looking into an unusual crash and car theft in an industrial part of town... plus... what happens if you just abandon a pet in a park without going through the proper channels? we look intoi that. thanks for joining us on kolo 8 news now midday. i'm matt vaughan in for dave lawrence. we begin with breaking news regarding nevada and the u-s supreme court... a rumored nominee to replace justice antonin scalia was nevada governor brian sandoval, who was even being vetted by the white house. today, sandoval said he does not want to be considered at this time for the nomination. he says he's very humbled to be considered and is incredibly grateful to have been mentioned. this comes after republicans on the senate judiciary committee wrote a letter.. vowing to forgo any hearings on the white house's selection. mcconnell said president obama.. should leave the next supreme court selection.. to the next president. "presidents have a right to nominate, just as the senate has its constitutional right to provide or withhold consent. in this case, the senate will

"i think it will be very difficult for mr. mcconnell to explain how if the public concludes that this person is very well qualified that the senate should stand in the way simply for political reasons." senate minority leader.. harry reid of nevada said he met with sandoval, and thinks he would make a good supreme court justice. reid also has officially endorsed hillary clinton for the presidency. "she's a person who is a very quick learner, all you need to do is look at what happened after 9/11. she did a good job. she fought for new york like i've never seen anyone fight for anything." reid's announcement comes after clinton's victory.. in saturday's nevada caucuses. this could give clinton a boost.. heading into next week's "super tuesday"... when democrats will vote in 11 states. ### now to an update on the future of wildcreek golf course... which could be determined today.

a hospital and is recovering from what police say are non-life- threatening injuries. police say the attackers could be driving an older white two-door car... with a black stripe down the driver's side door. and they might be connected to other local burglaries. "just due to circumstances that will come out later, we do believe they are armed and dangerous so we ask the community that if you do see this vehicle, contact the authorities. don't approach it and let's keep our community safe. " the attackers are described as hispanic or light skinned black men. one is six feet tall, with a thin build. the other is described as five foot eight inches tall, with a heavy build his forearms. if you have any information-- call reno witness. ### in sparks, police are looking for the people involved in the reported theft of an s-u-v. police tell us it was reported yesterday afternoon around 4:30 at the intersection of greg street and spice island drive after a minor crash. a woman told police that her vehicle was hit

1990's chevy or g-m-c s- u-v. she says when she went to check out the damage, a man jumped into the drivers seat of her s-u-v ... demanded money, then drove off. the other driver also drove off. police say the man is described as white with a bald or shaved head in his 30's they say he has a tattoo on the left side of his head, near his ear -- and full sleeves of tattoos on his arms. the woman in the s-u-v that hit the victim is white and in her 30s with blonde hair. the stolen vehicle is described as a grey 2000 g-m-c yukon with a u-n-r sticker in the rear window. if you have any information about this theft call the sparks police department or secret witness at 322- 4900. the washoe county sheriff's office is reporting a string of recent vehicle burglaries. and they say they're easy to avoid if just remember to lock your car. deputies say unlocked cars in sun valley played a role in some of these recent burglaries. they say thats how 18- year-old ryan brogan and a girl broke into at least four cars ,and they believe there are more victims. deputies say they rely on residents to report

"in this instance, we really need to thank the public for alerting us to something suspicious in their neighborhood. no matter how small it may have been, something didn't look right to this person and they let us know." mccaskill says you should also never leave valuables in your car, so burglars will be less likely to target you. abandoned pets are becoming more common in northern nevada. many.. are left to fend for themselves. two dogs were found abandoned.. at the hidden valley dog park this week.. with a basket of food and blankets. while animal control was able to take them in... and contact the owner... it is illegal to abandon an animal. you can face fines up to 400-dollars.. or even jail time. but.. resources are available to help you handle it properly. if they do have to relinquish their pets to the humane society, we do do it by appointments just so we can get as much information about the pet as possible and also give the person going through this difficult situation, the time they deserve to get one on one

at the nevada humane society... there's a 25- dollar charge... to surrender an animal.. but they are willing to work with people.. who have financial troubles. ### the reno city council is delaying its decision to lease an area... next to the west street plaza. the siegel group presented its plan.. for the redevelopment of the truckee lane building... which is next to west street plaza and fulton park. this is a rendering of the proposed plan. during yesterday's council meeting... two downtown advocacy groups... voiced concerns, about leasing the building to the siegel group. they say it has a bad track record in sparks and las vegas... because of crime associated with some of its properties. the siegel group says it's working with police... to improve its properties. ### for the second year in a row... nevada's bridges have been named the best in the nation. only about 2-percent of nevada's roughly 19- hundred public bridges need repair. compare that to the national average... which is nearly ten percent. the nevada department of transportation, inspects all bridges in the state of nevada. they're inspected every two years. the survey was done by the american road and

states up and down the east coast. he opened the front door and he says momma tornado, tornado, and he ran and i ran. two days of storms -- over 50 tornados reported -- 7 killed -- and hundreds of thousands now without power in the last 48 hours. in virginia, a state of emergency declared. tornadoes leaving dozens injured - several critically - and four dead. this is tragic man, i never seen nothing like this before. three people in a mobile home killed - including a two-year-old boy. powerful winds lifting their trailer almost 300 yards and slamming it into a church. "our prayers goes out to the family that lost their lives. we just thank god that despite the damage the church is still standing. we are going to recover." cars crumpled like aluminum cans on the highway. the cars were tossed about. i'm just so sorry that people were killed. the tornado tearing down power lines and

trapping some residents in the wreckage. the glass started caving in on me. i didn't know what to do, it was scary. three more tornados touching down in the sunshine state, packing ferocious winds. in north carolina, five tornados causing a path of mass destruction. four people were inside this home when heavy rains and winds sent a massive tree toppling onto the roof. the residents, miraculously emerging safely. our heart just goes out to anybody that's lost their homes or their loved ones or anything in this. dozens of tornadoes have been reported across the country since tuesday. some analysts predict the drone business... could be an 80-billion dollar industry by 20-25. to help students learn the basics of the drone industry, truckee meadows community college has moved its drone courses into a new lab at the applied technology center on edison way. students learn drone ethics... how to fix them

"there are fewer than 14 hospitals left in the u.s. with a mcdonald's, and two of them are right here in houston."
