paris attacks. the attackers all europeans who travel to the u.s. without a visa under the old visa waiver. former pilot has been arrested for flying a plane while drunk. he has been released on bail and ordered back to court next month. according to court documents, he was randomly tested for drugs and alcohol when he landed in orange county. conviction on this charge could mean 15 years behind bars. federal officials say a record number of airline passengers were caught last year trying to take guns on planes. most of the weapons were loaded. the tsa says more than 2,600 firearms were found in carry-on bags. that's a 20% increase over the previous year. dallas airport discovered 123 guns discovered there. >> wow. and here's something every beginning musician's parents can relate to, the first recital. music to their ears, right? this boy brings something

preparations of the blizzard 2016. washington, d.c., mayor, promises the city will do a better job of snow removal and keeping the roads open than they did the other night. >> they're saying this because this was the scene with only 1 1/2 inches of snow. this the suburb of d.c. there. it was a mess all around the dmv. more than a foot of snow is expected today. >> schools in washington and suburbs will be closed today. most area schools expect student to log in and keep up with their studies. federal offices close at noon and metro system won't operate saturday and sunday. i can't remember the last time they did that. >> it's been a while. as you can see from the radar, there are some strong storms coming into the entire eastern half of the country. there are tornado watches along the gulf coast and a mix of precipitation moving north. >> we're talking tens of millions of americans keeping an eye on the weather. with more, here's abc's david

>> reporter: with a major storm bearing down and early tests failed. smashing, turning the nation's capital into a nightmare. pedestrians, too. highways became parking lots. sitting in his car, will lee powerless as another vehicle comes sliding and slamming into him. not once, but twice. but now up to 2 feet of snow and blinding winds are hours away. that first snow was no surprise. it was forecasted, but local governments didn't treat many of the roads. our local station got stuck. >> there's actually kind of a sheen of ice down here. that's the problem. so, vehicles probably didn't realize that and there's just crashes all over the place. >> reporter: slick roads and not enough snow crews working, leading to an embarrassed mayor. >> we are very sorry for inadequate response. >> reporter: not reassuring with this even bigger blast, a

the mid-atlantic. expected to paralyze the region. which is why salt trucks were being loaded a full day before the big storm. and it's not just snow. the chief meteorologist at our station wpvi in philadelphia says this could be the biggest storm since sandy. >> for the delaware beaches, this will be the biggest test since hurricane sandy. creating major coastal flooding. inland, blizzard, near whiteout conditions. >> reporter: in belmar, new jersey, heavy equipment moving sand, creating a barrier to the coastal surge. >> anybody need cell phones? >> reporter: the rush is on at hardware stores. lines for shovels. >> that's eight. >> reporter: lines for water and food at stores. the warning is out. this storm could be a monster.

washington. >> how much of a monster will this storm be? >> accuweather's justin povick is on the line with the answer to the forecast. how is it looking? >> good morning. this is already a monster. as you can see on the radar, some very, very dangerous thunderstorms crossing through far northwestern. the 73-mile-an-hour wind gusts most recently reported in pensacola. as we shift north and eastbound we're getting reports of sleet, also mixing with ice toward charlotte. it's just a matter of time before we start to see the big impacts around d.c. we expect those later on this afternoon. significant snowfall amounts. we're talking storm total amounts of 1 to even 2 feet of snow. but then we have to talk about the impacts at the coastline. again, 20-foot waves. a serious storm surge. this will rival the impacts felt from sandy. have you to think about the precipitation and the wind. again, this system covering a lot of real estate. >> accuweather's justin povick with the forecast. we appreciate it.

i have to do some shopping. a lot of people are prepared. many of the shelves are empty. we'll have images later on. but in the nation's capital, of course, already reeling from wednesday night's mild snowstorm. now it is getting ready. the city government there promising to do a better job at clearing the streets but schools, well, they're out today in washington and some of its suburbs as well. the metro system, it's not going to run this entire weekend. federal offices will close today at noon. >> here in new york city, they are ready to keep the big apple, 6,000 miles of roads open during the storm. the sanitation department already placing plows and salt spreaders around the city. new york city schools are open. the storm not expected until tomorrow morning.

people are getting hurt. in north carolina, several ambulances responded to this accident on a slippery highway that put at least one driver in the hospital. on the way home in the light snow wednesday night, two drivers died in crashes. and police don't think either of them were speeding. >> awful. almost wrecked. >> reporter: parents in one county still furious that schools weren't closed after a school bus filled with student nearly slid into a river. everyone is okay. >> it just kind of started going sideways down the hill. >> i kind of screamed a little bit. my heart was a little in my knees, in my feet. >> reporter: the storms are already forcing airlines to scramble. 945 flights are canceled today. that number could grow to 2,000. 200,000 passengers will have to figure it out. most of the major airlines are showing sympathy for passengers. delta are allowing passengers to change their tickets for free and offering refunds for cancellations or flights that are delayed. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. >> you rarely see airlines doing that when weather is the reason
