been freed. >> they were on a training yesterday. then one of their vessels became disabled and drifted into iranian waters. the revolutionary guard apprehended them. >> some tense hours followed. a top iranian navy official said their investigation had determined that the american ship had encountered mechanical trouble and this morning u.s. officials apologized for the incident and the sailors are no longer detained. freed just moments ago. there is also breaking news overnight in the crisis with north korea. the south has just fired shots at a north korean drone that crossed the border. tension has been high since last week when the north claimed it had tested a hydrogen bomb. president obama did not mention the u.s. sailors or north korea during last night's state of the union address, but he did vow that protecting the american people and going after terrorist networks is priority number one.

state of the union to congress, he also warned that america cannot move forward until we fix our politics. abc's stephanie ramos has new reaction to the speech from washington, d.c. she joins us now. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: kendis and reena, good morning to you. the past, future, isis and election 2016 dominated the state of the union address last night with president obama speaking more to viewers at home rather than the lawmakers before him. >> the president of the united states. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: this was it. president obama's last state of the union address before congress and the nation. kicking off the speech acknowledging the 2016 election and tthe horse race in the early primary states. >> and for this final one, i'm going to try to make it a little shorter. [ cheers and applause ] i know some of you are antsy to get back to iowa. [ laughter ] >> reporter: presidential hopefuls marco rubio and bernie sanders sitting in the chamber. without mentioning republican candidates by name, the

>> how can we make our politics reflect what's best in us and not what's worse? [ applause ] >> reporter: but also made a plea for unity. >> i hope we can work together this year on some bipartisan priorities like criminal justice reform. >> reporter: and highlighted past successes and the future. >> the future we want, all of us want, opportunity and security for our families, a rising standard of living, a sustainable, peaceful planet for our kids. all that is within our reach. >> reporter: but republicans challenged the president starting with the gop response from south carolina's governor nikki haley. >> the president's record has often fallen far short of his soaring words. >> reporter: haley even taking a swing at donald trump. >> it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices. >> reporter: today, president obama will kick off his post-state of the union tour making stops in nebraska and louisiana. kendis and reena, back to you.

president announced what he called a new moon shot at curing cancer. stephanie, what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: it's similar to when americans first stepped foot on the moon. president obama essentially saying if that was possible, it's possible to find a cure for cancer, so president obama says he's putting vice president joe biden in charge of carrying out the moon shot to cure cancer that biden called for following his son's death. biden has vowed to spend his next 15 months in office fighting for increased funding for research and development, and he says this is a personal issue after the loss of his son, beau, to brain cancer, which is why president obama says joe is now in charge of mission control. back to you. >> and the president did keep it short, roughly 58 minutes there. well, most of the presidential candidates were live tweeting during president obama's final state of the union address. >> the reactions fell hillary clinton congratulated the president on expanding health care coverage vowing not to put their health care into the hands of republicans.

middle class income has declined $2,000 under president obama. and then there was donald trump. simply said "the speech is really boring, slow, lethargic, very hard to watch." >> stay with abc news for the latest on his state of the union address. later in "the pulse," the first lady's gorgeous dress and john kerry's reaction when someone asked the secretary of state, who are you wearing? let's return to the campaign trail and hillary clinton facing some new trouble just as she releases a new campaign ad. a new abc news/"washington post" poll finds clinton is sliding even further behind bernie sanders, and this is in iowa, by five percentage points. it comes as she releases her new ad spotlighting her commitment with standing with president obama and fighting the gun lobby. those ads will go full steam ahead today in iowa and new hampshire and nationally, as well, on cable. in the meantime, in the gop race, texas senator ted cruz faced protesters in new hampshire who managed to get all

he also came under fresh attack from donald trump who circulated an op-ed from a top harvard law professor saying, there are real questions about whether cruz is a natural born citizen. ted cruz is in a dead heat with trump in iowa but lags far behind in new hampshire. new developments following that deadly isis attack on a popular tourist area in turkey. reports say police have detained three russians connected with isis. the suspects were allegedly in contact with isis fighters in conflict zones and had provided logistical support to the group. yesterday's attack in istanbul killed ten. most of them were german tourists. back to this country and the lake-effect snow in western new york has moved on, but more is on the way. the city of buffalo only got a few inches, but south of there as much as two feet of snow fell in some spots. all major highways were open again overnight. at least one fatality is reported. the result of a head-on collision in the snow between a truck and an ambulance. and as we mentioned,

