10:02 pm
to win and see what happens next. >>reporter: talking about mccain there giving mccain the toughest race he's ever had. keep in mind kirkpatrick lost her congressional seat in 2010 she gained back in 2012 and she won it while she wouldn't firmly say to me whether or not she will in fact run again there is some history of her losing congress basketball coming back for a win. >> derek thanks 10:02 on election night and we're going to continue to go back and forth between not only the local and statewide raises but what's happening nationally. let's take you back out live to new york city. we're going to rejoin cbs news coverage coming up at around 10:30, 10:35. but you're looking live inside the javits center. that is that glass enclosed convention center on the west side home to some of the biggest conventions in the country. tonight the entire democratic

victory party for the very first female to be elected president of the united states the 45th president but at this point there is a lot of confusion. there is a lot of shock. there is a lot of despair inside that room. this race still too close to call, but the numbers simply don't add up right now for the electoral college but it's adding up for this room right there. >> hillary clinton may have actually seen some of the writing on the wall earlier. her tweet not really one of victory it says this team has so much to be proud of whatever happens tonight thank you for everything. and she also wrote that everything we worked for work towards comes down today but of urse right now she is trailing hillary clinton with 20009 electoral votes. trump has 238 we're still waiting for nevada, minnesota looks like they could be the
10:04 pm
>> minnesota is 10. electoral votes. >> total of 16. nevada has 6. that would be nowhere near the 270 electoral votes that clinton would need to take the white house and that explains basically the celebration you are seeing right now at trump's campaign rally in new york tonight you. >> that is in the downtown hyatt on 5th avenue very close to rockefeller center right up the street by about a block from fox news center. let's take a the big statewide races here back in arizona it looks like john mccain is returning to the head of the armed services committee and the head of the arizona delegation. he will be serving his 6th term at 80 years old, the ap calling john mccain the winner of the u.s. senate seat to take back his seat. >> john mccain holding his victory rally. let's go live to jason berry. mccain took the stage a little
10:05 pm
applause and a lot of clearing the moment that it was announced mccain was the winner of this race. they started chanting mccain healthcare contain it didn't stop even after the senator walked into the auditorium. mccain as you mentioned was elected to 6th term in office he took the stage and he thanked his supporters campaign staff. he told me he wanted to wait until he spoke to congresswoman anne kirkpatrick before coming out to he called this his toughest fight yet. mccain hanked his supporters for their vote encouragement and opportunity to serve arizona as their senator for the another 6 years. we asked him what it means to be re-elected. >> it means a lot a chance for me to continue to serve and use my backgrounds and experience and knowledge in these very difficult challenging times particularly in the world allegation you know. >>reporter: mccain told the

divided he's hoping to go back to washington and try and ease some of the divisive necessary in our country. the other arizona senator jeff flake we also saw south carolina senator lindsey graham close friends of senator mccain. and joe lieberman he said he wanted to be here to support again, still a few people watching the tv monitors a very happy crowd. they are happy that their senator arizona senator john mccain has been re-elected. reporting live jason berry cbs 5 news. >> thank you for that live report. the question is who will senator john mccain serve with in the white house. will it be donald trump someone that he supported for a very long time until finally disassociating himself with the nominee or will it be hillary clinton. >> funny enough it was trump
10:07 pm
mccain in his bid even though mccain came out victorious tonight. but here is the look at the map as it stands right now the electoral count we have hillary clinton with 209 electoral votes. donald trump with 244. right now it looks like nevada, minnesota, pennsylvania and maine could go towards hillary clinton. we're looking at some of the maps here. but that would not be enough to get her to right now trump has a significant lead with 244. my map is updating and it looks like he will end up taking michigan wisconsin and arizona. >> 27 precincts reporting nationwide popular vote has tightened a little bit. 48% to 47% donald trump still maintaining a lead by about a
10:08 pm
it's all about the electoral college and it could really come down to who's going to take michigan. michigan with 16 of those electoral votes but is it going to be enough for hillary clinton to get to that magical number of 270 with the lead that donald trump has right now. >> i'm looking at the numbers for michigan and right now it is very close there. but still they are putting it right now it looks like they are putting it towards clinton. they have more votes in, but a million 500,000. but trump has about a 50,000 lead in the votes there. right now. that state is leaning red. they have 68% of the precincts reporting. very, very close 48% to 46% right now. >> help sort this out we have fired up our arizona election center. nicole c has been in the election center.
