on kolo 8 news now midday. i'm dave lawrence. a man is in custody after shooting and injuring a storey county sheriff's deputy during a domestic violence call. it happened around 4-30 saturday afternoon-- in the virginia city highlands. deputies were confronted by 51-year- old charles stutts. stutts fired a rifle several times, hitting one of the deputies and another person who was in the area. the storey county sheriff tells us the deputy returned fire, and stutts surrendered. the deputy and stutts were taken to a hospital for treatment. both are expected to be ok. stutts has been booked into storey county jail on charges including attempted murder of a peace officer. the deputy's name has not been released. he has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated. police say two people shot outside a downtown reno bar... are expected to be ok. the shooting happened early sunday, just before four in the morning... outside the "one-up" bar on west commercial row. police say the two victims were taken to a hospital with non-life- threatening injuries. witnesses say the victims were arguing

before the shooting happened. those men are now wanted by police. one suspect was wearing a dark blue sweatshirt at the time of the shooting. the other was wearing a red san francisco football jersey, and is about 5-foot-five-inches tall. if you know anything that can help police find the shooters, you're urged to call reno police or secret witness. that number is 322-4900. a one-thousand dollar reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. let's go to lindsey matherly with a look at the forecast. a more active storm pattern will set up across the region this week with periods of impact to travel, especially across the sierra. at this time, the greatest impacts will be tuesday and next weekend as a couple of stronger storms bring more widespread and moderate snowfall potential. small adjustments were made to the ongoing forecast, but the overall message remains the same. the storm door is open this week with periods of widespread and moderate snowfall that will likely impact travel across the sierra and may also impact lower valley floors of northeastern california and western nevada . the region will be impacted by a few systems through midweek. the first makes its way into the sierra later this afternoon, the second on tuesday, and the third on wednesday. first system...shower coverage will increase today as a weak

affect the evening commute today so allow for extra time on your drive home. spillover with this initial system will occur later this afternoon for a brief period of time with light accumulations possible for far western nevada and the basin and range. otherwise, snowfall between 2 to 5 inches will be possible along the sierra crest, with an inch or 2 at lake level and along the highway 395 corridor through mono county. foothill locations from carson city northward to susanville could also see around a couple of inches with this initial system. it was a close call at heavenly ski resort after a chair fell off the north bowl lift yesterday morning. kolo 8 viewer lara miller sent us this video. she was on the ski lift when it happened. the resort stopped operating the chair lift immediately. ski patrol was able to safely evacuate all 65 people on the lift. no one was hurt. heavenly's lift maintenance team is investigating the cause of the chair's fall. it's no surprise that we've gotten a good amount of snow this year in the sierra. today, nevada will find out exactly how much with the winter's first manual survey. a hydrologist from the natural resources conservation service is heading up to the mount rose summit to measure the snowpack. that will give us an idea where we stand for the year - and what we can expect for the region's water supply for next year. ice skaters took advantage of the frozen little washoe lake over the weekend. but its important to

dangers to walking or playing on ice "nats of hockey" parents and kids from the area are turning little washoe lake into their own personal ice skating rink. many are taking advantage of the open space. these children were under parental supervision. one parent even tested out the depth of the ice with a drill... saying it's deeper than the recommended four inches. "this is pretty thick ice right now. it's really solid. you don't hear any cracking. we've been all the way around the lake, just about everywhere. one of the tell tell signs is the clarity of the ice. the clearer it is, the milkier it is, the weaker it is." while it is free and spacious... those skating on the frozen lake, do so at their own risk. the truckee meadows fire protection district... warns it's rarely safe to walk or play on ice. no matter how deep the water is... once you fall in... the ice cold temperature can send you into hypothermic shock almost instantly.

