problem after a thief broke into their boxes and stole their mail. thanks for joining us on kolo 8 news now midday. i'm dave lawrence. a 19-year-old man has died after being pulled from a frozen reno pond reno police and firefighters say just before 3:30am the man fell through the ice at a pond at teglia's paradise park. rescue crews say the man was in the water for about half an hour before being pulled out. the washoe county hasty team helped city crews. he died after being taken to a hospital. his name has not been released. the incident is still under investigation. let's go to lindsey matherly with a look at the forecast. quiet weather expected today before another weak pacific storm moves through late tonight into saturday with accumulating snowfall expected across the sierra and light snow possible across western nevada. a couple more weak storms are possible next week with temperatures remaining below normal. current ir satellite imagery showing a widespread area of low stratus across much of western nevada. some of the decks have

through the carson valley this morning with visibility at the minden airport having already dipped near 1/4 mile. some clearing is evident across lassen trafficking- a carson city man accused of human trafficking in north dakota has plead not guilty. kevin fleming... is accused of offering a 14-year-old girl for prostitution. in court yesterday flemings attorney argued that state lawmakers repealed the human trafficking portion of state law under which fleming is charged... and that a new law didn't take effect until after the alleged crime. prosecutors called the argument ludicrous. another person from las vegas also charged with human trafficking in the case plead not guilty. police found the teenage girl at a hotel in mynot in april of last year.. after receiving a report about her from her mother in las vegas. an investigation is underway to track down the thieves who broke into a communal mailbox in a stead neighborhood. stealing mail is a federal felony, punishable by two years

the mailboxes in stead are being replaced with stronger, more secure units and residents are being told to pick up their mail at the stead post office in the meantime. if you have any information about this theft, you can call the postal service's national tipline or secret witness at 322- 4900. a new report has ranked nevada dead last for education. education week released a report yesterday... that shows nevada performing significantly worse than the national average in several areas... including student performance and school financing. the state earned an overall d grade while the country as a whole earned a c. nevada's overall score slightly increased... but it still fell behind mississippi... which was previously ranked last. nevada interim superintendent steve canavero called the results "disheartening".... but said recent investments in public schools haven't had a chance to pay off yet. state lawmakers increased public school

last year. they also made several reforms... including a rule that students can no longer be promoted to fourth grade unless they can read. today anim a meeting will be held today to discuss overcrowding in washoe county classrooms. the district's "overcrowding and repairs committee" will analyze the money and needs for any new construction. six schools are facing a projected 120 percent increase over the next few years. last month, the school board voted to keep those schools on a balanced calendar until the 2017-18 school year. a district judge has delayed his decision on whether nevada should pay thousands of dollars to parents for private school tuition. judge james wilson says more time is needed to consider the preliminary injunction. education savings accounts payments are scheduled to begin february first. parents can use the money to pay for private school tuition or

the child's state education funding. a suit filed in august claims the new law violates nevada's constitution which requires funds to be used for public schools.### shot ots thanks to a 65-thousand dollar grant from the nevada office of traffic safety... the reno police department has new equipment that helps them analyze traffic accidents. the new equipment is called 'faro'. it can take an image, in 360 degrees-- rendering that image in 3-d form. it takes a matter of minutes as opposed to the old system, which could take hours. but perhaps the biggest impact-- is the new system can be used in a courtroom. sotvo sgt. joe lever, reno police department"it is a lot easier for the jury and judge to see what happened there that night or that day when the accident occurred. therefore making that person responsible, for lack of better term, pay for what they did." the old system would only render an image in 2-d, and also required double the number of

"snakes alive" is a new exhibit that opens tomorrow the exhibit will feature more than 20 live venomous snakes along interactive displays. there will also be non- venomous snakes that close. the exhibit is designed misunderstandings snakes. now to those anxious moments on a united airlines flight that forced an emergency landing. a passenger screaming and reportedly attacking a flight attendant last night. much of it... caught on camera. abc's marci gonzalez reports. script: nats: woman cursing - bleeped out police- questioning this woman...after an in- flight outburst last

that forced- pilots to make an emergency landing. nats: atc do you nee any other assistance besides just the police at the gate? the united express flight with 69 passengers and four crew members on board took off from new york's la guardia airport... just after 7pm... headed for chicago.. 30 minutes into the flight... the passenger reportedly asked if she could get off the plane. nats: scream when a flight attendant said no.. nats "she scratched my face." passegers claim the woman lost control.. sot - witness "the girl went crazy and attacked her.. and started scratching her face up? and ripped her necklace off at one point the woman reportedly yelled- that she was "bi-polar"- witnesses say - she started attacking another woman that's when three other passengers stepped in.. sot - witness "grabbed her and pulled her to the ground and subdued her by tying her up with some seat bealts and some guy

