our community gathers to say good bye to an important figure. we hear how senator debbie smith, inspired the lives of others. good evening, i'm noah bond. thanks for joining us tonight. thousands of people lost power tonight. it was also cut to our transmitter--- right when the oscars were starting. and that's why many of you could not watch the first portion of the program. kolo 8 news now's catherine van joins us live in the studio... with more details about what happened. about 10-thousand customers in south reno lost power....so those with dish...direct-tv... and over-the-air customers... weren't able to watch. the power outage knocked out our transmitter ... which cut out the over-the air signal...

gathered today... to pay their respects to democratic state senator debbie smith, who lost her battle with brain cancer on february 21st. as kolo 8 news now's paul harris reports--- the memorial filled the sparks high school gym. nats at sparks high school the honor guard lined the entrance and the bagpipes played amazing grace to honor debbie smith... a democratic state senator from district 13 which includes parts of reno and sparks. those who served with her in the legislature spoke about their colleague and friend. naomi duerr, ward 2, "she was a hero to all of us, she was a mentor and inspiration. she encouraged me to run for office." and her colleagues from across the aisle also came to pay respects ben kieckhefer, nevada senator district 16,"her compass always pointed north and i hope that you will try and carry on i will always try to carry on that yours points the same way."

"on friday night we searched until dark, the wind came up

the canoe capsized and we had to pull the boats off the water due to the wind and dangerous water conditions." the search resumed saturday morning... on the water - boats with underwater sonar and remote video capability. in the air, a c-h-p helicopter. "we were able to search from the air when there was little or no wind. with good visibility in the water they spotten an object which later turned out to be one of the canoeists." the two were last seen in the northeast corner of the lake.. that's the area boats and dive teams scoured on sunday. the weather again playing a factor. "as the wind comes up today, definitely the water temperatures and then the depth of the lake. for folks who are divers, diving at 6000 feet, dive times are greatly reduced and certainly being in that cold of water. it's not a recreational free dive, we wear dry suits with specialized equipment." water temperatures here range from 37 to 39 degrees... with depths... up to 300 feet. at donner lake chris buckley kolo 8 news now. neither victim was

"we would like to remind everyone how important personal flotation devices are. these situations are always extremely tragic and we can only hope we can prevent similar incidents in the future." ### with spring break just around the corner, washoe county health officials are offering advice for people who might be traveling to zika infected countries. since february 5th, eight people have been tested for the zika virus in washoe county. none of those cases, tested positive for the virus. the c-d-c and washoe county health district recommend pregnant women to not travel to the infected countries. but if you do, make sure you protect yourself from mosquito bites. they also recommend to use protection, since there have been numerous cases of zika spreading, through

the city of reno will open a new overflow shelter this week. the overflow shelter will house homeless men and women-- when the community assistance center shelters are full. this will be year round, and will house up to 1- hundred people. we don't know where the shelter will be. but city staff is planning on opening it-- sometime this week. ### university of nevada- reno wants to add 4- hundred faculty members by 20-20. u-n-r's president says the resources generated by the university's record enrollment, will fund those positions. almost 21-thousand students enrolled this year. university officials will meet with the nevada system of higher education-- in march to discuss whether to ask the legislature to fund 1-hundred of those jobs. ### with automatic payments, many people have one less thing to worry about. but if you're not careful... it could take more money out of your pocket. here's a kolo 8 sports break -- nascar sprint cup series at atlanta motor speedway... after a caution flag

he filled out an online form and got a confirmation... but it was far from done. i was charged in december, i was charged january first, i was charged february first the last straw. and annual membership fee, three months after the attempted cancellation. it was very frustrating and i didn't know what else to do. a former police officer, teasley combed through the contract to make sure he had met his obligation.. something the better business bureau recommends. what's really important is to know what you've agreed too. more often than not there's going to be some kind of contract, so make sure you've read the contract and know what the cancellation policy is. tim johnston says sales pressure can lead some customers to sign contracts without fully understanding what they've agreed to. he says ask to take a copy of the agreement home before signing. in addition, get to know the company first. how many of us now do a lot of research before we go out and