the fire protection district is advising people to not head out on the ice. a driver was not injured after crashing his pickup into a local grocery store. this was the scene at raley's on mayberry and hunter lake drive around 2:30 saturday afternoon. according to reno fire, the driver had his foot on the accelerator, causing him to crash into the wall. the wheels continued to spin while the car was stuck, causing it to heat up and catch fire. fortunately, there's a fire station right across the street from the store, so the response was almost immediate. he was unharmed as a result of the accident but there was some sort of symptom that caused him to become altered and drive into the building. the accident left a small scrape on the building. no one else was injured. the cause of the accident is still under investigation. nevada energy regulators are meeting this week to decide whether to hold off on new rates for solar power customers. the nevada bureau of consumer protection filed a request last week to put a hold on the new rate structure.

solar installer in the u-s, said it will stop selling and installing solar panels on rooftops across nevada because of the decision to move forward with the new rates. the changes were scheduled to go into effect on january first. the base service charge for solar customers would go up from roughly 5-to-6 dollars across the state. the amount the utility pays to buy power back from rooftop solar panels would also change. the commission is having a meeting to discuss whether to put a hold on the rate change... this thursday at 10 a-m... website. tesla motors says it delivered thousands of electric cars to dealers across the country last year. the company says 50- thousand-580 finished vehicles were produced in 2015. that's on the low end of the projection made by c-e-o elon musk. in october, he said the company would produce between 50- and 55- thousand. company executives say even more electric cars will be made in 2016. tesla motors is on

president barack obama used his weekly address to announce a major new initiative. he says it's time to get serious about gun control. deadly mass shootings seem to be a regular occurrence in america. and president obama has regularly called for tougher restrictions on guns. now, the president says he isn't waiting any longer. he'll be meeting with attorney general loretta lynch monday to discuss options for tightening gun laws. "my new year's resolution is to move forward on our unfinished business as much as i can.//butted to.//that's especially true for one piece of unfinished business, that's our epidemic of gun violence." sources say the president is expected to take executive action... without congressional approval... expanding background checks. but some republican presidential candidates are already promising to reverse any action obama takes - if they win

the site of the san bernardino shooting rampage that left 14 people dead and 21 injured, is set to reopen today. there will be tighter security as the inland regional center's 6- hundred employees return to work. the center has been closed since december 2nd when killers syed rizwan farook and his wife tashfeen malik started their shooting rampage. both were killed later in a shootout with police. "most of us are relieved to be back at work. we want to continue with the normalcy and miss each other very much." farook was an inspector for san bernardino county's department of public health. he worked with many of the victims who were at the center for a training session and holiday party. ethan couch... the texas teen who went on the run with his mother... is in a detention center in mexico today. he is fighting extradition after being captured last week -- and could spend months locked up in mexico. matt gutman is in has the latest.

many people are cleaning out their closets and donating unwanted items to charity. at saint vincent's thrift store... some of those items donated range from the obscure to rare. thrift stores are known for being the place to find unique items... things that are out of style... or just not used anymore. at st. vincent's thrift shop... they're usually more than happy to take your unwanted items. most donations translate into food and services for those in need. "a bag of clothes for instance is 32 meals in the dining room so it's very helpful" but sometimes... what's left in the donation bin... isn't very helpful.

"we had in the first three months 60,000 people, 1,000 on saturday." and it's been well received by locals and visitors alike. honda has confirmed an airbag inflator that ruptured in a crash, is what killed a teenager last summer. this marks the ninth fatality linked to the faulty airbags made by japan's takata. when the inflator ruptures it can send metal and plastic flying at the driver or passengers.. sometimes causing fatal injuries. the takata recalls now involve at least 23 million inflators and 11 automakers. severe weather continues to pound the midwest. just as the waters recede in some areas... residents in others are stil fighting to save their homes. and what would you do with four-million- dollars? it's the largest powerball in years. what are your odds of winning? but first... lindsey matherly will be back with your complete

breaking news from reno police. a 16-year-old shooting victim succumbed to his injuries this weekend. it was back on on tuesday, december 29th when the teen was shot at pat baker park. the 16 year old was hit in the head, causing him to crash the car he was driving.