a georgia teacher is on after video shows the teacher dragging a student by his hoodie. reports. --reporter pkg-as follows-- "i would never expect for a teacher to do a student like that.' it's a disturbing video that now has a greenville teacher off of the job. "dragged him out of the desk right here." lorrie ford is the stepmother of the student seen in this december 18th cellphone video obtained exclusively by channel 2 action news. there's no sound in the video, but she says the situation started when the greenville school teacher asked the 14- year-old student to remove his hoodie. he

ford says that's when things escalated. "she started pulling the hood and it was moving the desk and the desk went up against the wall and then she throwed him out the desk." "ford says the teacher then called for a resource officer to come to the classroom and assist. she says her stepson was not hurt, but was taken to the principal's office." ford says the teacher claimed the boy threatened her and that the teacher wanted to press charges. that was before the video surfaced. "if we didn't have the video and she pressed charges then it just would have been on him." thursday i sat down with with the superintendent of schools. before our interview began he watched the video again. "are you alarmed by seeing the video?" "anytime there is an incident involving a student and a teacher, i'm alarmed." superintendent doctor tim dixon tells me the district has launched an investigation and the teacher is now on paid administrative leave. "we want to make the right decision and that's what i'm more interested in." ford says her stepson is back at school and that she is pleased with how

6 months after his gutsy prison break that was caught on camera...the notorious mexican drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman has been re- captured. mexico president enrique pea nieto made the announcement via twitter...saying "mission accomplished. we have it." el chapo is often called the "most powerful drug trafficker in the world." it's unclear right now how and where he was caught. federal authorities have arrested two refugees on terror-related charges. a law enforcement official says the two men had communicated with each other. 24-year-old omar faraj saeed al hardan of houston is set to make his first court appearance in houston today. the justice department says hardan entered the u-s as an iraqi refugee in 2009 and was granted legal permanent resident status in 2011. he was arrested by federal agents yesterday and charged with attempting to provide material support to isis and other charges.

aws mohammed younis al-jayab of sacramento has been charged with making a false statement involving international terrorism. he's also due in court today. the two cases come as some americans worry terrorists could enter the u-s posing as refugees from war-torn nations. that concern was amplified after the paris terror attacks in november. a former f-b-i agent weighed in: "that's a concern, is that the refugee wave could contain folks that represent a threat to our national security or to the national security of european nations." if convicted... hardan faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a 250- thousand-dollar fine. today marks five years since a deadly spree shooting in tucson, arizona that left then- congresswoman gabrielle giffords severely injured and six people dead. among the fatalities -- a nine-year-old girl and the chief judge for the u-s district court in

eighteen people were injured in the attack. giffords was speaking to constituents at a "congress on your corner" event, when 22- year-old jared lee loughner opened fire. authorities believe giffords was the target of the attack. loughner tried to escape, but was taken down by bystanders. they held him until police could take him into custody. giffords spent months learning to walk and speak again. 12 others were wounded but survived the attack. loughner is serving life in prison. it was a wild night at a donald trump rally in vermont. the gop frontrunner was met with protests during his campaign event. meanwhile, maine's governor, a chris christie supporter, has ignited a firestorm with controversial remarks being called a racist rant. abc's kenneth moton has the latest from washington. script: today it's on to south carolina for donald trump but overnight, a volatile welcome in the liberal backyard of bernie sanders. nat "get em out of here! take em out" the gop

supporter, maine who said this about drug traffickers in his state. sot - gov. lepage: "these are guys by the name d-money, smoothie, shifty.""incidentally, half the time they impregnate a young, leave." this morning, lepage to say he's not perfect and he blamed the media. pounced...demanding he renounce the maine governor. as of this morning, no response from christie. kenneth moton, abc news washington and speaking of trump... ballroom on center street on sunday the rally starts at 1 p- o'clock. ohio governor john kasich will also be makign a stop in northern nevada. he is holding a meet and greet at the washoe county g-o-p headquarters next tuesday at 1:45 p-m. both events are open to the public, but an r-s-v-p is requested. president barack obama vetoed legislation that would have repealed the affordable care act and cut federal funding for planned parenthood. it's one of many repeal measures pushed by

american employers and a half million jobs. jobs were added in december. year for jobs gains since 19-99. americans saw their paychecks go up as well. wages grew 2-point-5 percent in december. it matched the gains in october-- which were the best in six years. but first... lindsey matherly will be back
