floats, but for the nypd, this parade is all about security. more than 3,000 officers will be here today to make sure everyone stays safe. members of new york's finest began taking position along central park west overnight, gearing up to protect millions of spectators expected at the thanksgiving day parade. >> nypd is going to mount an even strong operation this year. >> reporter: new york city mayor e dozens of sand-filled sanitation truck blocking off traffic in the first of the parade's history and officers on the ground to thwart a terror attack. >> all of our police officers, each and every one will have a smartphone and if any incidents on the route we will be able to connect with the incident command post quickly and deal with any issue as soon as it comes up. >> reporter: the heavy police

do not deter people to come out last night to see the massive balloons come to life on the parade route. this man and his daughter were among them. >> to see the excitement in her eyes and watch thanksgiving kickoff and the holiday season is a big joy. >> reporter: lisa and her daughter ava also stayed focused on the meaning of the holiday. >> we have so much to be thankful for, we are very lucky to be here to live in america and live in the best city in the world. >> reporter: while there is no credible terror threat against the parade or the country, federal officials are urging americans to stay vigilant, especially in public places. there will be 42 different balloons in today's parade. there is going to be an updated charlie brown balloon and also a replica of the first-ever balloon in the thanksgiving day parade. that is felix the cat from 1927. the entire event kicks off at 9:00 a.m. eastrn. >> jamie yuccas here in new york city, happy thanksgiving, jamie. well, for most of the country, the weather is

of the northeast. and the pacific northwest is bracing for heavy snow in higher elevations and rain elsewhere. in utah, snow made for difficult travel last night. icing over roadways and diminishing visibility. chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has the thanksgiving forecast. >> reporter: most of the country this thanksgiving is enjoying some peaceful weather. one area we will watch up into the northeast, a lot of clouds and light wintry mix to watch states and most of the same in friday and most in rain and northern new england seeing a bit of sun. everybody else pretty mild and dry. one other part to watch is the pacific northwest. another round of heavy rainfall moving in, some gusty winds and the rain slides down the coast as we head into friday and saturday to start the weekend and eventually heading all the way into central california as we look towards saturday. this is part of a bigger pattern change for us and talk about it in a second.

air hubs, no issues. minor delays around new york and seattle. otherwise, coast-to-coast, pretty quiet. here is the pattern shift. as we move toward the holiday weekend, a lot of colder air in the west and produce mountain snow and resurgence of warmer air and mild conditions in the middle of the country to end the holiday weekend and for travel home after thanksgiving. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. have a great holiday. in tennessee, a sixth child has died from injuries received five other children remain hospitalized. police are trying to figure out why the bus was on the wrong road and they have received the toxicology report on the driver. manuel bojorquez reports. >> reporter: police announced they have eliminated one possible reason johnthony walker lost control of the school bus on monday. chattanooga police sergeant austin garrett. >> we received toxicology reports back today from the tennessee bureau of investigation that shows no trace of alcohol or drugs in the driver's system.

not driving on a designated bus route. he is being held on vehicular manslaughter charges while investigators review video and black box recordings from the bus and look into other possible factors like excessive speed. investigators are also looking into claims some parents had complained about walker's driving in the past. while he has no previous criminal history, records show he was in a minor accident while driving a school bus two months ago. walker was hired by a private contractor, durham school services. ceo david a. duke released this video statement today. >> my responsibility now is to look for answers. >> reporter: the crash has left this community deep in mourning. lefrederick's 9-year-old cousin died in the crash. >> this community has lost some beautiful spirits, some beautiful angels, some students that made many people's lives brighter. >> reporter: doctors at this hospital say some students

spell their names or remember their own birthdays. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, chattanooga, tennessee. a white man in west virginia is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager. the case is under review as a possible hate crime. police say 15-year-old james means was shot and killed monday night in charleston after he bumped into william pullian outside of a store. the two confronted each other a second time and pullian said police say he shot means twice and left him to die and then went home to eat dinner. pullian told police, quote, that's another piece of trash off the street. the police officer shot near a detroit college campus died last night. 29-year-old collin rose was a five-year veteran of the wayne state university police force. he was shot in the head tuesday while investigating possible thefts off campus. police arrested a suspect in the
