enter a plea to a second-degree murder charge february 2nd. melendez her alleged accomplice... was arrested last week in arizona. he remains in jail awaiting extradition to face charges of being an accessory to murder and conspiracy to conceal or destroy evidence. these cold temperatures are also impacting grafitti removal. city officials say cold weather prevents them from using certain graffitti abatement equipment. instead, crews are using spray cans and paint rollers -- which take a lot more time to cover large areas. they say with higher temperatures in the afternoon, they hope to actively tackle the graffiti on some of the larger areas in reno. "anything above, constant temperatures above 40-45 degrees for the commercial sprayer that we do have. is ideal for us to do some graffiti abatement." another issue the city is having is the lack of man power they have to get the job done. they're currently trying to fill two

the reno fire department has a warning to help keep your pets safe during these cold winter months. since january 1st, there have been seven calls to the department for ice just two at this time last year. reno councilwoman naomi duerr and her husband herb duerr, had a scary experience last friday after their dog went chasing after bird on a pond near their home. thats when their german shepherd slid into a hole on the lake. duerr's husband quickly reacted and grabbed a ladder for his dog to latch onto -- thigh deep in the freezing water. naomi called 9-11. herb said when his legs went numb, he got out of the water. fire officials say he got out at the right time. trt: 14 battalion chief mark winkelman, reno fire department, "if there is

out in court right now. a massachusetts teenager charged with taunting her boyfriend to commit suicide. michelle carter could face trial for manslaughter. abc's linzie janis is here with the story script: this morning?massachusetts teenager michelle carter is one step closer to standing trial for allegedly convincing her 18 year old boyfriend -to commit suicide. prosecutors arguing carter - now 18 - drove conrad roy to kill himself?encouraging him in dozens of text messages ? sot maryclare flynn, prosecutor "he goes back, when are you gonna do it.. stop ignoring the question. question mark, question mark, question mark. you can't keep pushing it off." roy died of carbon monoxide poisoning in july 2014 after locking himself inside his truck in this k-mart parking lot? at the time prosecutors say he was on the phone with carter for 47 minutes?at one point telling her he was getting out of the truck because he feared it wasn't

flynn, prosecutor "the car was filling up and he was scared. she told him to get back in the car." and just days before- in another text message- carter writing "don't be scared?you're finally to be happy in heaven." sot - claudette roy-viaol - roy's great aunt it's inconceivable. i just don't understand how someone could do that. to encourage someone they claimed to love. according to court documents, roy had attempted suicide and had been hospitalized before he had even met carter.. and in one text message two weeks before his suicide, expressed his desire to take his own life-- "i can't get better, i already made my decision." the defense now trying for a second time to have the involuntary manslaughter charge dropped. joseph cataldo - defense attorney - "he has in fact brainwashed her to the point where she's now accepting his idea of this is my only option." in statement to abc news, the defense says "michelle's communications were by no means threatening" and that roy "?made his own conscious decision to take his own life." adding "this is a

two people were killed and 18 others injured in a greyhound bus crash in san jose, california. authorities say the bus overturned and landed on a median along highway-101. traffic was backed up for several miles as emergency crews cleared the scene. no word on what caused the crash. there were no other vehicles involved. some new developments in the gas leak in southern california. utility company--"so- cal-gas"-- says it expects to have the leak sealed by late next month, if not sooner. officials say work on a relief well is ahead of schedule. methane gas has been spewing into the atmosphere from the leak since october of last year. today's hearing for the so-called affluenza teen had to be rescheduled. ethan couch's case went before the tarrant county juvenile court this morning. in 2013... a sixtten-year- old couch killed four people in a drunk driving crash. a judge gave him probation... but investigators say couch skipped town to mexico when video surfaced of him around alcohol... which violates his

prosecutors were hoping to move the case to adult court today... but the judge ruled the hearing could not proceed because couch's parents were not officially notified. mothers against drunk driving also wants his case moved. they have collected more than 60-thousand signatures... calling for the change. "we're working with the victims in this particular case. of course they were very upset about the original sentencing. we're here to help them. support the criminal justice system to see that he is held accountable. he killed four people and was never held accountable for that. we're trying to sure that that doesn't happened again. we want to make sure he doesn't have an opportunity to create any more victims." if a judge agrees to transfer the case to adult court... couch's probation could extend beyond his 19th birthday in april. he could also be ordered to spend 120 days in state jail before starting his next probated sentence. there is no word yet on when the hearing will be held... but prosecutors say it's crucial it happens before couch's birthday. as of now... he remains

you probably know about toll-free phone calls. now verizon is using the concept for data. verizon announced a new "freebee data" service this morning. it will allow third-party companies to pick up the tab for your data usage when you download content from their apps, websites and services. verizon believes the service gives companies a powerful way to market to mobile devices... while saving customer's data charges. it will try out the service next week... using companies like hearst magazines, gameday and verizon- owned a-o-l. the social media service "whatsapp" is dropping it's annual subscription fee. founder jan koum said the move is intended to remove barriers for the service. while addressing a conference in germany, koum noted that not everyone has access to a credit card. so far, whatsapp has been free for the first year of use and then 99-cents-per-year after that.

looking to keep your resolution to lose weight or quit smoking? the key to success may be living with you! a new study suggests a spouse or partner sharing your goals increases your chances of success. martha shade explains --reporter pkg-as follows-- want to double your chances of success in making a positive lifestyle change? just add a loved one! researchers at university college london found that couples who adopted a new and positive health behavior were more successful than those doing it on their own. for the study researchers followed nearly 4thousand married and cohabitating couples and studied their unhealthy habits in three areas: smoking obesity and physical activity. here's what they found... 48 percent of men were

"don't interrupt me!" but studies show one thing that can make you toss and turn -- your cell phone. exposure to a smart phone's blue glow in the dark can affect your circadian rhythm. to help you snooze through the night -- apple is adding a new mode to the iphone. it's called night shift. and it will be in the next i-o-s update. essentially -- night shift changes the screen from a blue light to a warmer setting -- that's easier on the eyes. it also figures out your location and turns on automatically at night. while it doesn't guarantee a good night's sleep apple says when it

i'm mary moloney. apple released the upgrade to developers to test out. but the company has not announced when it will be available for your iphone and ipad. speakign of sleep.. results of a short-term study suggest catching up on your sleep over a weekend can reduce the risk of developing diabetes. the university of chicago used 19 healthy young men eating a controlled diet in their study. the study found getting fewer than five hours of sleep on four consecutive nights hiked their diabetes risk 16-percent. but after sleeping more than nine-hours for two consecutive nights, that risk returned to normal levels. chronically sleep- deprived people are more likely to develop other health problems such as weight gain and high blood pressure. they also tend to be less alert and have difficulty concentrating, reasoning and solving problems. the impact of extra weekend sleep on these health issues remains to