10:09 pm
active night here in the election center. we've been watching the local races we've been watching those battleground states and you said it comes down to a numbers game it certainly does. and let's talk about the world market numbers. you've got this entrepreneurial businessman a political outsider who's running on the promise of change and off of promises of his success as an entrepreneur but the global markets are reeling. we'r index has dropped 2.5 points. the dollar fallen to yen and south korea and australian markets are also seeing red already this morning. so what that's going to do for the dow we'll wait and see when the markets open. electoral college another look at the breakdown. 244-209 and trump is in the lead. i'm going to bring you live to the map that our analysts have been playing with back lynn the scenes here and chris you were
10:10 pm
trump. and we're watching so many of these they are tinkering with the numbers. if trump gets arizona that's not going to be enough to push him over but if you're looking at they are plugging in where these states are leaning look at our numbers here. 289 trump, 248 clinton. so that's not enough of a differential that you're going to have an actual legitimate argument to challenge this. it is going to come down our analysts are saying not down to the wire tonight down to i said east coast early or west coast early. they said hard to say. so we're watching those numbers and when those states get called that's what's going to make all the difference. back to you guys. >> hey nick real quick are those experts saying is it the same problem we have in arizona? all of these huge amounts the volume of early votes that have yet to be counted? is that a problem in other states? >> they are not seeing that as much of a problem. they are saying the pollsters
10:11 pm
because they said here's the deal. you had everything skewing towards clinton but a lot of people weren't very apt to admit they were voting for donald trump even they know they were going to do that. a lot of people holding very close to the vest who they were going to be voting for. you got two candidates highly disliked people were not did he didn't want to see in office. analysts are say it's time to rebrand and look at the party base. >> the confessional and ballot box two places your secrets can be kept. thank you for the live report inside the arizona elections center. we want to go back to our coverage of the ballot propositions. >> one of the biggest issuess on the ballot this election cycle is whether we should legalize recreational marijuana in arizona many.
10:12 pm
votes have it at 53 to 47. this is fairly close. we have 59% of precincts reporting this has not been called at this point. cbs 5 morgan loew is live at crescent ballroom that's where the pro prop 205 supporters are. what's the mood like down there? >>reporter: chris about i'd say abt who were here earlier have started to mill out an leave it's definitely thin out. mood is not incredibly optimistic a little while ago one of the heads of the campaign came out on the stage and said look according to our internal polling before today we were going to lose this early vote by a wider margin than they actually are now. however, you know the vote is
10:13 pm
6%. they are holding out hope that as precinct levels votes come in from across the state that that number will get shorter that gets, the difference will get smaller and smaller but they did say they don't expect that this is going to be called tonight. they said it could actually take a couple of days. but mood here i wouldn't say it was terrible, but definitely not, haven't heard any tears yet ton >> all right morgan loew reporting from crescent ballroom where they are still holding out hope. no sure deal made one way or the other. >> i think that is the term that is used widely throughout the race throughout this evening. it is 10:13 on a historic election evening. stay right here to cbs 5 news we've got more coverage of tonight's big election. >> after the break we'll be looking at more races and the other main proposition raising minimum wage here in arizona.
10:16 pm
the only division we should ever see in a community is those that commit the crime ijw those of us who are willing to hold them accountable. >> that is the new sheriff elect for maricopa county paul penzone former phoenix police sergeant he also went on to say everyone in arizona no matter what you look like we are all entitled to respect.
10:17 pm
with 40% of the precincts reporting in. ap called this at 9:05 tonight arizona time. paul penzone the winner beating the incumbent looking to go to his 7th term sheriff joe arpaio. >> it appears sheriff joe arpaio will not be taking the stage at the gop headquarters to make his concession speech. instead i was just handed this statement. the march cop county sheriff joe arpaio released the following statement this evening i do want to read this to you. it says quote it has been an honor and privilege v cop can county for the last 24 years. tonight the people have spoken and while ava and i are difficult pointed in the results we spec their decision. we want to congratulate paul penzone on his victory and we look forward to working with him on a seem list transition in the faith and trust they put in me over the years eye tremendously grateful for the hard work and dead indication of every employee in my office their self list and tireless
10:18 pm
serving the people is to be greatly admired. again that was the statement released just a short time ago from march cop can county sheriff arpaio who was unsuccessful for his bid in a 7th term in office. >> social media has played a big role in this election trending on twitter right now in phoenix of course paul penzone proposition 206 as well as proposition 205 both sides of this issue have been very loud throughout social media. cbs 5 live in the some of their reactions through social media. lauren. >>reporter: a lot of people online i think are a little taken aback by the failing of prop 205. earlier this afternoon we saw some folks tweeting very interested on how arizona will vote on this should say recreational marijuana that was what was on the balance today. traditionally a lot of people were thinking that it would pass and once it came down that
10:19 pm
