doesn't get done. you know, it's cool to work with common, i love the first film i want to do that. i was like listen john wick training and action is no joke. he was like, that's why i'm here. >> i can remember nights going home to my hotel and like, working on the choreography, the fight sequences. i got it in my room, i'm on the floor, spinning around and i get there the next day and chad is like, we going to change this. >> yeah. >> i had this thing -- >> throw it all out the window. it was a completely different thing. the quality and being present and in the moment was something i had to learn. it was also like dance. >> i have 700 extras, tyler and the bates and the rock band. looking like, i got to run on stage with a gun, come out looking like the helicopter is up there, the cameras, this is my job. >> i like the intensity of it and the opportunity of it. and striving to try and make it great.

i'll kill them all. >> what do you dig most about breathing life into the character of john wick? >> i love his will, i love he's fighting for his life. the tone of the film, there is a humor to it. you know, there's a hyperreality to it. for him and i think he's got a good sense of humor. i just like him. i like john wick. i root for him. >> the story behind it, the fact he wants to get out of that w l world you feel compassion for it. he never looks like he's injohn kasich -- enjoying what he's doing. you see it as a subculture. it is a different world completely. >> sitting on a rooftop in brooklyn, i'm like oh, i'm the director, action. i forgot to yell cut the first two or three times. i'm watching him walking up with a pigeon in their hand and they're all done and lawrence is like you going to yell cut?

>> the coolest thing is the way the audience has been responding. that's ultimately why we do this. like, this is for the audience. by the time you get halfway through this movie, you think you know the entire thing about the world, and then boom, here's another level that you weren't even aware of. it's really kind of cool. ♪ heck yeah. >> oh, okay. >> pardon me, sir i think you have the wrong car. >> for actor james mac avoy simply reading the street from the thriller, split, was a mind bending experience. >> i was confused.

like the audience. and then i was enlightened and then i was confused again at something else and there would be enlightening, then i'd be confused. he answers every question with another question. so you have answers but there's another mystery that's going to -- and the whole movie is like that which i think is brilliant. i got to the end of the script, i called him and i said if you want me to do this i really want to be in it. >> my name is headwick i have red socks. >> how old are you? >> nine. >> the human brain is the most complex object in the universe. >> the only way we're getting out here is if lets us out. >> aren't you the clever one. >> and james believes the director is a one of a kind fi

maker. >> he's one of the few people i've worked with is committed to the original vision he has in his mind and doesn't want that to alter during the film process. so this thing you read months before you see the final film is pretty much what you see in the final film. the editing process isn't there to turn it on his head. that works, whatever you did. not what we originally thought but it looked cool, that's cool. none of that. getting exactly what you wanted on the page. that was -- shows a lot of commitment to his unique story telling and his original story telling, which is something that's fairly rare these days in the film industry. there's not a lot of original stories being told. >> my name is headwick. i have red socks.

were eager to work with visionary whipple lash director damian shizell in lala land. >> i think he's very close to what made him fall in love with movies in the first place. he gets always a place he draws from. he's able to transfer that to the audience. and that's really special qualities. every time people kind of leave his films they have a feeling of why they fell in love with movies in the first place. >> i was excited to meet him, because i liked whiplash. and he's just so passionate. and has, you know, quite a vision. i think he had most of the movie mapped out in his head. >> maybe i'm not good enough. >> yes you are. >> maybe i'm not. >> this is the dream. it's conflict and compromised and very very exciting. ♪ >> and preparing the demanding musical numbers was a daunting

challenge. >> the first thing i would be shooting was the scene where i'm playing on the piano, the theme of the movie. it's where our two characters meet for the first time. >> damian wanted to shoot everything in one shot, at least of all the piano scenes or the songs or the dance numbers for the most part. because he didn't want to feel like there was any sort of trick editing. i lost a little sleep over that as you can imagine. ♪ >> the singing is always challenging for me. ♪ here's to the ones who dream >> and i think also, just the tone of the movie. that was my biggest kind of concern all throughout. how the scenes would all fit together, i think i was -- yeah, thought about that a lot. ♪

>> when i first met with ben i was 15 and i was like there's no way i was going to get the part. but he's going to say i'm too young. then it kind of turned out he -- i got a phone call from him and then when we started filming, i was 17 almost 18. and i think that was the perfect age because loretta is still a little girl and kind of becomes a young woman, which is kind of -- i think we felt the same things. it's a confusing time, it's weird. you feel young but you're not. you see the start of her and the middle and end. she has three different stages that you see her at in this growth. >> i signed up to fight in the war. i went away a soldier, i came home an outlaw. >> you're in this life. >> you mentioned ben what was your experience like working with him while he was taking on multi-hyphenated roles? >> his sets in general, it felt

epic, it's unlike anything, the feeling of it. especially because it's in the 20s, you know, the gangster gen genre. he's directing and he'll go in a scene with you. most of my scenes were with ben. but you don't ever feel like he's critiquing you as a director or judging you or anything. it's like, he's in the scene. and then it's cut and then he'll like, oh, give you notes on it or set up a shot. it's just like -- i don't understand how he -- is thinking about it all at the same time. i don't. it's really amazing. >> if god rewrites the bible to cast gambling as virtuous i will refrain from speaking about it. but until then we don't get to pick our sins, mr. coughlin. >> what were some of the women in this game you really respect and look up to? >> wow. obviously i look up to my sister, number one.
