ormer republican congressman mike rogers announced he was quitting the effort. in a tweet, elliott cohen, a former state department official under bush 43 called trump's team angry and arrogant and urging colleagues, quote, to stay away. back on capitol hill, democrats kept up calls for the prt- bannon as chief strategist. >> as long as a champion of racial division is a step away from the oval office, it will be impossible to take trump's efforts to give a nation seriously. >> reporter: the republican governors gathered in orlando had a different view. >> he gets to choose whoever he wants to select. >> reporter: inauguration day is a little more than two months away. the trump transition did clear one hurdle last night. vice president-elect mike pence spent a letter of understanding

detailed briefings be sent to the trump administration going forward. >> hena daniels here in new york, thank you. the topic of transition will likely come up today when vice president-elect mike pence meets with vice president joe biden. biden is hosting pence and his wife at their washington home. house republicans unanimously vote to reelect paul ryan as speaker. ryan had been highly critical of president-t yesterday, ryan told fellow republicans he had trump's support. >> we are so eager to get to work with our new president-elect to fix america's pressing problems. >> ryan still has to win a floor vote for speaker in january. on the democratic side, minority leader nancy pelosi position is being challenged. pelosi agreed to postpone leadership elections two weeks to determine her future.

for 14 years. for the fifth time in u.s. history, someone has been elected president by winning the electoral vote but having lost the popular vote. all of the votes have not been counted yet, but hillary clinton leads president-elect trump by about a million votes. retiring california senator barbara boxer issishing a bill to end the electoral college and calls the electoral college outdated. coming up ons way this country elects a president. president obama's visit to greece sparked large protests in athens yesterday. this is mr. obama's final overseas trip as president. yesterday, he had what appeared to be words of advice for the incoming president. >> we are going to have to guard against a rise in a crude sort of nationalism or ethnic

winchester and was waiting for him. police say the suspect in a stabbing at five students at a utah high school was in his first year there after being home-schooled. orem issued a letter expressing condolences. the victims are expected to survive. the suspect was subdued with a taser after he stabbed hi those drought-driven wildfires in the southeast have burned more than 80,000 acres. dozens of major fires are burning. a burned ban has been initiated in tennessee and parts of alabama, georgia, mississippi, north carolina, and kentucky. many areas are blanketed in a dangerous haze. one town in southern kentucky shut its schools today because the smoke was so heavy. for the time being, construction of the dakota

they flew to tuscaloosa to play the university of alabama yesterday and dayton won 77-72. denver approves marijuana in social settings. the lapd clarifies its stance on immigration. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "los angeles times" says the city's police will not help deport immigrants during the trump administration. the chief of the department says they will avoid federal immigration issues as it has for decade. the president-elect has vowed to crack down on undocumented imts reports the distribution of racist leaflets at southern methodist university and titled while white women shouldn't date black men. the school condemned the flyers and is investigating. the leaflets is for the logo of a white supremacy movement called alt-right. a west virginia mayor endorsed a slur against the first lady. a facebook post by another official in the tiny town called

the mayor added a comment saying the post made her day. "wall street journal" reports increased backing for the american civil liberties union since donald trump's victory. the aclu says it's received more than a hundred thousand online donations totaling over $8.2 million in the last week. the group says it is the biggest surge of support in its 96-year history. the hartford courant say some sandy hook families are against gun companies. they want to sue companies connected to the rifle used in the 2012 newtown massacre. a judge dismissed their case but the families are asking for an appeal in connecticut supreme court. "time" says denver is the first u.s. city to allow marijuana use in bars and restaurants. officials determined yesterday a ballot question on the issue in last week's election had passed. smoking indoors is still banned, but owners may create outdoor smoking areas.

at issue is a golden diamond bracelet worth nearly $11,000. ivanka trump wore it during a "60 minutes" interview on sunday. on monday, she sent an e-mail to fashion designers promoting the bracelet. in a statement, trump's company said, quote, it's still making adjustments. the trump named is removed from three luxury apartment buildings here in new york city. about 600 residents and three rental buildin embarrassed to live in buildings associated with mr. trump. the management company said the purpose of the change is to have the buildings assume a neutral identity that appeals to all current and future residents. twitter is introducing a mute button in an effort to combat internet harassment. twitter users will be able to mute words and phrases and even emoji. twitter is criticized for not moving fast enough to ban harassment on their site.
