now reporting from abc's times square election headquarters, george stephanopoulos. good evening to our viewers in the west. welcome to super tuesday. the biggest night of voting. the most surprising presidential race of our lifetime. a pivotal and dramatic moment for our entire country. the polls have now closed in every state and the results we have show donald trump and hillary clinton in command of this race. donald trump has won six states -- arkansas, alabama, georgia, tennessee, virginia and massachusetts. ted cruz has won texas and oklahoma. marco rubio has won minnesota. on the democratic side -- hillary clinton has won seven states. i'm here with our entire political team to break down what we have learned from the voters tonight. where this race goes next. we have our top political correspondents, experts and analysts from both parties. david muir is at the decision

the big story tonight, by far, something that none of us imagined one year ago, donald trump declaring victory. >> already we have won five major states and it looks like we could win, six, or seven, or eight or nine. it's really been great. i want to congratulate ted on the winning on texas. he worked hard on it. i know how hard he worked, actually. so, i congratulate ted cruz on that win. that was an excellent win. we're going to make america great again, folks. we're going to make it great again. and, you know, i watched hillary's speech and she's talking about wages have been poor, everything's poor -- she's been there for so long -- i mean, if she hasn't straightened it out by now, she's not going to straighten it out in the next four years. it's just going to make it worse and worse. she wants to america whole again. make america great again is

america whole again. >> pretty calm donald trump there. chris christie endorsed him last week. a sweep of that victory. donald trump won in the south. he won in the state of arkansas as we said. he won in the state of alabama. he won in georgia. he won in tennessee. he won in virginia. he won in the north, massachusetts, i'm here with matthew dowd and jon karl and matt, one of things we're seeing tonight with the sweep of this victory, donald trump re-creating the republican party. >> this is an extraordinary development that the establishment of the party was completely taken offguard. they thought he would burn out in the summer, fall in the autoturn. in winter, he would be frozen out. in the spring, he takes the a largest swath of delegates. he'll be in position, when morning comes tomorrow, he'll be very hard to stop to get this nomination. donald trump has redefined what it means to be a republican in a brand-new way.

marco rubio winning in minnesota. so, he stays in. john kasich pretty close in vermont. he's staying. even ben carson is staying. ted cruz won two states -- texas and oklahoma. no one is getting out. >> super tuesday is trump tuesday. his opposition is as divided as it's ever been. all of them -- kasich, rubio and cruz all see a reason to go on. they'll be divided. >> in the meantime, tom llamas, anyone who's taken on donald trump directly, have faced a mix hasn't survived. >> yes. today, we saw vintage trump in that victory lap, right in front of the cameras, there with chris christie, taking questions and cracking jokes. donald trump needs two things --

account and he's winning victory. >> reporter: paula faris was there at the press conferences. any surprises, paula? >> the trump campaign telling us, they're extremely happy with the results. crossover voters who voted for donald trump on super tuesday. donald trump spoke for about 30 minutes at the podium. he talked about jobs and the economy and building that wall and a possible third party run. but what really stood out the fact that he emphasized the state of florida. the significance of that shouldn't be lost on us. this is marco rubio's home state. they vote exactly two weeks from today. this is a winner take all state and as it stands right now, donald trump has a commanding lead over the rest of the pack. although this was a big night for donald trump he clearly has his sites set on the next couple of weeks. >> and belong that, paula faris.

hillary clinton took aim at the signature of donald trump. >> because this country belongs to all of us. not just those at the top. not just to people who look one way, worship one way or even think one way. [ cheers ] america prospers when we all prosper. america is strong when we are all strong. what's been hollowed out. >> we have the beginnings of a general election debate right there between donald trump and hillary clinton. hillary clinton swept the south. she won in the state of alabama. big win, 79.to 18.on the strength of the african-american vote. in tennessee. in texas, latino votes strong for hillary clinton as well. home state of arkansas, lived there for 18 years, bill clinton of course governor of that state and virginia as well a key swing state in the general election. here's the big one for hillary clinton tonight. break through in the northeast, a win in massachusetts. i'm here with cecilia vega, you covered that campaign from the start. this one was the one that mattered the most. >> this is one they were hoping

