thanks for joining us on kolo 8 news now midday. i'm dave lawrence. the morning communte was an icy one for much of northern nevada. several dozen accidents were reported throughout reno-sparks an d washoe valley. this is a look at one of them on i-80 eastbound near the rock boulevard exit. i-80 at lockwood is closed in both directions because of several accidents in the area due to icy roads. let's go to lindsey matherly with a look at the forecast. snow that fell overnight in the valleys is likely to delay warming a bit from the current forecast so we have lowered high temperatures a little in the valleys of western nevada today...even with decreased sky cover. clouds begin to increase

the system moving into the region late tonight and saturday. most recent forecast model guidance shows this system to be a little wetter than previously thought...so we may have to issue an advisory for the tahoe basin again tonight but that will be worked out later this morning or early this afternoon. there are also snow level issues showing up in the forecast models with any precipitation that makes its way into western nevada saturday morning. reno police have arrested a suspect who they say shot at a group of people at an apartment complex on brinkby avenue. police say they recieved a call about shot-fired near the sherwood forest apartments around 5-30 last night. they say the shooter fired shots at a group of people, but no one was hurt. after a search of the complex, officers arrested a suspect. the shooting remains under investigation.

the fourth suspect who was arrested in connection with the murder of a carson city man. 19-year-old jacob huttman is now facing charges of accessory to murder, accessory to robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. three other men have also been arrested in connection with the murder of 18-year-old grant watkins. detectives believe watkins was shot, while selling drugs to the four men early monday morning. police say this investigation continues to be very active and they anticipate additional warrants to be issued. if you have any information about this case call the carson city sheriff's office at 887-2500. in an effort to end shootings in nevada prisons, prison officials have decided to add more guards to our state prisons and teach them how to use rubber bullets. the decision comes after recent lawsuits over prison shootings in nevada, including one at high desert state prison in 2014-- that left an inmate dead. in a meeting yesterday, prision officials also

==bazi on cam tag== trump seemed to take special pleasure in attacking jeb bush last night, and he is back at it today... slamming bush and senator lindsey graham who has just endorsed bush. bazi kanani abc news washington speaking of cruz and the issue over his birth. the republican presidential candidate is now facing a federal lawsuit challenging his eligibility to run for president. newton boris schwartz senior filed a lawsuit yesterday in texas questioning cruz's eligibility. cruz was born in canada but his mother was an american citizen. schwartz cites legal theorists including harvard law professor laurence tribe.. who say while cruz is generally accepted to be a natural-born citizen... no court has definitively ruled on the question... saying cruz is a liability as a candidate because his eligibility will be tied up in lawsuits. and republican presidential hopeful carly fiorina will be in reno for a town hall meeting. she'll be at lakeridge golf course from 3 to 4 o'clock on sunday. this will be her second trip to the silver state

the reno police department has unveiled a new app that will make it easier for you to report crimes in the city. the app called - 'my r-p-d' - cost 35-thousand dollars to build it puts crime data, police reports, a sex offender map, and a community engagement portal, right at your fingertips. "we really recognize the trend of mobile devices and just how much they are used for just about everything nowadays. so it was really important for us to get that into the cellphone of all of our citizens so it can become that much easier." the app is free and you can find it by opening the kolo 8 app and clicking on hot topics. the peppermill is known for its many green programs ... and this weekend the casino will be honored for a new initiative that's creating cleaner air for its guests. the american lung association will present the peppermill ... and owner bill paganetti ... with an award tomorrow night for the casino's clean air initiative. a little more than a year ago ... the casino

system ... which is able to take the smoke-laden air out ... and replace it with fresh air. "what this erv will do, attached to the air handler, it brings in 100% outside air. so, we're discharging stale air inside, and we're bringing in fresh air from the outside." there are 14 e-r-v units installed on the roof of the casino ... and each of them is able to remove more than 12-thousand cubic feet of stale air per minute. a year-long study of the new system showed a cut in energy costs and 866 metric tons of co2 emissions savings ... compared to previous years. the state will soon have more social workers and mental health professionals for nevada schools after being awarded a 5.6 million dollar grant from state officials. eleven districts, and six charter schools will receive the funding, as part of a broad anti- bullying initiative. students were recently surveyed on the health of their school climate.

office near 5000 feet, snow is accumulating on paved surfaces. when the heavier snow ends, melting should begin on pavement, but early morning commuters in the north valleys and other higher elevation highways around reno-sparks- carson city and west central nv could encounter slick or slushy road conditions. 12 people are unaccounted for... after two military aircraft collide in hawaii. a marine corps spokesman says crews are searching for survivors. the coast guard says the aircraft, from the 1st marine aircraft wing, were believed to have collided late thursday off the oahu coast. a total of 12-people were on board the helicopters. witnesses in the area say they heard a loud boom over the water and saw a big flare in the sky. according to officials..an empty life raft was found this morning but no one was on board. a warning this morning about a growing and hoax. scammers who pretend to kidnap people - scaring loved ones into giving them money. the fbi says reports of these virtual kidnappings are on the rise... and many more cases go unreported. abc's gio benitez is here with the story.

it is the chilling phone call that stopped one north carolina mother dead in her tracks -- sot - mother: this man started yelling at me // 'your daughter's been in a car accident.' an anonymous caller telling this woman just days ago that her daughter was in a car accident and injured a young boy.. she's asked us not to reveal her identity. sot - mother: they told me // that they had abducted her. // he said 'if you put the phone down...' // 'we're just gonna shoot her' she says the man on the other line - demanding she head to the bank and take out $2800 for hospital bills - also sending her texts like this one - "if you don't answer the phone kill..." her. sot - mother: a girl got closer to the phone and was sobbing, yelling and screaming 'help me mom, help me, help me mom' // i've never had a scarier moment in my life. the quick-thinking mom did as she was told - but first writes this note to a bank teller on her phone: gives this letter to a bank teller? "help daughter has been kidnapped he is on phone meeting me at walmart help he wants $2800. call police. call my husband." police search for the daughter? and find her safe? it was all a hoax!

with a huge fine in california. the state's public utilities commission says that uber was taking too long to provide information on driver accidents, and how often disabled passengers were turned down. they now face a fine of 7-point-6 million dollars. a spokeswoman for uber says they will pay the fine but plan to appeal the amount. the company says they have since provided all requested information to the state. we're learning more about the hack at hyatt hotels reported last month. the chain says that the breach included restaurants, front desks, spas and parking facilities at 250 hotels in 50 countries. that makes it one of the most wide-ranging cyber attacks on hotels in recent months. the hotel says the breach exposed customers' credit and debit card numbers used between august 13th and december 8th of last year. and just when you thought cell phone companies were becoming more customer-friendly, they keep finding ways to get you. a new survey found overage charges,

virus has the c-d-c considering imposing for pregnant women. the "zika" virus was found in fetal and newborn tissues of babies with microcephaly in brazil. microcephaly is a neurological disorder that can cause babies to be born with abnormally small heads, which leads to severe developmental issues and sometimes death. there is no vaccine to block the zika virus and no medicine to treat it. earlier this week, a case of zika virus was confirmed in a person who had recently traveled to latin america. and now your kolo 8
