6.9 and now the fire department is warning of dangerously high levels of sulfur dioxide gas. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm oma dates. dan ashley is off. the 6.9 quake was i centered. meanwhile 70 ehawaiian national guards men have been sent to the area to assist in the volcano response effort. >> reporter: a river of molten magma from the kilauea volcano devouring streets and homes on the island. >> we all have to understand how traumatic this is for the people affected. >> reporter: scorching lava chewing through forests. in some parts bubbling and bursing 100 feet in the air.

>> you could definitely feel the heat. you could feel the power of the eruption. >> reporter: dangerous levels of sulfur dioxide prompting a strong warning to officials who said exposure to the gas poses an immediate threat to life. >> i think we're one street over from the lava right now. >> reporter: nearly 2,000 people forced from their homes. the national guard activated. >> they're really here the support the first responders. >> reporter: thursday's eruptions came hours and friday the shaking continued with another large quake. witnesses compared the terrifying large sound to a jet engine. >> my neighbor came over and said what was that awful noise. he said i've never heard a noise like that and i've been here for 40 years. >> reporter: officials warning the area is unstable. >> the lava is unpredictable. not sure what course it will take. >> reporter: officials say they have no idea when these eruptions might stop and when

these evacuees could return to their neighborhoods. they say it could be days or even weeks before people could go home. >> two of the largest airlines serving hawaii are waiving change fees. united and airlines are allowing them to change their flights without paying a fee. developing news, hanz fluorine posted this photo of himself with a caption there's a rescue going on and it's me. i think i broke my leg. he broke both his leg and his heel. a 15-year-old girl is recovering tonight after being bitten by a small rattlesnake in clayton. it happened on mount davidson court just before 4:00 p.m.

paramedics treated the girl on the spot before she went to the hospital. there is no word on her condition tonight. gilroy's police chief explained today how he became a crime victim himself. his says the decision to leave his badge and gun in his personal vehicle when attending a junior graduation ceremony was made when he saw metal detecters at the event entrance. he said he did not want to draw attention to his job as a peace officer so he left his gear in his truck but not in a lock box as required by state law. >> there certainly is an administrative sanction that will be as a result of this i'm sure. >> modesto police say they've recovered the stolen truck but not the gun or badge. he said he's asked the city manager to bring in a third

party to help investigate the incident. a day after a tenant opened fire at an apartment complex we now learn why he targeted his victims. they say it's the result of a tenant dispute. dion lim has more. >> it was a long painful day. >> reporter: she lives in one of the nine units and knew one of the victims sabrina, lou. >> she loved pets. i have a dog, too, so we would just talk. i could see her walking her dog. she could see me, and we just had not a very, very close relation, you know, but we are good neighbors. >> reporter: a 71-yield tenant is suspected of shooting his landlord over a pending eviction. >> very considerate of his

tenants. >> reporter: lou's daughter was also shot and later died at general. >> i see a chp officer running down the street with an unconscious woman draped over his shoulder. >> she would help when someone moved out or the place needed renovating. she would always be there helping him. >> reporter: showing the s.w.a.t. team breaking down a door, the suspect was found dead from a self-apparent gunshot wound. >> he never came out of his apartment. he was very eccentric. i think in two years i saw him twice. >> reporter: the family declining to go on camera requesting privacy. a celebrity chef in the east bay is in jail tonight. he stands accused of robbing a bank earlier this week. he talked with abc 7 reporter

leslie brinken today. >> reporter: val teeno admitted to robbing this city bank around 11:00 a.m. on wednesday. he said i went inside, good morning, nobody moves this is robbery. i talked to him at a the detention facility armed with only a reporter's notebook, no cameras, no cellphone. the celebrity chef described his desperation after his acclaimed restaurant endowntown walnut creek closed down in late 2016 and he became unemployed. he said we'd been struggling a lot financially and i have a family. he said i feel bad. it wasn't something i was planning or doing for a living. he claims that wednesday morning he decided to get money and went to the bank. it was a fake gun, he said, a bb gun. he said he told the frighten teller nothing's going to happen, just put the money aside. >> we were told there was a pistol, a firearm and that's what we were reacting on.

>> reporter: did he threaten the bank clerk? >> i understand he presented it in a manner that was threatening. the tellers complied and gave him the money and he fled the bank. >> reporter: witness events and surveillance video allowed police to get a license plate number on the dark mare sadies. police say he had about $15,000 in cash. they found luke as he drove away from his house and arrested him at this athletic club parking lot in lafayette just three hours after the heist. he faces robbery charges and being held on $100,000 bail. luken asked me to call his wife and asked me to post bail. she did not answer her cellphone. luken said he wrote an apology to the bank teller that says in part, i'm sorry for the convenience, to be in front of you with a gun. berkeley police say they've arrested a 27 parolee in

attempted robbing of a cal state. video shows she fought off the attack. it happened saturday morning. the man appeared to have a gun in his left hand. the woman finally got away and ran to safety. police arrested mckin s of berkeley yesterday. u krurks berkeley also named him the suspect in the sexual assault of a high school student in april. he was booked for several sexual assault charges including a parole violation. well, uc berkeley is ready to transform peoples park. what's going to be built and how the homeless who live there figure into the plans. also butting heads over bart. flexing their legal muscles, it my delay a big project. and the weather is changing as you begin your weekend plans. i'll let you know if it's going

now it's the home for the homeless and drug users. it's a controversial plan given the site's history. abc 7 news anchor erin thomas has the story. >> reporter: peoples park was born in the late '60s out of the white hot opposition to government policies including the vietnam war. it was part of the free speech movement. co-founder michael of berkeley says it always will be. >> it's probably the only place in the country that you can go sign-up and have a rally and say what you want. >> reporter: that's why he opposes plans to build university housing on the site. but students and neighbors say the park is more synonymous with crime and homelessness now than free speech. >> it's pretty dangerous. oftentimes we get a lot of alerts saying like there's armed robberies that happen. so it kind of gets the students on their toes especially at nighttime. >> reporter: the university says this plan would change that and more. >> there we can, a, put up

student housing. we can meet the university's responsibility to work with the city and address the homeless situation. we can take a major step in terms of combating crime and revitalizing that neighborhood. >> reporter: uc berkeley currently has about 8,000 student beds on campus. this is part of a plan to double that. it calls for building enough housing for a thousand students on three acre site as well as up to 125 permanent housing units from the homeless. the money would come from private developers working with the university. berkeley's mayor is onboard. >> i think the majority of the city is ready. >> reporter: but some of the homeless worry they're being blamed for problems in the park is this all planned for moving them out. >> you can say it's a bad park all you want. but you've been around long enough and kids come, students come, all type of people come.

>> reporter: if things go as planned the project will take four years to complete. abc 7 news. now to the latest developments in san francisco's motorized scooter invasion. a crew from public works has been out today picking up scooters that are blocking sidewalks so far the sithy hcit confiscated 450 scooters. the san jose sharks are looking to put the brakes on the bart extension to downtown san jose. the team's parent company has filed a lawsuit claiming the project doesn't adequately plan for construction impacts and lost parking near the sap center. the san antonio situation says it understands the push. >> we can't do anything to harm the best access of any entertainment facility in the bay area. that is one of the competitive