clearly, they're claiming victory and very happy about this. this is also the state that bernie sanders needed to win. if he couldn't win in massachusetts, where can he win big? that didn't happen for him tonight. the road to super tuesday success for hillary clinton was through the south. she won big among african-american voters. george, i was down in those states talking to voters, so many voters i met had no idea what bernie sanders stood for. his victory, his road to victory is looking narrower and narrower tonight. >> hillary clinton hoping to put it altogether and all away in the state of florida. matt gutman is there tonight with the clinton campaign. >> reporter: a very confident and very energized hillary clinton here tonight, george, and also very energized crowd. the mere mention of donald trump seemed to be the thing that got them going, originally when we heard all the projections coming in, the donald trump projection of the state came in, they

when hillary clinton was mentioned they cheered loudly. of course, everything seems to be looking beyond this particularly primary and toward the florida primaries that take place on march 14th. a banner on the wall said vote early. >> matt gutman thanks very much. more on what the voters were thinking. david muir is at the decision desk right now and republican and democratic voters right now, battling different things. >> take a look at this, a split between republicans and democrats on this question, when asked should the next president come from outside the political establishment. look at that, 50% of republican voters say they want an outsider. only 15% of democratic voters wanted an outside. when we break it down, 63% went to donald trump who wanted an outside outsider as president.

president. 39% of republicans said yes. experience versus outsider status which led to those victories for trump and clinton today. >> david muir, thanks very much. donna, let's start with the democrats right there and hillary clinton. democratic voters wanted a candidate that kashdcarried on barack obama's policy and no question that hillary clinton tonight was able to capture voters throughout the south where black voters make up more than a quarter of the population. she now has momentum going into states that reflect that broad diversity, so this is an advantage for hillary clinton. as you know, bernie sanders will also reach some delegates tonight as well. >> that's right, he's won four states. meanwhile, bill, on the

candidates all year long, democrats like their leader, republicans are not happy with their leaders in washington. donald trump, ted cruz doing well. >> yep, i mean, democrats are happy with their democratic president. republicans are unhappy with the democratic president and decided over the last few years to be very unhappy about republican leaders as well. trump. he's the leader in the race, no question, he'll have attend of the day, about 250 delegates ted cruz and marco rubio, between them, will have won about 320 delegates. hillary clinton is pretty comfortably ahead. this race, there are two possible paths, trump winning or trump not winning and ending up with a brokered or contested convention. everything depends on two weeks from tonight. if he wins florida and ohio, it's probably over.

that after tonight, he's the republican party's best alternative to donald trump. at one point during his remarks he asked the spotters of some of the other candidates to prafrlly to consider him. the crowd's mood this evening was less celeb ra toir, seemed more like a sense of relief. long after cruz left the room, we spoke to three of his supporters. one guy said, we won texas, we were supposed to, won oklahoma. the other guy said i don't see with the math how we go forward. and another guy said, i love ted cruz, i support ted cruz, after tonight, that dog won't hunt. i don't see the clock hanging in there for us. >> that was the victory party. ted cruz was expected to do a lot better in the south.

math the delegate math. here with jon karl. the magic number for republicans, 1237. the number of delegates you need to secure this nomination going into cleveland. >> a big, big night for delegates for donald trump. look at this, 192 delegates for donald trump. 66 for marco rubio. but then if you look at where the race stands overall, you get a sense of the lead that donald trump is building up, 274 delegates to just 149 for ted cruz. again the magic there, 1237 is where they have to get. >> the states switch to winner take all. >> especially florida, marco rubio's home state and ohio, which is of course john kasich's home state. >> which is why, matthew dowd, john kasich and marco rubio are sticking in.

they might be able to block donald trump, get this to a brokered convention. >> the republican party which donald trump is now taking over and changing it into what the way he wants it, they started with plan a, ignore donald trump and he'll go away a. that didn't work. plan b was, find a candidate, beat donald trump and win before you get to the convention. that didn't work. the plan c is prevent donald trump from getting a majority of delegates by the time you get to cleveland and then take the nomination eye way from the plurality victor which is likely donald trump and substitute someone else in and that is fraught with risk. >> donald trump has said from the very beginning if he doesn't think he's being treated fairly by the party, he'll run as an ind e pendent. >> right now, he's holding the

he's using that as an option. he doesn't like the establishment ganging up against him. he doesn't like the other candidates ganging up against him. >> bill kristol, one of the things that we're seeing on the republican side is that threat going both ways. maybe they'll have a conservative run as a third party if donald trump gets the nomination. >> i think they're planning that matthew dowd's plan c is the one hillary clinton is winning a clear majority of the delegates. that's the difference between the parties. right. i think a lot of conservatives, republicans felt they couldn't support donald trump. we could have a third party this fall, i think. >> in the men time, kirsten, an all-out effort in these two next weeks, trying to find a way to stop trump in ohio and florida.

