california to seattle made a safe emergency landing in san jose this morning. the pilot told passenger there is was a problem and they to land in san same the pilot told them -- the airport told them the pilot said the plane was having a catastrophic mechanical failure. sue thompson joins us live with the story. they had no idea how bad it was? >> reporter: that's right. those passengers had no clue that san jose airport was

preparing for a high level emergency landing on the ground casualty teams and first responders were standing by. this happened less than an hour into the flight out of ontario, california. passengers on flight 539 knew something was wrong in the air leaving ontario, california en route to seattle. >> babies were crying at the same time when it happened. we had two babies next to us they were all crying. we all knew something was going on. >> reporter: what passengers didn't know was the pilot declare add emergency and needed priority landing. a reported catastrophic electrical failure happened onboard and the plane was decompressing. passengers could feel it. >> i'm an old man my ears started hurting, i was in pain. >> reporter: from sky 7 hd you could see on the ground that crews were standing by. the multi-casualty incident

plan was in place. crews preparing for the worst. >> then the captain said we're really sorry but they have a problem with the cabin pressure, but it is under control now. i felt like the plane was going down. sure enough it was. in a few minutes he said we're landing. >> reporter: she did overhear one of few crewmembers say, there might be a fire. >> it was scary. you a sound, babies were crying and we all knew something was going on. >> reporter: 20 minutes later for those 131 passengers it was over. the boeing 737 landed safely in san jose. most had no idea what had happened. on the ground crews didn't take any chances. >> safety is obviously the number one concern here always. it is very, very important that we're prepared. >> reporter: now the big question remains is what did happen onboard that airlines flight, alaska airlines

launching an investigation and looking into that now. we can tell you passengers were offered a refund by the airlines and alaska airlines is busy trying to bus 131 passengers to oakland, san francisco and trying to get them out of san jose into seattle for some it could be a full day doing that sue thompson, abc7 news. developing news, car crashed into a san francisco landry mat today after clipping a pedestrian. take a look at the scene at the san francisco coin laundry. witnesses tells us the woman drive the blue car got hit by another car, lost control and ran into the laundromat in the tenderloin. the car bumped that man's leg and stopped short of hitting a second man. no word on anyone being cited by police. another moderate quake has shaken a wide area of southern california.

survey reports magnitude 4.5 quake hit after 9:30 this morning, about 35 miles southeast of los angeles. magnitude 4.4 centered around that same area hit late last night, no damage or injuries were reported. false alarm was sent out this morning by contra costa county health services warning martinez residents about an emergency at the shell refinery there was no idea emergency at the refine right was a mistake. officials say automated calls went out and sirens were activated around 7:15 this morning. residents were being notified to shelter-in-place. after the sheriff's department told us shell accidentally activated atlert. the refinery released this statement, shell did not intend to activate the sirens, there was no fire and no need to shelter-in-place there was a small operational issue being addressed and has no threat of tim pack. tense moments for residents of a san ramon

housing complex this morning a crew broke a one inch gasline 8:30. it took an hour for pg&e to stop that gas leak. the pipe served 24 units in the complex. pg&e said it would take a few hours to restore service. live more police believe speed may have caused a crash that killed a motorcyclist this morning. the biker lost control approaching portola avenue around 12:35 in morning. a driver told police the motorcyclist passed him going really fast. he didn't see the crash. police would like to talk with anyone who witnessed the accident. lots of excitement in san jose now. the grand opening of a new multi-million dollar casino. the city says it brings lots of jobs and potential for a lot of tax revenue. karina rusk joins us. the casino opened 8:00 in the morning? >> reporter: right. and the timing may seem odd

for a casino, unless you under stan the reason. ribbon-cutting did take place this morning to take full advantage of a number considered lucky in asian culture, 8. the scissors came out 8 a.m., 8th day of the 8th month of the year. the mayor called this a lucky day for all of san jose because of the jobs and tax revenue casino matrix will generate for the city. the 50 million dollar new establishment replaces the old guard den city venue and the private investment in this state-of-the-art casino is already paying off. , there are no slotons this is machines. it employees 300 more people than the old casino and is expected to contribute about three million additional tax dollars. while casino matrix is all about elegant entertainment, the speeches today are more

about the win-win deal for the city. >> this is a big project that employed over 1200 construction workers. we currently have 787 employees working here. we're confident we are going to be the largest contributor to the city coffers. >> this club alone will generate more tax revenues for san jose than valley fair and santana row combined.
