shooting spree-- in kansas. police and co-workers say the alleged shooter, has a long arrest record. authorities say, the man who opened fire at the kansas factory where he worked... is 38-year- old cedric larry ford. as many as 300 people were inside-- the excel industries factory... when investigators say ford... armed with an assault rifle and a handgun... began firing. a police officer killed ford during an exchange of gunfire. the sheriff is calling that officer a hero. "the only reason he stopped shooting is because that officer stopped the shooting." ford's shooting rampage is believed to be motivated by a restraining order he was served with... just 90 minutes before the first shooting. court documents reveal... it was ford's ex-girlfriend seeking protection... claiming ford once choked her until she couldn't breathe... adding he was an alcoholic, violent and depressed. turning now to weather and cooler temperatures this

columbia, sc. tmwa estimates it's saving 1-point-3 billion gallons of water-- by recharging ground wells, across the region. this time of year... more water flowing down the river than tmwa can use... so it pulls some of the water out.. treats it... and pumps it underground. the wells are essentially working in reverse-- to recharge the aquifer. "at the wells the we recharge, it tends to stay pooled up around those wells and it is like having a big tank that you can draw from. you are keeping that thank full, then when you want to that well on in the summer time, it is full" tmwa is doing this at 21 different wells across the truckee meadows. when it comes to summer... the process will be reversed-- and water will be pumped out... and delivered to your faucet. if tmwa did not do this... the water would flow downstream to pyramid lake. ### an unusual project

class this morning. it's a human powered, student designed and built interpretation-- of nasa's space rover. it took students in rick shrank's schrank's-- shop class month's to build. it's light weight, pedal powered, and has full independent suspension. today, it was rolling around the school's parking lot. but, in april-- it'll be the school's entry in nasa's human exploration rover challenge-- up against high schools and colleges from around the world. rick schrank, teacher: "when you have a kid who's using tools to build a car from scratch and then go compete with it against other kids from around the world. it just doesn't get better than that." the competition is held at nasa's space camp in huntsville, alabama. this will be virginia city's 5th time in the annual competition. they're the smallest high school entered, but have done well in the past, usually placing around the top 10. ### a lot of work goes into putting on the academy awards. we're getting a look at the final preparations for the oscars. and-- ?do you have your

mcneil tells us... a deputy as shot in the hand in the incident. the sheriff says a vehicle was reported stolen in sparks around 9-30 last night. less than an hour later, that s-u-v was spotted by a lyon county deputy in the parking lot of the silver springs nugget. as the deputy approached the vehicle ... someone in the car shot at him, and the deputy returned fire... killing conti. a juvenile in the vehicle was also shot and flown to the hospital with uknown injuries. two other juveniles ran from scene, but were later arrested. the names of the suspects, and deputy-- have not been released. ### the search for two suspects in a south lake tahoe murder has led investigators to solano county. investigators from the el dorado county d-a's office were in vallejo looking for 24-year-old domenic sean-lee randolph and 26-year- old dion jermaine vaccaro. they believe those two men were involved in the murder of dennis wright at the beverly lodge in january. last week.. 18-year-old tristan batten and 20- year-old harvest