florida as absolutely critical because of the number of delegates at stake there. by march 15th, you're looking at these winner takes all. it may be too little too late. again, we have only just begun to see folks on the republican side prosecuting a side that hillary clinton is going to be showing. but at this point with donald trump so far in the lead, if you look at the next few states, poll after poll show donald trump with a big lead. >> earlier this evening, i spoke with the man who's banking all his hopes on the state of florida. senator marco rubio from florida. we talked about his disappointing finish tonight. we're waiting to see what happens in minnesota as well.

virginia in every public poll. he won his home state of texas and the neighboring state of oklahoma. >> he's beating you pretty handily. in his home state of texas, for sure. here 's the bottom line, the map from here on out, it gets better for us. his whole strategy was built on the southern states. we within on the other hand has shown growth. in virginia, we were down 20 points in every poll. we narrowed that to nothing. we feel really good about minnesota. i think looking forward at the map now, the states to come. we'll start racking up some victories. winner take all, we love the way the map shapes up for us. especially if it's a narrower field.

crown jewel of the super tuesday. the most delegates of one state. we also had a terrific victory in oklahoma. we're still waiting on results in other states. but critically what we have seen, couple things happened, number one, with the delegates, we're seeing a sharp separation, unclear exactly where we're going to end up. trump somewhere around 400 delegates. we'll end up around 200 delegates. and everyone else will be below 100 delegates. that separation really allows this race to focus on how do we beat donald trump. i'll tell you a lot of republicans view, if we nominate donald trump it will be a disaster for republicans and a disaster for the country, and what i think we saw tonight and i hope we'll see in the days to come is republicans unifying and coming together, we welcome supporters from other candidates aboard -- we need to build a coalition, a team to ensure that the republican nominee

>> senator -- that's what you're calling for, but marco rubio is staying in the race, john kasich is staying in the race and ben carson is staying in the race. >> well, george, every candidate will have to reflect on where the race is, we'll have to give it prayerful consideration. what is clear, if the race remains divided, donald trump's path to the nomination is much more likely, but if we unify, if it's head to head, our campaign beats donald trump soundly. for everyone concerned about the best interest of the republican party, if donald trump is the nominee, in all likelihood your former boss hillary clinton becomes the president, in all likelihood the republicans lose the senate and we lose the supreme court for a generation. we lose the bill of rights for our kids and our grandkids. so, i hope that republicans instead make the decision, let's come together, let's unite behind the only campaign that's beaten donald trump three times across the country.

nomination, does the republican party break apart? >> well, i don't know if it breaks apart but i don't think donald wins. right now, he has enormous opposition to him. and to be honest, right now, the media is using kid gloves on donald. they're not hitting him with all of the things in his background. i think a lot of folks in the media are rooting for donald trump to be the nominee, the one candidate on the face of the planet that hillary clinton can beat in the general election. and as republicans we're not interested in nominating someone as being a sacrificial lamb and end up with a third term of the obama's presidency. >> senator ted cruz, thank you for joining us. matthew, two schools of thoughts here. if this donald trump versus hillary clinton race happens. easy victory for hillary clinton. because it mobilizes latinos and

others say donald trump scrambles the playbook. he'll do well with white working-class voters, in places like ohio, pennsylvania, wisconsin. >> i think initially we'll see that hillary clinton would be favored in a race like that. but there are a couple of things that we have to keep in mind. first, it's very difficult for hillary clinton to run against and campaign against an unpredictable candidate like donald trump. it's the hardest to run against when someone is unpredictable. the other thing is, hillary clinton has demonstrated in the primaries and demonstrated in the polls is a flawed candidate for a general election, she's disliked by a majority of the country and she's distrusted by a majority of the country. and she has some vulnerabilities. so, i don't think this is a slam-dunk for hillary clinton. i think she's slightly favored going into a general election. but there's no telling what will unfold against an unpredictable