into western new york, you can see it there, and pennsylvania, as well, by the time it's done, some of those areas could have as much as four to five feet of snow. there's also another storm, an alberta clipper, dropping heavy snow on maine. well, still ahead, major nfl news. at least one team heading back to los angeles. plus, breaking overnight, the national guard moving in as a lead tainted water emergency gets worse. and adrift, a huge ferry breaking free in high winds and smashing into a pier.hey, remember the game when i set the rookie passing record? i mean, you only mentioned what, 50 times... how about when i had three events in one night? well, i've been working on my new superhero move all day! we're non stop, we've gotta have our extra protein.

the driver of that pickup facing a long list of charges after refusing to give up. he even starts driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic, sparks flying from both the tire rim and the truck tailgate. finally a police officer ramming even after that, it took three deputies to get the driver cuffed. and some news out of st. louis, as well. after a 21-year wait and one of the most watched sagas in sports, nfl football is coming back to los angeles this summer. the st. louis rams are the ones who are going to be left behind. the rams leaving after 21 years. they're moving back to l.a. and the san diego chargers may relocate, as well. the oakland raiders, however, are staying in the bay area. st. louis leaders say they're bitterly disappointed the nfl ignored the loyalty of fans there. >> it was a dream come true. we've been waiting for this, wishing for this for 21 years since they've been gone. it's amazing. >> having it here in the number one city in the world, los angeles, are you crazy?

yeah. >> l.a. fans are pretty modest. the rams will likely play at the l.a. coliseum until a new stadium is ready in 2019. that new stadium is being built in inglewood. it'll be the largest in the nfl. well, track and field's international governing body reportedly knew about widespread russian doping for years but did nothing about it. documents obtained by the ap say the international association was so concerned, it feared some athletes might actually die, yet for six years they did nothing about it. the use of drugs and transfusions and only pretended to be shocked when the actual scandal broke. oil prices have yet to bottom out. in asia overnight the price of crude oil fell below $30, and that's a 12-year low, by the way. the spiraling global market has some analysts predicting prices could go even lower to 20 or even $10 a barrel. the plunge is forcing oil giant bp and others to cut thousands of jobs.

we've got some new developments in the worsening water crisis that is plaguing flint, michigan. >> the governor activated the national guard to deliver water and filters. starting in flint this morning, volunteers accompanied by state troopers and state deputies went door-to-door with bottled water. tap water became contaminated with too much lead after it switched its drinking water supply in an effort to save money. some stunning new video from inside the takedown of el chapo, the notorious drug lord. it shows the marines wearing body camera descending on his compound from helicopters. this is all in his mountain hideout. just a day after that meeting with actor sean penn, el chapo wasn't there, but for three months the marines circled, tracking penn and the mexican actress who helped arrange the meeting. finally last week, they got their man. fire crews in oakland, california, worked for hours overnight to free a worker trapped in a sewer line. he's been stuck there for more than 12 hours. officials say there was not

down into the hole. it then buried him up to his chest. winds upwards of 60 miles an hour ripped this ferry right from its moorings in melbourne, australia, this morning. the 637-foot-long "spirit of tasmania" spun 90 degrees from its berth along the dock and smashed into the pier. the ship's boarding and deporting ramps are damaged, rendering it unable to load passengers and vehicles until further notice. nfl defensive tackle devon still is celebrating the biggest victory of his life. his daughter leah beat cancer. he shared the great news on instagram and twitter. >> leah was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma in 2014 and was given a 50/50 chance. she went through repeated rounds of chemo, radiation and other treatments. her last one was monday night, and yesterday leah was declared cancer-free.

checking our top stories, ten u.s. sailors have been released from iranian custody detained after one of their boats became disabled to the persian gulf. president obama vowed protecting americans from terrorists is priority number one in his final state of the union address last night. he also warned that america cannot move forward until we, quote, fix our politics. lake-effect snow in the northeast will dump up to another two feet of snow on top of the 30 inches that's already on the ground in some parts. end up with a total of four to five feet. california, oregon and washington could see another 2 inches of rain with snow in the sierra and northern rockies. dry, but chilly across the south. and as we watch the president's final state of the union address last night, you a lot more gray in his hair now than, say, seven, eight years ago. >> and that's not all that's changed for barack obama and his family. abc's terry moran takes a look.
