disruption causing major problems for people traveling through sky harbor airport. this is cbs 5 news. a checkpoint at sky harbor terminal 4 was shut down this morning because of a security scare. let's get out to kylee cruz. what is going on at this hour?>> reporter: good afternoon. at this hour, sky harbor is back up and running today but it was definitely a little bit of a eventful time for folks traveling out of sky harbor. phoenix police were called here at 9 am to investigate a suspicious package at this checkpoint. let's come to the screen. we will show you what happened. here we are. this is where the package was. phoenix police decided to check down these two checkpoints. there are longer lines. all these folks that are traveling here rushed over to

that meant very long lines. we were there as folks waited in line. hundreds of people waited in lines, obviously some of them were frustrated by all of this. there were some delays as a result. after about 9 am this morning, that is when sky harbor opened all of the gates back up again and everyone started running through the airport to try to get to their particular gate to make sure they would not miss their flight.>> i think they handled it passenger, you were not frustrated?>> no. that they could handle it. -- glad they could handle it.>> reporter: we are taking a look at some of the times. these are some of the arrivals that are delayed. we do have some delays as a result of what happened earlier. if you are flying out of town or maybe you have some guests coming into town, make sure to check with your airline before

also, make sure to get to the airport a little early as well. that never hurts, especially on a day like today. the airport is back up and running. all of the gates are moving work we are still working to figure out exactly what happened and what was inside the package. everything is moving smoothly this morning here at sky harbor.>> thank you. the other breaking story is the arizona coyotes have called a news conference this afternoon to announce plans for a this is an artist's rendition of what the new arena should look like. the team's current home is only 13 years old but the teams relationship with the glendale city council has deteriorated badly during that time leaving that team to search for a new team in the valley. the team had secured a deal for a 16,000 seat arena to be built in the east valley on the edge

corner of mcclintock on what is currently the carson golf course. the arena should be ready in about three years. the details should be revealed at 2:30 pm and we plan to stream that announcement live on our free cbs 5 mobile app. two men were killed in a terrible crash overnight in phoenix .>> reporter: that accident left 35th avenue be closed for most of the morning. investigators had to figure out what led to the accident. this all started around 2:30 am when both vehicles were going northbound on 35th avenue. they say the driver of the bmw was possibly going at a high rate of speed. that is when he struck a honda civic in the rear, killing both passengers and the vehicle. as far as the driver of the bmw, he was taken into custody with possible impairment.

precinct where they were doing more tests. we spoke with lieutenant taylor who said that the scene was a lot bigger in person.>> the impact was catastrophic. the occupants of the honda civic, both which we only know as males at this time. we don't have ages or identities. they have both been pronounced deceased on scene. the driver of the bmw was processed for impairment. he received reporter: the passenger in the bmw also had minor injuries. he stayed here on the scene talking to detectives. a woman was struck by a car and killed on 19th avenue south of dunlap this morning. the woman was crossing midblock when she was hit. it was dark. the driver simply did not see her according to police. she was rushed to the hospital but doctors could not save her. police do not believe speed or

and the driver will not face any charges. police have identified the chandler mother who was killed while crossing the street with her two young children. it happened saturday night. the victim's kids remain in critical condition. this happened saturday night and ponderosa. a man ran a red light and hit the mother and her children who are only two years old at three ye intersection where the accident happened. the show low police officer killed in the line of duty last week will be laid to rest today. there was a viewing for darrin reed this morning. there is a procession underway right now for the funeral service that starts in about an hour from now. it is open to the public. officer read was shot and killed last week and he was a friend to many.>> he was not

he was not badge heavy. he was a very good officer. he is really going to be missed. the community feels a real loss.>> the officer served 10 years with the police department and leaves behind a wife and two children. donald trump sat down with 60 minutes for his first interview since winning the election last tuesday. the wide-ranging discussion covered a number of topics including his famous call to build us/mexico border. chris boswell is at the white house with more from the interview and the latest on trump's attempt to fill out his staff. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump tells 60 minutes that his campaign pledges were starting points for negotiations including the wall along the us/mexico border. >> would you accept a fence?>> for certain areas i would. a wall is more appropriate for others. i am very good at this.

that this may be the lasting image of a massive earthquake that hit new zealand. look at this. people in new zealand have s damage after the earthquake. it hit in the middle of the night killing two people. hundreds of people are staying in shelters right now and 1000 tourists are stranded in the small town popular for whale watching. hannah daniels has the latest.>> reporter: strong aftershocks continue to shake new zealand after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the country's south island. cracking roads and demolishing homes and businesses.>> it is a bloody shame.

reporter: the powerful tremors have triggered landslides. these three cows along with other livestock were stranded on islands of grass as the ground ripped apart around them. the aftershocks continued to rattle the nerves of already exhausted and terrified residents. the quake triggered a nominee about 6 feet high. residents along the east coast were told to move to higher ground. damage to the main highway has completely cut off the small rural town where emergency officials say 1000 tourists are stranded.>> the road is blocked off. the only way through his flying people in and out. there are quite a few tourists who are stuck. >> reporter: the head of new zealand's civil defense force say a navy ship is on the way to help very people who are isolated to safety. hannah daniels, cbs news.

112,000 early ballots have not been processed yet. there are another 55,000 provisional ballots. one race is still too close to call. the race for maricopa quarter -- county recorder. arizona's recreational marijuana initiative is almost assured to lose cause the latest numbers have been no vote up about 100,000 votes. it looks like the tao -- dow jones is up 80 points. american apparel is filing for bankruptcy this morning for the second time in about a year. the canadian company has a deal in place to buy the name and inventory for $66 million but that does not include the stores. the stores are now likely to just shut down.

scottsdale. we do have lots of sunshine. we will warm it up to a high of 86 degrees. this morning's low was 57 degrees. we have not been that court since april 26. it has been quite a while. the normal for this time of year is 76 for a high and 53 for a low. looking at the radar, you can see that we do have quiet conditions. we are going to stay like that today and into tomorrow. look at the larger pi. pressure producing some rain and snow across the intermountain west and pacific northwest. high pressure is in control of our weather pattern and that is strengthening through tomorrow allowing the temperatures to continue to climb to near record territory tomorrow afternoon. here is our game changer. this is a trough that is right around the aleutian islands. wednesday through friday, this will impact our weather. starting wednesday, we will see the winds kick up out of the southwest. those winds will continue

much cooler air mass will move in. here is the flow ofthe pattern. through tuesday, high pressure is in control and there is the cold front. you can see these very tightly packed isobars. those lines are indicating the stronger winds that will be moving through. behind it, we have this cooler air that will die down from the north and that will help our temperatures feel very fall like thursday and friday. feature test shows quiet conditions. e we are working our way into wednesday and we start to see cloud cover increase ahead of that system. maybe a little bit of rain and snow late wednesday night around the arizona/utah border. highs today across the state are 64 for flagstaff. 84 for casagrande. the highs around the valley, 87 in chandler. 86 for fountain hills. your forecast for today, sunny skies feeling warm.
