first intelligence briefing. what the staffing shake-up means with just 81 days to go until the election. this good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. several major wildfires are burning out of control this morning in california and putting tens of thousands of homes at risk. the three big fires are the chimney, clayton and the explosive blue cut. the blue cut burned more than 25,000 acres so far after breaking out tuesday morning. the fire is just 4% contained. and 82,000 people have been told to evacuate. tom wade of our los angeles station kcbs reports. >> reporter: good morning. as you can see behind me, there are still many hot spots burning near the town of wrightwood. here is a critical defense line for firefighters. they need to make sure these

the inferno raced on for a second night in san bernardino county. fire crews are paying particular attention to the ski town of wrightwood where flames are inching closer and closer to home. >> hopefully, these guys will take care of it and then we can be safe because we got no place to go. >> reporter: the blue cut fire has already managed to scorch thousands of acres and destroyed countless homes, many in the town of phelan. homeowner ron ramirez was able to return home yesterday to find his dogs safe and his property still standing. >> all of the houses across the street are just ground. everything is burnt to the foundation, so i didn't have much hope for our place, but we were fortunate. >> reporter: despite a mandatory evacuation order in wrightwood, some homeowners have mixed feelings about leaving their properties. >> it's my home. would you leave your home? >> our cars are lined up and ready to go if we have to go. >> reporter: kathy mattingly of cal fire has warned against

>> last summer, we did lose some people. fire behavior changed and they refused to leave and there were lives lost. >> reporter: so far, 82,000 people have been forced to evacuate. firefighters will be working throughout the morning to protect the town of wrightwood which is just a few miles from where i'm standing. tom wait for cbs news, wrightwood, california. brazilian authorities removed two swimmers from their flight back home to question them in an alleged jack conger and gunnar bentz were detained by lochte and feigen and bentz and conger said they were robbed. >> investigators say they found little to support the claim and say some details in the

the judge who ordered their passports seized says the group doesn't appear shaken up in security video obtained by "the daily mail" that was recorded shortly after the alleged robbery. conger and bentz won't be alwed to leave brazil until they answer questions. lochte is already back in the u.s. donald trump is in north carolina today holding a fund-raising rally in charlotte and hillary clinton meets with law enforcement leaders in new york. the democrat dismissed an trump's campaign says it doesn't change the man who is running against her. hena daniels joins us from new york. >> reporter: with trump's second campaign shake-up in just two months, his opponent hillary clinton says voters should not be fooled by the billionaire businessman's latest attempt to revamp his candidacy. donald trump attended his first classified intelligence briefing at the fbi offices in new york wednesday. >> this is something that has to come from the top. >> reporter: he also talked

congressional leaders in trump tower, but trump is shaking up his campaign staff with less than 90 days until the election. stephen bannon, who runs breitbart.com, now joins the campaign at its ceo and kellyanne conway joins as a new campaign manager. paul manafort will remain, but with a diminished role. >> you don't take a top person and push them aside as they did to paul manafort. >> reporter: hillary clinton mocked the shuffle, saying trump will be trump no matter who he has running the campaign. >> he is still the same man who insults gold star families, demeans women, mocks people with disabilities, and thinks he knows more about isis than our generals. there is no new donald trump. this is it. >> reporter: clinton did not talk about her e-mail problems. the fbi has handed over notes from its investigation of her

republicans are dissecting the notes to see if she perjured herself when she testified to before the house select committee on benghazi. clinton maintains she told the truth to congress and the fbi. a new quinnipiac university poll hillary clinton leading donald trump in several battleground states, including colorado, virginia, and ohio. meanwhile, a new poll out from monmouth university showing trump leading clinton in indiana. >> hena the storms and flooding in louisiana are now blamed for at least 13 deaths. more rain is likely today in the rage, while flood alerts continue to stretch across southern louisiana. more than 40,000 homes are damaged and thousands are waking up in shelters this morning. don champion reports from baton rouge. >> reporter: the head of homeland security will tour damage from the historic flood in south louisiana today. the fight to protect downstream

