dead. >> it happened in oakland's chinatown. >> sue thompson joins us with more. >> reporter: good morning. that is the latest this morning from oakland police. two men are still at large here in connection with this fatal home invasion. it happened in the heart of oakland's chinatown. right across the street is the building. as homicide team continues to work to process evidence, what they found inside has added a new twist to this investigation. at 4:40 this morning, gunfire in oakland's chinatown. police arrived to this home at the 300 block of 7th street. >> upon arrival they found within individual deceased apparent gunshots. >> reporter: the homeowner is now being questioned. police say he apparently shot and killed one of three suspects that forced their way inside. the homeowner's dog was

killed. a second dog did survive. inside a twist, as police uncover a marijuana growing operation. the question now, whether it is legal? if the homeowner can prove it? >> there would be certain legal documents. just because you have a piece of paper doesn't mean it is legitimate. >> reporter: the lieutenant says if the marijuana operation is legal police can't confiscate anything. one local business owner in chinatown for 10 years can hardly believe it. >> a big surprise for me. a big surprise for this area. >> reporter: a lot of questions on this investigation still remain, including the biggest one, whether the homeowner will face charges in connection with the shooting. oakland police are not commenting on the weapons used in this home invasion or on those suspects that are still

at large. sue thompson, abc7 news. richmond police are looking for a second suspect in the fatal shooting of a high school football player. the 16-year-old was shot last night. katie marzullo is live at the scene. you spoke with the victim's family? >> reporter: i did. that family is in shock this morning we're standing where the shooting occurred about 9:30 last night you can see the memorial set up. he did not live in these apartments he lived in a home with his family across the street. his family cannot figure out what he was doing here or why something like this would happen to him. 16-year-old ulysses was shot and killed at an apartment complex on mcdonald avenue. his cousin placed flowers this morning. >> he loved his family, he lives right there. everyone knew him.

we weren't expecting this. >> reporter: his family shared these photos aspiring professional football player. >> he was going to kennedy high. he was going to get recruited. he wanted to play for the nfl. his coach wanted to help him. he was such a good kid he never hung out here. >> reporter: police are still working on that. they have one in custody for the shooting. they will only say he's a man in his 20s they are looking for a second suspect but will not identify him. >> we are still developing leads trying to get answers this is an ongoing investigation. we don't want to compromise this investigation. >> reporter: police believe the man they have in custody has gang ties. the family of the victim says ulysses did not. >> loved to make friends and the only mistake he made yesterday was to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and wear the wrong color. but he was never involved in any gangs or anything.

he was a good kid. and i'm really gonna miss him. >> reporter: richmond police officers have been coming and going from this apartment complex all morning. lyanne melendez is at the high school the entire football team has shown up to grieve together. katie marzullo, abc7 news. right now all lanes are clear on highway 238 in hayward after a deadly morning crash trapped a car beneath a big rig. the accident blocked several lanes during the morning commute. it happened south of the hesperian boulevard off-ramp. the car collided with to big rigs the crash pin add that sedan under one of them, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. a roll over crash in pittsburg off highway 4 sent eight to the hospital, including two babies, all members of an antioch family.

the chp received calls about a woman holding a child on the side of the freeway. officers arrived to find the vehicle flipped over. chp says four adults, two teenagers and two infants were taken to local hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. chp is investigating how many were in seat belts. new details about the man who killed six people at a wisconsin sikh temple yesterday. he's identified as 40-year-old wade michael page. police say he was an army vet and may have ties to the white supremacy movement. the fbi is leading the investigation. officials are not aware of any other threats to the sikh temple of wisconsin. page lived five miles away from the temple where he walked in and just opened fire on worshippers during a mid-morning service yesterday. page used a semi-automatic handgun, killing six and

wounding three before police shot him. >> we can say that he was in the military. 1992 to 1998, had a general discharge he was ineligible for reenlistment. right now, he is the only shooter that was involved at the temple. >> the southern poverty law center says page used to play in heavy metal white power bands. a few hours from now are more than 2,000 union janitors plan to march ahead of a possible strike their contract expired last week they've agreed to stay be the job for now while negotiations continue. the janitors have authorized a strike if talks break down. sticking point is the cost of health care janitors clean over 400 buildings in san francisco. san jose police officers' association will

nasa scientists are preparing for the rover to begin digging into the red planet, next up, after the one ton rover made an impressive landing yesterday. these are some of the first images curiosity as beamed back with more to come. karen travers has the latest. >> reporter: it was a rocket celebration at nasa overnight as scientists let out a huge sigh of relief when the rover named curiosity reached mars. eight months, 352 million miles and a tense seven minutes as curiosity approached the red planet

ending with a flawless landing. a feat in engineering. curiosity zipped through the martian atmosphere at 13,000 miles per hour before the finish line it slowed to a crawl of two miles per hour as cables carefully brought the rover down to the surface of mars. >> that rocked. >> reporter: as it approached for landing the rover transformed six times, 76 explosions that needed to be executed in perfect sync. curiosity sent back these black and white images from inside the martian crater you can see wheel and shadow from the afternoon sun. it was a huge victory for nasa, an olympic moment for the scientists and engineers who spent years working on the mission. >> we were not sure we were going to win. this was a goal. >> it didn't come cheap a whooping 2.5 billion dollar gamble nasa hopes will payoff with new discoveries. >> we are trying to understand
