an extraordinary announcement from north korea tonight. it is suspending its nuclear and long-range missile tests and shutting down its nuclear test site. all this just weeks before that first meeting between president trump and north korea's leader kim jong-un. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm auma dates. dan ashley is off. president trump welcomes north korea's announcement and called it big progress. but it was met with skepticism in japan especially since the

announcement didn't say kim jong-un is getting rid of his nuclear stockpile. >> reporter: north korea's official news agency released the stunning announcement on its website, that it will freeze its nuclear tests and stop its long-r interconnental missile program that threatens u.s. cities, even saying it will shutdown a nuclear test site all in a drive to shift the national focus to improving the economy. >> we need to be careful because every treaty, every promise that north korea has ever made has been broken. and so we will need to not trust but verify, but tris trust, verify, verify and north korean statement did not mention anything about the reclusive country's existing nuclear weapons arsenal. abc's chief global affairs correspondent commenting on the timing of the announcement. >> this is all in preparation, of course, for that potential meeting between donald trump and kim jong-un. next week kim is meeting with south korea's president as a

year, 2021. the principal said the second student immediately reported the incident. school officials then called police who determined that the male student did have a plan to harm other students. in a letter to parents she wrote both the district considers this offense to be extremely serious and will take appropriate disciplinary consequences. the student was arrested and booked into juvenile hall. a comcast technician is facing charges of grand theft and elderly abuse tonight. police say christian monroy stole jewelry from customer's homes. most of them were in daily city and half moon bay. he worked for comcast between september 2016 and august 2017. if you think you may have been a victim just call the san mateo county sheriff's office or daily city police. well, there's big relief for commuters starting today. a third lane has been added for the eastbound direction of the

police need your help. they released photos in the hopes that someone will recognize this person. officers say he exposed him at the library near the international language area last friday afternoon just after 4:00 p.m. police described him as a man in his 40s, 170 pounds, 5'10" tall, balding and wearing glasses. call police if you have any information. >> the berkeley police department is asking for help with a sexual assault case. it happened yesterday bean 11:00 and 11:30 a.m. on the 1500 block of addison street. the victim was a high school aged girl who was grabbed from behind. she told police the suspect covered her mouth and pressed a gun into her side. she says she was taken to a side yard where she was sexually assaulted. the suspect was described as a black male adult, possibly in his 30s, 5'7" medium build, wearing a black hooded

and we begin this half-hour with that deadly engine explosion on southwest flight 180. the faa is giving airlines 20 days to some spect jet engines of the same type after fan blades broke off, smashing a window and killing a woman seated there. and tonight southwest is responding with its own video. here's abc reporter linda janice. >> reporter: tonight the faa issuing a rare objective, requiring airlines to inspect fan blades on 737 engines within 20 days. it comes after a broken fan blade on a southwest flight 1380 caused an explosion killing passenger jennifer riordan who was nearly sucked out of the

plane. the directive affects 352 engines in the u.s. and 681 worldwide. airlines say they've inspeckted more than 150 already. after a similar incident in 2016 also an a southwest jet the faa proposed originally inspecting just 220 engines. but they never finalized that. >> finally after 20 mints the faa has found a reason to unclog the bureaucratic mess and it's the death of ms. reordan that did it the faa says in this announcement it is calling for those inspections because it believes the problem could exist
