news from southwest reno.. reno police say the street lights are out at the intersection of plumb and arlington because a mini-van reportedly hit the electrical box. northbound arlington from plumb is also closed. no word when the lights will be turned back on. the crash is still under investigation but police believe the driver may have fallen a sleep. stay with kolo 8 news now for any updates. let's go to lindsey matherly with a look at the forecast. temperatures across northeast california and western nevada will be well above average today before easing down slightly over the weekend. it will be breezy this afternoon and evening, with a chance for showers mainly north of interstate 80 tonight and early saturday. another weak system is possible sunday night, with one person is dead and two others injured after an officer

silver springs. according to lyon county sheriff al mcneil... one of those injured was a lyon county deputy... he was shot in the hand... the injury is non life threatening. the sheriff tells us the incident started as a report of a stolen vehicle in sparks around 9:30 last night. a short time later around 10 p.m.... the sheriff says a lyon county deputy spotted the stolen vehicle.. a red chevy cruze.. in the parking lot of the silver springs nugget. as the officer approached the vehicle ... someone in the car shot at him ... at which time the officer returned fire. sheriff mcneil says that suspect was killed. a second person in the vehicle was also shot. they were flown to the hospital... the extent of their injuries is not known. the deputy involved in the shooting was also taken to a hospital for the injury to his hand. two other people ran from scene but were later arrested. names of the 4 suspects and the deputy involved have not been released. and-- we're following a developing story out of kansas. several are dead following a deadly shooting spree in kansas. the suspected shooter was killed at the lawn mower equipment maker where he worked, but

several lives and injuring many others. abc's clayton sandell has the latest. script: police say 38-year old cedric ford started his rampage shooting at random drivers? wounding two? before heading to excel industries in hesston kansas where he worked. sot - sheriff / or short nats to have something like this is tragic ford heads inside? armed with a rifle and handgun? and opens fire on his co-workers. sot - eyewitness sot and then i seen a mob of people just start running out saying run, run and pop pop pop pop pop? was all i heard and then everybody started scattering out of the building and i didn't know what happened until i got outside and seeing wounded people coming out. police and witnesses say ford kept shooting until a single officer? the first to arrive? fires back. sot - sheriff there was a particular law enforcment here in heston that responded right away and even though he took fire he went inside that place and saved multiple, multiple lives. a hero as far as im concerned. in the end? four employees,

connection with the murder of a man in south lake tahoe last month. investigators from the el dorado county d-a's office were in solano county, california yesterday searching for 24-year-old domenic sean-lee randolph and 26-year-old dion jermaine randolph vaccaro. they believe those two men were involved in the murder of dennis wright on january 30th at the beverly lodge. they are considered armed and dangerous. last week.. 18-year-old tristan batten and 20- year-old harvest davidson were arrested... for their alleged involvement in the murder. ### a jury in yerington is deciding the fate of a silver springs man... accused of killing his girlfriend's son. cody wallace is charged with the death of 2- year-old... thomas o'connell the fourth.. back in november of 2010. he was watching the boy.. while his mother was at work. the silver springs man... says the boy fell and hit his head. but.. prosecutors say this can't be true... and the boys injuries prove this point. here is a portion of the closing statements... first from wallace's defense attorney ... then from the

"we don't have to prove that the injuries were accidental. the district attorney's office must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they were intentional." "these injuries could not happen from one or two or three falls from a chair. they couldn't be that wide spread. it doesn't make sense you fall once." the jury is talking about the evidence. no word... on how long it'll take to reach a decision. ### one horse was killed and another had to be euthanized after being hit by cars in the virginia range area. as kolo 8 news nows chris buckley reports the nevada department of agriculture wants to remind drivers to be careful.. especially after dark. sightings of wild horses near roads in the virginia range area are common... "we have 2000 heads of horses that live out here on these ranges we have issues from 95 to 395, 50 to i-80 so when you're in those areas you need to be cautious."

two horses were hit on highway 50 east of dayton early thursday morning... between mark twain avenue and rainbow drive. the horse hit by this car came through the windshield and was killed on impact. "hitting a horse is very much like hitting an eld you need to beweare of it becuause in a car you're normally going to take out the legs and they're going to come through the windshield." the driver was transported with minor injuries. the other horse was the victim of a hit and run... that driver took off... and the injured horse was euthanized. the highway patrol is taking the lead on that case... officials say if you do hit an animal, you shouldn't leave the scene. "you should pull over and treat it like any other accident allow there to be a report and do it the way it should be done." the department of agriculture says this area has had horse problems for the last two decades "its not completely fenced so we can't always monitor those horses, they have access to both sides of the road." and while they're

continue fencing along this stretch of highway 50, that's still a ways down the road. that's why they're reminding drivers to slow down and keep an eye out. and early saturday. another weak system is possible sunday night, with additional fast-moving systems for mid to late next week. overnight hours. by now you've probably heard.. drinking sugary beverages are bad for you. almost one third of americans drink at least one sugary drink a day... but a new study suggests that statistic could be changing. here's doctor timothy johnson soda? fruit juice? sweet tea? and energy drinks. when it comes to refreshment, sugary drinks are a popular choice. but all those calories from sugar pose real health hazards? not the least of which is a higher risk for obesity, diabetes and heart disease. now, new data from the cdc show that the trend may be going down. in a 2013 survey, 1 in 3 americans reported drinking at least one sugar-containing drink per day. if true, a sign of a positive trend? since previous research
