center. jeff-- ?what kind of wind could we feel tomorrow? the ridge of high pressure along the west coast will flatten and start to weaken this week, as a series of systems moves through the pacific northwest. this will keep breezy conditions and occasional clouds in the forecast, with showers possible north of i-80 wednesday night into thursday. highs will be close to records, with some valley locations warming into the low to mid 70's on wednesday. by late friday, a change to a stormy pattern is looking more and more likely. windy conditions, with sierra rain and snow are all possible by saturday and likely by sunday. plus, more storms are lining up to potentially move into the west coast through most of next week. stay tuned! -jeff wednesday: mostly sunny, with a high near 70. southwest wind 5 to 15 mph. wednesday night: mostly cloudy, with a low around 44. breezy, with a southwest wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. thursday: partly sunny, with a high near 64. southwest wind

is creeping up and washoe county teachers are making sure students stay on track. kolo 8 news now's catherine van joins us live in the studio with how this program is helping students and families prepare. the school district's goal is to get the graduation rate to 90 percent by the year 20- 20. in order to do that... counselors work with struggling seniors starting in the fall.... all the way to graduation day... giving them resources they need to succeed. : monica: it's mostly what you think about and what you want to do. and for monica rodriguez... she wants to graduate in june. monica: i'm going to tmcc next year. she's a senior at north valleys high school. in order to get a

monica: i have to make up the extra classes that i missed from not going to school and work on the classes that i have now. and her counselors make sure she's on top of it. monica: my counselor usually calls me in to check in on me to make sure i pass all my classes. it starts in the fall... with a knock on the door. eric: we targeted about 1000 kids and this particular venue, we're looking at 300. during the school year... the school district holds workshops for students and parents to interact with school counselors to gauge their progress. eric: it gets down to this is that intimate arena where people can ask the questions they need to ask even if they've been told a number of times. it's a supplement to the students' progress... it helps them feel comfortable about where they stand and for parents to feel like their kids aren't getting ignored.

because they may not be able to see because they're working. to see that and have a heart to heart with the kids and their teachers. this gives them an opportunity. here... students like monica can review their transcript... update their parents... and figure out the next step with their counselors. monica: they're the ones that keep pushing and pushing me to go and do these extra class and do the extra work that i need to get done. tonight's workshop was a kick off to a three- night event. the next one is tomorrow at dilworth middle school... followed by pine middle school the day after.. both sessions starting at 5:30 to 7. in the sstudio...cvk8nn. thieves ripped out copper wires and plumbing at an overflow homeless shelter in reno. the theft flooded a homeless shelter at 7-90 sutro street on february 20th... and now-- no one can stay there. between one to two hundred people live on the streets in washoe county. that number could increase because of this vandalism. volunteers of america working with the city of reno... are trying to get a replacement shelter in place. those who use the shelter-- say it can't come soon enough. paul diese, homeless "very important. cause a lot of people they will wander off

something anything can happen. we are not asking for a handout just a hand up." the city of reno says the owner of 7-90 sutro street did not want to make the repairs, to keep the building open. call the police or secret witness at 322- 4900, if you know who took the copper. ### last year--- was the deadliest on the roads since 2007. three things are to blame--- a better economy, lower gas prices and electronic devices. the national safety council says 14-percent more people were killed in motor vehicle accidents last year, compared to 2014. the n-s-c says, in part, it's because there are more people on the roads; for two reasons. one: more people have jobs and are driving to and from. second: lower gas prices have more people driving. ?but the third element? electronic devices. and we aren't just talking cell phones. the devices on dash- boards can also distract drivers. officer tim broadway/reno police department: phones have gotten smaller and

intergrated blue tooth. but we have seen the driving selfie, where someone is, they think it is cool cause they are stuck in traffic and they think its cool to hold up the picture to say how they are feeling on facebook with their selfie, and the next thing you know the rear end the person in front of them, because they weren't paying attention. while the national statistics -are alarmng... here in reno officer broadway says deadly traffic crashes and car- pedestrian incidents have leveled off. still, he says, the advice about using your phone while driving is the same. it's against the law and a text isn't worth someone's life, including your own.### you're one step closer to driving across nevada... in an electric car. today governor brian sandoval was in beatty where he cut the ribbon on the first charging station on the nevada electric highway. the stations-- give drivers a place to recharge their electric vehicles. eventually more charging stations will be added along u-s 95... connecting reno and las vegas. for addtionals stations

hawthorne... and beatty. ### a sparks city councilwoman is hoping to fill the seat left by late senator debbie smith. today, julia ratti announced her candidacy-- for state senate district 13. smith's daughter erin says her family asked ratti to consider running because she cares deeply about the same issues her mother did. smith died on february 20th, after battling a brain tumor. candidates can file for the open seat--- next week. ### reno councilman and vice mayor---- oscar delgado-- announced he is running for re- election. he was first elected to the council in 20-12. delgado says his main focus over the past year has been hashtag neighbor-good #neighborgood... an intiative to improve the quality of life in reno's neighborhoods. ### time to carry some extra tissue with you. more pollen is in the air, making it miserable for some people. expert advice to help stop all that sneezing. it's brain injury awareness week. the reno bighorns are helping to spread the

we've had... spell trouble for allergy sufferers. plants... especially trees... are releasing a lot of pollen. some people are allergic to the tree pollen's we're seeing right now... but other people may not experience symptoms... until grass pollen appears. the allergist we spoke with today says... it's all about which pollens your body identifies as harmful... and in turn... tries to kill. chronic diseases among american kids. but-- ?how can parents teeth healthy? how in tonight's medical nat pop isn't always a pleasant if you're a kid. and while regular check-ups are vital, proper daily care is just as important. oral health experts at the university of alabama say parents should create a foundation for their kids.. and it starts with a balanced diet. cut back on sugary drinks. consuming too many beverages with added sugar can lead to tooth decay -- and high-calorie