we had this tweet come across saying thanks to all who actually did the research. with time we'll get there congratulations california recreational neighbor. now there were five states who had recreational marijuana on their ballots tonight and it seems that arizona is going to be the only one that does not pass their proposition. another tweet here tonight well, arizona voted against marijuana legalization but kicked arpaio out of office. so definitely a lot of mixed emotions tonight on social media about the passing or the failing rather of prop 205 guys. >> let's be clear prop 205 is not passing at this point but that is still a proposition that race has not been called yet we will be following that. we want to take a look at more of the results let's look at county attorney maricopa county attorney right now bill
10:20 pm
the vote. his challenger diego rodriguez with 47%. this is still an active race this one has not been called. however, prop 206 to raise the minimum wage let's take a look at that. that race has been called. the minimum wage in arizona will go up to $10 an hour in january and then in 2020 that will again be bumped up to $12 an hour. again prop 206 passing in arizona. >> 10:20 on electionni we're going to return you to cbs evening news network coverage of the nation wild election. you are looking live it is now 12:20 in the morning wednesday morning in new york city and that is the scene inside the javits center. there is the home of the hillary clinton what they were expecting to be a victory party but it looks like the victory is going to be celebrated at any moment here at the trump held quarters this is the downtown hyatt right there
10:21 pm
tale of two parties right there. one extremely excited ready to explode when the news comes down and one staring in disbelief at the numbers whether or not they hold true that should be coming over the next few hours. >> we do have more election coverage coming up but first here are the latest numbers coming in for arizona
10:22 pm

10:26 pm
>> cbs 5 ashli demartino with that story tonight. >>reporter: they have had a lot of early votes that have not been counted as you just mentioned. about 350,000 so far. so they see it's going to take them probably about a week maybe a little bit longer to actually count all of those the county recorder says at that time not really out of the north. i know you were giving some numbers a moment ago let's talk about the we know that helen purcell has been in office for about 27 years. as you said she was unchallenged 3 out of the 4 last elections and of course we have the mess back in march with arizona presidential preference election here i spoke with her earlier to find out how she's feeling about tonight. >> i was a little bit chagrined at the first results that came up but they seem to be improving. but we will see. that's up to the voters what they think.
10:27 pm
think. right now i have a job to do and i will continue to do that job. >> as you said it's too close to call at this point. of course again they will begin to count those early ballot votes they have not counted tomorrow morning. live at the recorders office ashli difficult martino cbs 5 news. >> a lot of answers thanks for the live report. we've got more coverage of tonight's historic election coming up after this break. >> here's latest congressional races

10:32 pm
coverage in just a few moments a little gamer of hope inside the javits center associated press disreported that hillary clinton has won nevada and 6 electoral votes. we're going to keep an eye on that number right now. but it is still a lot of despair and lot of disbelief inside the javits center in new york city. but back here at home in arizona the big story line tonight for us are all of those hundreds of thousands of uncounted early votes. political director dennis welch with insight on the ballots. it sounds like registrar's office had control over some things but not others. >>reporter: some of the problem we're seeing here now is a rule that i mean this is a good rule is that the state has to come in and certify all the ballot counting machines. now that is a good thing. what's bad here for the voters who want results now who want to know what's going on here they didn't get that test done until october 28th so the
10:33 pm
start counting those early ballots until november 1st. now at the pace they are going at right now they can count about a hundred thousand per day but they got about 170,000 of those early ballots they still have to counts again remember throughout october early voting there was a record number of early ballots sent into the county over one million of them. we're talking about a lot of ballots that they had to count. they also expect another 200,000 early ballots to be uncounted tonight that were left we're looking at about 370 to 400,000 ballots that are going to be uncounted and again, count about a hundred thousand ballots per day my quick math i don't know if i'm right it's been a long night already but that's going to be about 4 days for them to count that puts us at saturday soto see results. can you imagine if those presidential race comes down to arizona and people are waiting for days to see how this turns out could be crazy.
10:34 pm
we could have lawyers put getting on plains from both political parties right now. >> it would be crazy a lot has to happen before something like that would play out. i did see on 538.com they are the pollsters out there they are saying a that at some point unless hillary clinton can somehow pull out arizona she may be in for a pretty tough defeat tonight they are also saying it may come down to arizona here tonight. we saw that nevada was called for clinton and put in the clinton camp. >> these 350,000 uncounted engaged in the process. they go through they want their ballots mailed to them. they are urban. they are educated. wouldn't it be more likely these would be clinton voters as opposed to trump voters possibly pro prop 205 pro 206 voters. >> you know you can make a case for all of that right now. i mean we know what we saw early balloting togethers already came out republicans were in the lead there.
10:35 pm
running the prop 205 than wants to legalize marijuana they believe late voters late early voters those day of voters went to the polls and dropped off their ballots they believe those voters are theirs they are making a strong case if they can close that gap for prop 205 within 40, 50,000 votes by the end of tonight they will make up the grounds over the next four days as the county counts those ballots. >> really make arguments on both sides. we really appreciate your insight political editor there. let's take a look at the latest electoral college map and chris you can see those numbers have changed slightly. >> yes. that's right it went up a little bit for clinton when she took nevada but you guys were talking about possible 11 electoral college votes that arizona has for grabs of right no now donald trump is leading in arizona 49% to 45%. let's less than a hundred
