like c-peven oxygen-- may put money in state coffers. but, patients and dealers of those devices, are calling foul. kolo 8 news now terri russell has been looking into this story today, and shows us efforts to stop the tax. nevada's department of taxation notified medical device dealers and others about the tax last may. it went into effect last month. devices like c-pap machines or oxygen tanks are commonplace in some households. often patients leave the

a medical device to help them throughout the home. that's where occupational therapist leslie sargent comes into play visitng the home to make sure the patient is safe leslie sargent/occupational therapist: when i was working in home health, a lot of them couldn't afford the equiptment at that time. such practices, sargent believes are only going to become more common in nevada after a medical devices tax went into effect last month. essentially a sales tax patients are now being taxed devices that can be used on a new born, all the way to a hospice patient. doug bennett/bennett medical services: who may need oxygen, a wheelchair, a hospital. bed. they have and average, according to our estimate, 11 days of life. left, and that is all taxed, bennett says his company along with 35 others statewide is circulating a petition to have voters decide on the medical devices tax this november. he says they are already half way through getting the required signatures they need to get the measure on the ballot. so

test results-- of inflation quality, and safety, were manipulated. the exploding airbags, have resulted in one of the largest safety recalls in u-s history. ### environmentalists are suing the federal government to force them to impose stronger restrictions on sage grouse habitat. those restrictions could have wideranging impacts on oil and gas drilling... and grazing across eleven states, including nevada. the lawsuit claims the government's conservation effort has tons of loopholes and won't protect the bird from extinction. but mining companies, ranchers and officials in utah, idaho and nevada say the administration's actions will impede economic development. the rules are part of an expensive effort to keep the sage grouse off the endangered species list. the southern california gas company leak, is now being reported as the largest methane release in u-s history. more than 100-thousand tons of methane was released in los angeles county, in just 16 weeks. that's equivelant to the

the release was measured-- by flying a plane through the methane fumes, on 13 flights, over the san fernando valley. ### a washoe county school district police k-9 has died. "amis" was born in the czech republic and trained in texas before starting his official duties in washoe county. he worked and lived with... officer mark szabo. amis specialized in drug detection on campuses. he died of natural causes. amis was ten years old. a former guard is accused of smuggling cellphones and drugs into a southern nevada prison. 41-year-old michael james was arrested last month on suspicion of bribery, and potentially supplying a phone to a prisoner. he's no longer employed as a guard, and his bail is set at 11- thousand dollars. ### a california lawmaker wants to put an end to daylight saving time in the state. the sacramento bee reports assemblyman kansen chu believes the one-hour difference does more harm than good.

says the time change correlates with an increase in workplace accidents and greater energy usage. if the bill passes, california would join arizona and hawaii.. in opting out of resetting their clocks. a traumatic injury... especially one received during service in the military... can drastically restrict someone's ability to be physically active. but this week... a group of vets are learning their disabilities don't define them... and they can do anything they set their mind to. kolo 8 news now's colin lygren reports from tahoe. nats right now... virginia city's jim kempner is getting ready for his first run of the day. "i used to ski when i was younger up in tahoe, when i was in my late 20s, early 30s." but back then... skiing was a lot different. back then... jim... could stand up. "you do a few things different, but you are still skiing down the hill." nats - monoski reverse. today.. jim will be in what's called a monoski.

after a workout routine. but the advantages go far beyond that. mary maloney explains in tonight's medical minute. flexibility is important at any age. and one of the bests way to improve your joint range of motion is by stretching - and doing so regularly. experts from the mayo clinic say adults should do flexibility exercises

times a week.. and can do so at home, the gym or even at work. some tips to consider while trying to improve your flexibility.. focus on major muscle groups.. when you're stretching.. focus on your calves, thighs, hips, lower back, neck and shoulders. and make sure that you stretch both sides. hold your stretch.. try to hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds .. and remember to breathe normally. don't aim for pain.. you should expect to feel some tension but not pain. if the position you're in hurts, ease off until it no longer feels painful. bring movement into your stretching... the gentle flow in yoga or tai chi can help you be more flexible in specific movements. experts warn to always use proper technique. stretching incorrectly can actually do more harm than good. i'm mary moloney.

reno's minor league soccer team -- has a name... reno 1868 f-c...chosen by fans in a popular vote.. it beat out the other two finalists... reno united and reno fc.. the "1868" honors the date that the city of reno was founded... it is the only soccer club in north america to have a date as part of their name... it's a common practice in europe... edelstein: "it's awesome to have a name. it's awesome to have an identity, especially because that identity was chosen by the community. you know popular vote. someone asked me who chose the name, and i said you did. the community chose the name. and so we get to go forward building this club the way that northern nevada wants to see it." this is just the first step... the team next will have to decide on their colors, then build the crest that will appear on their jerseys...

soccer league, a top minor league affiliate of the mls. the division one state tournament began today... four semifinal games... each one of them involving a local team ben ross is standing by live over at lawlor events center... ben, a huge test for the reno girls tonight. josh, that's probably an understatement. the huskies taking on the centennial bulldogs, ranked number 5 in the nation. the bulldogs 29-1 on the season -- and they actually beat reno earlier this year 91-56. so the huskies trying to pull off a monumental upset let's get to the highlights... reno hanging around early... mallory mcgwire -- follows her own miss and puts it back. led the huskies with 14 points. then it's dominique harding -- down the lane -- look at that shot. she finished with 12 points. just before halftime -- huskies heat up from the outside. mikayla shults for 3. then it's defense leading to offense -- mcgwire with the swat.

the omaha, nebraska zoo. take a look at this rockhopper penguin chick. for now, the chick staying in a playpen in the penguin exhibit. zoo officials say it will give the chick the chance to become familiar with the other penguins and allow its feathers to fully grow. since hatching in december the chick has grown to about four and a half pounds.
