count? final hours to the white house. we're keeping a close eye on major races in arizona including john mccain looking for his sixth turn in the senate. we're also watching statewide propositions which would legalize marijuana and raise the minimum wage. right now people are still lining up. they're casting ballots before the polls close at the valley. there is no doubt this election will have historic implications. some students here in the valley made sure they were a part of it. . >> that was cell phone video out of a moving car. that's the wind you hear blowing there plus the scream of students outside north high school. here it is again here in phoenix. hundreds of students there

this is what it looked like outside mary veil high school. all those students telling people to get out and vote. they had a specific message. ashley is live at grant park. a rally is expected tonight. ashley, what exactly is that message? >> chris, the rally happening tonight ties into the high school students. this was a major scene. both high schools are a well organized protest. ste opinions about sheriff arpiyo. the students at north high school walked out around lunchtime to protest the possible re-election of the sheriff. the students marched from the school to ufcw holding signs, chanting. the school district says 7007 7007 -- 700 students ended up walking out some we spoke to said the stakes are too high not to do

mark? >> we're here in phoenix. right now voters tell us they're between 10 and 20 minutes to cast their ballot. look at the line behind me. it does snake outside. people telling me it is taking up to 20 minutes to cast their ballot. not hearing of extremely long lines outside. we want to show you video from this morning at chandler heights. voters here had minutes to cast their ballots. similar stories across the valley this morning the maricopa elections offices had computer glitches to deal with this morning. the elections office is offering about a dozen place across the valley that you can simply drop off your early ballot instead of waiting in line traditionally there are 724 polling place across the valley where you can traditionally wait in line this afternoon.

7:00 tonight. you can check out the polling places closest to you by going to arizona .vote. we have a link on our website. we'll look at the lines and situation as we get closer and closer to 7:00 p.m. we are live tonight, mark taylor, cbs 5 news. >> there's a lot of numbers out there. thanks. we're talking early voting numbers nationwide. 47 million people here let's take a look. over 1 million people voted early here in maricopa county let's talk who they are. 338,000 registered as democrats. here come the republicans here, over 433,000 were registered as republicans. then the independents have been growing numbers each and every year in the grand canyon state. over 277,000 registered as independents. it. >> seeing there have been issues

7,000 in maricopa county. they have been flagged. 5,000 had questionable signatures. 2200 just weren't signed at all. the county says everyone affected should have been notified. just hours ago, a nevada court judge shut down a request from donald trump campaign lawyers. they claim four voting sites stayed two hours beyond the voting time. his attorneys wanted those machines set side for investigation the judge ruled saying the registrar's voters were obligated by state law to maintain the records that the trump campaign was seek. >> there are several big races featuring several high profile republicans running for seats here in arizona and in washington. >> we are live at the gop headquarters in downtown phoenix. the gop under a lot of pressure to keep our state red tonight.

a lot of eyes here at the gop headquarters focused on two arizona sheriffs well known on a national basis. their political futures hang in the balance tonight. the first would be the sheriff arpiyo going for seventh term of the maricopa county. he's 84 years old, officially charged with contempt of court. he's almost completely stopped doing press conference, stopped answering questions, appearing before cameras. this is arpiyo and campaign. the second sheriff is popular in penelle county. this could be the end of the line politically speaking. a lotted of outside money came in to run ads against him. many here do not think he can overcome all of that to win the cd 1 race tonight. other prominent republicans

also. as for senator john mccain, he's not expected to join the rest of the republicans here at the hyatt. he's having his own party up the road. live from the hyatt, cbs 5 news. >> thank you. he was talking about the pressure to stay red. many are wondering whether arizona will go blue. that would be the first time in 20 years. >> folks are really hoping to do that at the democratic party's headquarters in downtown phoenix. lindsay, any action down there yet? still waiting for crowds to show up? >> we're waiting. we're in the downtown renaissance. this is where the movers and shakers in the democratic party in arizona will be tonight. we have a podium behind us. this is where key people will be speaking. there are two big monsters we can watch the results tonights. a few key races we're keeping an eye out here in our neck of the

mentioned. paul is hoping to unseat arpiyo first time since 19926789 their race has been contentious honing in on the contempt of court case and harping on a domestic issue in the past. kirkpatrick says it's time for fresh leadership and congressional seat 1, the one kirkpatrick is vacating. now taking experts kept a close eye on markets today. i spoke to one, and he said the market closed on a high note today. he says the market now is favoring a hillary clinton win, a lot of traders think it will be much of the same of president obama's policies. the market does not like uncertainties. we'll keep an eye on that and all of these races throughout the evening. for now, we're live, cbs 5 news.

a lot of people are concerned about what this would do driving under the influence and also how it would affect under age minors in possession. going to have a lot more on that coming up. we're also talking about -- actually i understand morgan lowe we have him live now down covering proposition 205. as we've been saying, this is one of the things that could come down to a razer thin margin either way. >> yeah, the polling showed this really tight. take a look behind me. this is the crescent ball room where they're hoping to have a big celebration here tonight. there's been a lot of movement setting up for what they hope is a big party. i'll tell you, this has been a tough campaign with accusations of missed information flying from side to side. people that wrote the law claim it's going to create new revenue for schools and law enforcement through attacks on the legal

initiative is called regulate marijuana like alcohol, the reality is it creates serious loopholes that would make it hard toe arrest pot spoke -- harder to arrest pot smokers and lessens the penalties for children that try to buy pot. >> it doesn't say exactly the same as alcohol. we feel it's far safer than alcohol. attend of the day, we didn't want kids to be strapped with a fely mistake. >> we'll have circumstances then where i'm denied that evidence to prove that someone should be held accountable for committing a crime. >> that's a little taste of the debate. the party is going to get going at 7:00 tonight. we'll be here all night. for now, back to you. >> of course we'll explore both

you're getting tonight from the arpiyo camp? >> well, we have certainly been reaching out to the sheriff for the last 24 hours to get some sense of what's going on with his campaign, what's going on with the sheriff himself. they haven't been returning our calls. we understand he's going to be here tonight. it's just about show time here. this is where the gop has gathered the last several major elections. this room will be packed to the from now. we understand they've issued 1400 tickets. of course one of the marquee races is in fact the contest between the sheriff joe arpiyo and his challenge her paul penzo. i want to bring in the coolest title in state government, sergeant at arms for the gop. he puts all this together. you're going to have a big crowd tonight. lots of heavy lifting behind the
