preparation... roadwork will be underway soon on a major widening project at mccarran and pyramid in sparks. thanks for joining us on kolo 8 news now midday. i'm rebecca kitchen in for dave lawrence. we start with the latest on an officer- involved shooting in silver springs... one person is dead and two others hurt. according to lyon county sheriff al mcneil... one of those injured was a lyon county deputy... he was shot in the hand... the injury is not life- threatening. the sheriff tells us the incident started with a report of a stolen vehicle in sparks around 9:30 last night. the sheriff says a lyon county deputy spotted the stolen vehicle.. a red chevy cruze.. a short time after in the parking lot of the silver springs nugget. as the officer approached the vehicle ... someone in the car shot at him ... and the officer returned fire. sheriff mcneil says that suspect was killed. a second person in the vehicle was also shot and flown to a hospital. the extent of the injuries is not known. two other people ran from scene but were later arrested.

have not been released. a jury in yerington is deciding the fate of a silver springs man... accused of killing his girlfriend's son. cody wallace is charged with the death of 2-year-old thomas o'connell the fourth.. back in november of 2010. he was watching the boy, while his mother was at work. wallace says the boy fell and hit his head. but.. prosecutors say this can't be true... and the boy's injuries prove this point. here is a portion of the closing statements... first from wallace's defense attorney ... then from the prosecutor. "we don't have to prove that the injuries were accidental. the district attorney's office must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they were intentional." "these injuries could not happen from one or two or three falls from a chair. they couldn't be that wide spread. it doesn't make sense you fall once."

we'll let you know when a decision is reached. a manhunt is underway... in the bay area... for two suspects wanted in connection with the murder of a man in south lake tahoe last month. investigators from the el dorado county d-a's office were in solano county, california yesterday searching for 24-year-old domenic sean-lee randolph and 26-year-old dion jermaine randolph vaccaro. they believe those two men were involved in the murder of dennis wright on january 30th at the beverly lodge. they are considered armed and dangerous. last week.. 18-year-old tristan batten and 20- year-old harvest davidson were arrested... for their alleged involvement in the murder. ### two horses were hit on highway 50 -- east of dayton -- early yesterday morning. the horses were reportedly hit within a few hundred yards of each other. one was killed on impact, the other was injured and had to be euthanized. as for the drivers, police say one was taken to a hospital with minor injuries -- the other drove off after hitting the horse.

if you do hit an animal, you should never leave. the department of agriculture says this stretch of highway has had horse problems for the last two decades. vehicle ... one person, shot in the shoulder. another reportedly shot in the leg .. minutes later, ford allegedly entered excel industries... where he worked and had clocked in earlier that morning... proceeding to unload a long gun on the almost 150 people in the building at the time. authorities saying victims were randomly targeted... "we heard a pop pop, doors opened people started screaming. "he was just unloading on everybody. and i told the girls that were working on my line, 'let's go, let's run." police arriving on the scene minutes after the gunman opened fire... the first officer on scene single-handedly taking down the shooter. witnesses to the gruesome bloodbath .... in shock .. "never in a million years something that you'd imagine would happen." those who knew the shooter .... grasping for answers. "i wouldn't think he would of

he's a real nice guy." that's rosa flores reporting. ford had an extensive criminal record-- including arrests for burglary and battery. less than two hours before his rampage, deputies served ford with a protection order at work. a road construction project at the intersecton of pyramid and mccarran is about to get underway. the regional transportation commission says they'll begin construction in april. they say it took a few years to finish preparing for the project because r-t-c had to acquire, then demolish properties that will be paved over for the changes and improvements. they say it will take more than a year to complete that phase of the plan. "the project, we expect once we get started out here will be about 20 months in duration. that's not to say that there will be traffic controls the entire time. some time crews will be doing some off road work. " joe harrington with r- t-c says the project will alleviate some of the

