>> announcer: right now abc7 news begins with breaking news. in san jose we have word a south with west flight has just landed safely. reports of smoke as it was coming in. flight 2433 was coming in from las vegas. you are looking at a live picture of firefighters surrounding this plane. the pilot reported on approach there was smoke in the cabin. >> fire trucks on the tarmac ready to go in case something happened. we want to find out exactly what happened. right now on the phone with us a spokeswoman from the san jose international

airport. vicki, thank you for joining us. what can you tell us? >> well, our normal response to this is to have our own station 20 fire truck and meet the plane, which it did. there was a second fire truck called in that arrived. when the plane landed safely it taxied to gate 22, there was still a slight odor of smoke at that point in time, nothing visible. the passengers deplaned and they brought a mechanic onboard and our station 20 is still on alert, standing by while the mechanics is checking out the plane. >> did you have to deploy a slide from the plane? in case passengers had to get out that way? >> no, no it taxied to the gate and they deplaned

normally. >> was this deemed an emergency landing? >> no, not really an emergency landing just what we call an alert so that when a pilot, you know, is experiencing any kind of malfunction, they just alert the tower so we're prepared on the ground when they do land. >> absolutely. vicki thank you very much, nobody hurt, we are happy to report southwest jet number 2433 safely on the ground now. thank you vicki. >> you're welcome. i'm cheryl jennings. and i'm kristen sze. a man is being questioned in a huge overnight fire in san francisco. investigators are trying to determine if anyone may have been left inside and whether it was arson. >> amy hollyfield has been at that scene all morning. >> reporter: i just learned one more person has been taken

into custody, a woman just came back to this home looking for her cat she claimed to have lived here, no one was living here so police took her into custody. it appears there were two, maybe three squatters in this home which you can see is now destroyed. san francisco firefighters saw this fire on boutwell street at 3:00 this morning, they were immediately suspicious. the fire had already reached four homes and one home was burning from top to bottom. >> normally, you wouldn't expect that volume of fire unless it was something out of the ordinary. >> reporter: the 22 people living inside three of the burning hopes barely had time to grab anything. >> fire was shooting out the front of the house. >> reporter: people across the street said it was tough to evacuate. >> there was so heavy, heavy smoke that you couldn't breathe. >> reporter: april thomas is the caregiver for two elderly patients on this street.

she rushed right over when she heard about the fire. >> i'm glad they got out safely. knowing that both of them are ill. >> reporter: police suspect arson and detained a 61-year-old man who witnesses say was running from the scene with a gas can in his hand. investigators have the can as evidence. they also reported smelling gas in the area. >> it had to be squatters, no one else. >> reporter: residents say this home has been empty for years and has been plagued with squatters. many say they've filed several complains with the city. the home also burned three years ago. as residents take inventory of what little they have left, some are feeling frustrated and upset. >> my memories, these memories ridiculous. i just wish that you know the city and county would have did something earlier to prevent this. >> reporter: a spokesman with

the building department tells me investigators posted several notices of code violations on this home and the owner has been unresponsive. he says this was likely headed to litigation with the city attorney's office. we did place a call to police to find out why squatters had been allowed to stay. we are still waiting to hear back. the good news is, no one was hurt. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. take a look at these pictures sent from a resident in the area at the height of the fire these were taken as firefighters arrived at the scene in san francisco getting their equipment out. here's another picture you can see how big the flames got and the firefighters on the ladder spraying water on homes. to see more pictures check out the slide show on abc7news.com. union city police want to find three people who shot and wounded a woman during a home invasion robbery it happened 10:15 last night.

investigators believe robbers confronted a 62-year-old woman outside the home and forced their way inside. within robber fired a again after one of the residents of the home starting -- fired a gun after one of the residents of the home starting fighting with the intruders. jury deliberations underway in the trial of a san francisco man us of beating a priest who he says molested him as an a child. william lynch faces felony charges of assault and elderly abuse. defense attorneys claim lynch did not attack to attack lindner when he confronted the retired priest two years ago. prosecutors call lynch a vigilante. they say he took part in a selfish act of revenge if convicted, lynch could face four years in prison. in oakland protesters are promising to return after police force them to end a 19 day occupation at lakeview elementary. they are upset that school is closing with others. terry mcsweeney was first on

the scene and joins us with more. >> reporter: yes, a sign of the times in front of lakeview elementary. people putting together signs, about half a dozen protesters here more signs and more protesters for the first time since june 15th, no protesters on the campus of the school that could change at this evening's rally 4:00 this morning police moved on to the campus where they told the occupiers it was time to leave or face arrest. >> their voices were heard. they are trespassing. we do have a right to the site and to disperse the demonstrators. we needed to do that now in order to continue with preparations for the 2012-13 school year. >> reporter: most left without incident. a school spokesman says two refused to leave and were realized peacefully. one of the machine we are told -- men we are told is joel

velasquez parent and vocal leader interviewed by abc7 news. one of those who took part in the school occupies described the scene this morning. >> they were surprised, kind of scared. then they gave the word we need to leave or they could use chemical agents. >> reporter: protesters have been occupying the school since june five betweenth this morning -- june 15th. this morning they were sent packing as were some signs. protesters say this fight is not over. >> we are going to fight to improve our schools in oakland. stop attacking teachers. stop closing schools and fight to have the best public education possible for our kids. >> reporter: support for the protesters on the mar keith the theater. -- on the marquee at the theater. 17,000 students have left this district in the past 10 years

delays right now southbound 880 in oakland. sky 7 hd is live over this "sig alert" on the freeway near 8th street. somebody spilled gravel on the freeway blocking two of the four lanes. you can see slowly reopening you can look at the back-up right there the chp tells us it is slow through the macarthur maze as crews continue to clean it up.
