near 29th street. katie marzullo is there live with incredible video and an incredible escape. >> reporter: right now you can see the home is gutted and blackened, firefighters have left. earlier this morning, it burned hot, long and all inside of what should have been an empty house. it is a wake-up call and nightmare in one. >> i woke this morning to

sirens, lights going off, the smell is bad. so bad it burns your throat. >> reporter: oakland firefighters arrived to dark smoke and bright orange flames shooting from the roof and second floor of an old victorian home. >> everything happened so fast. i jumped up and we walked in next thing five minutes later this happened. >> reporter: the three story house was abandoned which can be bad news for firefighters for two reasons. >> it would have had time to build before anyone noticed. it has been vacant a long time that creates a lot of open spaces so the fire can run. >> reporter: there was a man staying in the basement but he got out safely. the battalion chief does not think he had anything to do with the fire since it didn't start in the basement. >> my guess would be second floor the front. >> reporter: the front of the house now an empty shell neighbors still realing from a frightening morning. >> yes, i'm squared of fire. i'm pet -- i'm scared of fire,

i'm petrified, really scary. >> reporter: the chief tells me they will work with public works to try to find the owner of this abandoned home. crews will continue to do spot-checks on this house to make sure the fire danger is over. at this hour no word on the cause of the fire. katie marzullo, abc7 news. streets in a fremont neighborhood are open after a hazardous material problem shutdown the area for several hours this morning. authorities were responding to a suicide call they found an unknown chemical in a car parked in an apartment garage with a woman's body inside. haz-mat crews were called and it was determined the substance was not dangerous. an update to a story one of the broken elevators up and running at a highrise housing complex for seniors in campbell. 160 residents live in the westlake manor apartments they've been forced to use the

stairs, if they can or stay home since friday. that's when water damage from the fire shutdown the elevators. some had to depend on others to bring them food. >> oh my god i was hungry. this is so wonderful to me, you have no idea. i know i'm still bundled up but it was freezing in there, it -- >> crews are still working to fix the building's second elevator, no word on when that will be working. caltrans says it is planning on contacting outside experts about the safety of the new bay bridge. according to the sacramento bee the agency is making the move to ease concerns over the safety of the bridge's foundation. over the weekend the bee reported the bridge's contractor failed to disclose tests showing a large section of the concrete and foundation is poor or soft. the new bay bridge is set to open in 2013. the uss iowa has reached