construction there will be traffic controls. to know more about the traffic controls go to kolo tv dot com. the reno-sparks convention and visitors authority.. is looking for a new owner for the wildcreek golf course. the r-s-c-v-a says it's been losing 150 to 200- thousand dollars a year.. operating the course. and... the course's value as an attraction for visitors.. has declined. so yesterday... the authority's board weighed its options... for now... they've rejected the idea.. ... of selling the land for development... instead deciding to try to find a new owner. the decision pleased wild-creek's neighbors... who were afraid of a loss in property values. lucey: "i'm pleased with the outcome. i think our board did a great job of giving direction not only to our staff and how we're going to move forward. and they really heard from citizens today and made sure that was reflected in the direction that we take before us." the r-s-c-v-a will reportedly approach the county... about the possibility of taking the

that he is just one vote the other commissioners will feel about the idea. in the meantime, the convention authority says it'll continue to maintain, and operate the course. #### traffic is moving again after a crash early this morning at a reno intersection. reno police say the street lights were out at the intersection of plumb and arlington for much of the morning because the driver of a box there. the crash is still under investigation but police believe the driver may have fallen a sleep. he was not badly hurt. the nevada humane society is looking for your help for donner the puppy. donner is a two-month old puppy that needs surgery because he was born with a defect that could be fatal. he has to travel to u-c davis for the surgery. his condition involves a blood vessel that should have shrunk after birth, but it didn't, and now it's constricting the esophagus, making it hard for him to keep food down. if you would like to help, contact the

in longley lane. a reminder... the funeral for nevada senator debbie smith will be at sparks high school this sunday at noon. smith died last sunday from brain cancer. her family asks that instead of flowers, donations are made in her name to the doctor marnie rose foundation, which supports brain tumor research. we're told there will be lots of parking in the lot behind the school, and child care for children who are diaper-trained will be available at the school. also... if you want to wear a color in honor of smith, you're asked to wear gray, which is the color representing brain cancer. she began treatment for a malignant brain tumor a year ago. the democrat was was first elected to the state assembly in 2000 and won a seat in the senate in 2012. she was 60 years old. you may think that if you can't walk, you probably can't ski. but this will be a busy weekend of skiing for a group of veterans who are disabled... but can

it's a special week for disabled veterans at lake tahoe. they're being treated to a week of skiing... even though many of them can't walk. the adaptive sports program "achieve tahoe" is helping vets learn new ways to participate in winter sports. yesterday... despite a loss of limbs... paralyzation... or p-t-s- d... these vets gave it their all... and had impressive results. "you get to learn everything brand new over again on how do it and it is just a new way of looking at life. to me it has been not really a set back, but when i broke my back, after i found out all the things we can do, you know i look forward to the next thing i get to go out and try to do." achieve tahoe is a non- profit program based out of alpine meadows. it offers specialized lessons-- to anyone with a disability... not just vets. it's a way to give back to those who have served.

glancing blow from a progressive, modest upper disturbance will bring an increase in wind later today, a new tax on medical devices has many patients, their care takers and medical device dealers.. angry and exasperated. nevada's department of taxation says devices like c-pap machines.. oxygen tanks.. even monitors on infants can now be taxed. the amount is equal to a sales tax. and there are estimates it could generate up to a million dollars for the state. " doug bennett/bennett medical services: i just know at point.zero zero 4 cents per dollar, this can't possibly have a negative effect on the revenue budget. " bennett says he and 35 other medical devices companies throughout the state are behind a petition to ban the medical devices tax. he says so far they have half of the signatures they need to end up on the november ballot. if you'd like to know more about the petition,

why indeed? probably because i can't speak elvish. but make no mistake, tis a unicorn- and it led police in madera county, california on a quest wednesday. ok, the unicorn is actually a pony name juliette, dressed up as the mythical creature, for use in children's portrait photography. juliette got loose wednesday, and that's when police started getting bizarre calls. "the calls were coming in as a unicorn running around out there on the roadway." a search party was dispatched...no, not them. and after a three hour found safe and sound.... bringing this bizarre incident to a fairy-tale ending. huzzah!!! .....sorry. here is a journey's end.... that was not perfect, but actually pretty incredible! a cargo jet had to make guam with only it's rear you can see the plane gear, and touching down with its nose on only three people were on board at the time,
