acres of land... but could also have a severe economic consequence for alaska. the house saw heated debate over protections for the arctic national wildlife refuge. kolo 8 news now washington correspondent kellie meyer reports. this is the first time congress voted on the issue since president obama released a call to action to designate the 10-02 area, or coastal plain, as wilderness. but it's something alaska congressman don young says isn't good for the people he represents. the senior legislator went head to head with california congressman jared huffman working to defeat his amendment to the share act, or the 'sportsmen's heritage and recreational enhancement act'. the share act is a bipartisan package of bills that focuses on protecting recreational hunting, fishing, and shooting. huffman's amendment backs president obama's proposal to designate the refuge as wilderness. congressman young says he is against this plan because of the potential for future energy development. young: "you say well we don't need the oil now. i heard that in 1960. we didn't need the oil but

" young says the house republicans ultimately voting against the bill this morning sends a resounding message that the president's proposal is something they won't support. reporting in washington i'm kellie meyer. just how effective is this season's flu vaccine? according to the centers for disease control and prevention... it's working pretty well. the c-d-c says this season's vaccine cuts the chance of getting the flu by nearly 60- percent. that makes it one of the most effective flu by comparison, last season's flu shot only 20-percent. meantime, the c-d-c says 13 children have died from flu this season. adult deaths are not tracked. the c-d-c also notes that it's still not too you've yet to receive one. northern nevada continues to attract new business. but... one long-standing drawing international attention.

year.... an inspector from the forbes travel guide came to the biggest little city.... and to the atlantis spa.... officials at the casino resort don't know when... and they don't know who. they just know once the inspector left... they had earned a prestigious 4 star rating. it's 100-percent service based... and there were 250 stringent standards the spa must to meet to get the rating. "it really starts as soon as you walk in the door, the service begins. so if you touch 20 staff members and one doesn't give that level of service we fail" of course this gives the spa bragging rights. they are they only one in northern nevada to have the rating. but it also gives reno a boost when it comes to attracting people to the area. the reno sparks convention and visitor's authority says the rating will encourage more people to look at reno as a place to hold business conventions.##

rummage sale has offerred fine goods, at great prices to truckee meadows residents. but what many don't realize, the money generated from the annual sale goes towards local non- profit organizations and nursing scholarships. kolo 8 news now terri russell shows us what this event has meant to one local project. the child assault prevention program, otherwise known as cap has a pretty non descript office on ridge street. inside you'll find rebecca lebeau. rebecca lebeau/children assault prevention project: "we are really small. there is onlly 10 of us in the organization. and we go into every elementary school in washoe county. we do about 500 work shops every year and teach almost 1500 kids." lebeau says the organization applies for grants and other funding. but the alliance with washoe county medical society came at the right time last year. lebeau: "have to say, it was miracle funding. because 2015 was a rough year for non profits. and being little and having a big mandate to so this, we kind of ran out of money."