already flooded the baton rouge area has taken to the skies. mississippi national guard helicopters have been dropping massive sandbags to control the flow. in places with new flooding, like the town of moropaw, crews used boats to check on people still in their homes. not far away in the town of sorrento, the mayor estimated about 75% of the land in his town is under water. >> some have inches, feet. my house probably has five feet. >> we found it just like this. >> reporter: in baton rouge, where the water has already receded, homeowners like deidre johnson are starting the cleanup process. she says it's overwhelming. >> i know it's material things and you can always get them back, but it crushes you because you feel like you're violated. >> reporter: for yet another night, curfews were in place in some hard-hit areas. don champion, cbs news, baton rouge, louisiana. for the first time, the

outbreak in haiti. almost six years ago. at least 10,000 patients were killed and hundreds of thousands more were sickened. the u.n. also announced actions needed to respond to the crisis. more than 500 passengers and crew evacuated a burning ship in puerto rico. the caribbean fantasy caught fire about a mile off san juan yesterday. flames broke out in the ship's engine when a hose carrying fuel burst and caught fire. passengers escaped the ship using slides. most were from the dominican republic, including dozens of school-aged athletes heading to competitions in puerto rico. you can see the burning boat at a marina in this drone footage over new york's long island. firefighters arrived to find several boats on fire. neighbors were warned to keep their windows closed due to the burning of fiberglass. three firefighters were hurt, including one who suffered carbon monoxide poisoning. coming up on the "morning news." adele sends her regrets.

spain tomorrow in a rematch of the last two gold medal games. the united states continues to dominate the medal count with 93 total, 30 gold and 32 silver and 31 bronze. "harry potter" fans can look forward to new stories from hogwarts. and the search of the son of el chapo. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports that a son of the drug lord el chapo is being held captive in mexico. jesus guzman and five others were kidnapped on monday from a pacific coast resort. police think he was abducted by rivals of his father joaquin guzman who is in a mexican prison. "the washington post" reports that no prosecution of follow the manufacturer of defective helmets for u.s. troops by inmates. the army recalled more than 126,000 helmets at a cost to the government of over $19 million. investigators say the ohio company that uses prison workers made helmets from degraded armor. the minneapolis star tribune reports a suburban police chief

killed a black motorist last month. the chief in st. anthony calls the officer who shot castille level-headed. "wall street journal" says target will calm complaints about bathroom use by transgender people. the company will spend $20 million to add single-stall bathrooms. target lets shoppers and staff use the bathrooms corresponding to their gender identity. national public radio says it will discontinue the comments feature on its website. the network says only a tiny fraction of listeners respond to stories on npr.org. it says it gains listener's views through the social media "the atlantic says three new "harry potter" books will be released early next month. they will be published as ebooks. they will explore characters other than harry. author j.k. rowling had said she was ending the series when the

nasdaq added one point. tech company cisco inspects will lay off 25,000 employees. they will cut about 7% of its work force. cisco's business has been hurt by corporate customers outsourcing their data centers, rather than building their open. -- their own. at&t is doing away with overage fees as it introduces new self-service plans and offer more data but a higher price. the cheala dollars more expensive and comes with about three times as much data. at&t won't charge overage fees on these plans and they become available on sunday. the world's largest aircraft has taken flight for the first time. this is airlander. a hybrid blimp and airplane and took off yesterday on a short flight north of london. it's designed to use less fuel than a plane but carry heavier loads than conventional airships. silent video ads will begin

olympic swimming star michael phelps is back home. he had a low-key homecoming yesterday when he arrived in phoenix. he asked for privacy from reporters as hgo plane from rio with his fiance and his baby. in the meantime, swim champ katie ledecky was greeted by fans and took pictures and she wore her five olympic medals, four gold and one silver. the rio games have produced some memorable images. a new exhibit looks at sports photography and its place in history. jim axelrod spoke with one of the artists featured. >> reporter: as usain bolt's
