out how it got started. i am spencer christian, breezy and sprinkles. coming up. and that breaking news is in san francisco. sky 7 is over interstate 80 near fifth street in san francisco right before you get onto the bay bridge. an officer was hurt when he was dragged by a car. >> the officer pulled a car over but chp says she dried to drive away dragging the officer. >> the officer is being treated for injuries. several people who are stuck in the backup posted pictures to social media. >> here is a look, you can see the right lanes are blocked but some cars gets through. on a friday afternoon, you know this is causing problems.

>> eastbound, that is the difficult part. and also, in city streets trying to get onto the bay bridge that is tough as well. >> this is a live look from south beach camera which is right near the freeway. abc7 news reporter is live on the scene for us. >> reporter: we are on interstate 80. i am joined by officer williams. how is that chp officer doing? >> right now, he is alert and conscious and was transported and is going to be checked out. he obviously had road rash from the collision. we are hoping that he will be all right. >> reporter: take us back to initially what started this is this. >> that motorcycle officer made a stop. and he contacted the driver and through talking to thedriver,

for some reason, the driver decided to leave the scene. as the driver was fleeing the scene, managed to drag the officer down the roadway. driving him about a good 750-1000 feet. and coming to arrest on the right shoulder where you can see the vehicle. that officer was able to get up on his feet and then we had other officers there immediately detained the driver and several passengers in the vehicle and the driver is now in custody. >> reporter: what do we know about this driver? >> female. we don't know a whole lot right now as fars why she did what she did and hoping to find that out. >> reporter: any other people injured in the other vehicles. >> everybody was able to talk to us. >> reporter: you got a lot of officers out here taking

>> i am dan ashley. >> and i am kristen sze in for ama daetz. more than 50 rapes and a dozen burglaries. >> dna evidence led police to this arrest. today we sent out this push alert. as the suspect appeared in sacramento court for the first time. >> eric thomas was there. >> reporter: the 72-year-old ex-police officer was in a wheelchair when deputies rolled him into a courtroom. he looked frail and elderly and spoke in a small voice that we all strained to hear. he is officially charged with two counts of murdering a sacramento couple in 1978. and suspected of ten more murders and 50 rapes. the crimes spanned a decade.

man. that man shares a rare genetic marker with the killer. but officials say they have now arrested the right man. a led to his arrest and new concerns for genealogical sites and the people who subscribe to them. melanie woodrow explains. >> genealogy databases are good for more than just learning who your relatives are. they are good for solving cold case homicide. >> reporter: database helped to identify joseph de angelo. it has also been the policy to inform users that the database could be used for other users.

following a huge construction fire next door. still smoldering on wednesday. demolition began yesterday. yet to determine the cause. lyanne melendez is live from concord with the latest. >> reporter: well residents were notified via e-mail that they would be able to return after 3:00 this afternoon. so many are already in there. relieved and grateful. it will take days or weeks to know what caused this fire. >> reporter: liz and patrick callahan finally allowed to return to the renaissance square complex. >> first of all, gratitude. we are a top apartment. and we would have been gone.

so, you know, gratitude. policemen and firemen were amazing. >> reporter: residents were forced to leave in the early morning hours because of a massive fire next door. that construction fire threatened the apartment complex. for days crews had to deal with smoldering fires and the threat of an unstabe structure. >> we have made progress in suppressing the hot spot the extinguishing the remaining fires. >> reporter: investigators from the bureau of alcohol tobacco firearms and explosives will called in. 20 of them are here toetermine how it was started and if arson was solved. >> include video evidence, eyewitness testimony, and utiliz utilizes accelerant technology.

as we head towards the weekend it will be a combination sky of sun and clouds and we will throw in a few drops while we are at it. take a look at your temperatures right now. you will notice most are in the comfort zone, low to mid-50s from san francisco and in san jose. 53 degrees in livermore. a live picture looking along the embarcadero. it's a beautiful view. here's another gorgeous view from our exploratorium camera. it's going to be cooler than average through the weekend so get used to this idea. 5:00 a.m. tomorrow we will see a few showers developing, a little drizzle in the east bay. can't rule out showers or sprinkles just about anywhere. by noontimet's north of the bay area, and it carries over sunday, isolated at best, and a little drizzle sunday morning. not a game changer.
