>> when somebody at your table tells you that you've been hogging all of the side dishes, you can't have any more, i hope you respond with the creed that sums up the spirit of the hungry people, yes, we cran. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. in new york city, there is ramped up security, as the city prepares to celebrate with one of the country's oldest and largest parades. and while there is no credible threat, the fbi has alerted authorities it is concerned about potential attacks and the same is true for transportation hubs across the u.s. jamie yuccas is in new york on the parade route. jamie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. you know. for so many families, they come

floats, but for the nypd, this parade is all about security. more than 3,000 officers will be here today to make sure everyone stays safe. members of new york's finest began taking position along central park west overnight, gearing up to protect millions of spectators expected at the thanksgiving day parade. >> nypd is going to mount an even strong operation this year. >> reporter: new york city mayor e dozens of sand-filled sanitation truck blocking off traffic in the first of the parade's history and officers on the ground to thwart a terror attack. >> all of our police officers, each and every one will have a smartphone and if any incidents on the route we will be able to connect with the incident command post quickly and deal with any issue as soon as it comes up. >> reporter: the heavy police

do not deter people to come out last night to see the massive balloons come to life on the parade route. this man and his daughter were among them. >> to see the excitement in her eyes and watch thanksgiving kickoff and the holiday season is a big joy. >> reporter: lisa and her daughter ava also stayed focused on the meaning of the holiday. >> we have so much to be thankful for, we are very lucky to be here to live in america and live in the best city in the world. >> reporter: while there is no credible terror threat against the parade or the country, federal officials are urging americans to stay vigilant, especially in public places. there will be 42 different balloons in today's parade. there is going to be an updated charlie brown balloon and also a replica of the first-ever balloon in the thanksgiving day parade. that is felix the cat from 1927. the entire event kicks off at 9:00 a.m. eastrn. >> jamie yuccas here in new york city, happy thanksgiving, jamie. well, for most of the country, the weather is

of the northeast. and the pacific northwest is bracing for heavy snow in higher elevations and rain elsewhere. in utah, snow made for difficult travel last night. icing over roadways and diminishing visibility. chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has the thanksgiving forecast. >> reporter: most of the country this thanksgiving is enjoying some peaceful weather. one area we will watch up into the northeast, a lot of clouds and light wintry mix to watch states and most of the same in friday and most in rain and northern new england seeing a bit of sun. everybody else pretty mild and dry. one other part to watch is the pacific northwest. another round of heavy rainfall moving in, some gusty winds and the rain slides down the coast as we head into friday and saturday to start the weekend and eventually heading all the way into central california as we look towards saturday. this is part of a bigger pattern change for us and talk about it in a second.

air hubs, no issues. minor delays around new york and seattle. otherwise, coast-to-coast, pretty quiet. here is the pattern shift. as we move toward the holiday weekend, a lot of colder air in the west and produce mountain snow and resurgence of warmer air and mild conditions in the middle of the country to end the holiday weekend and for travel home after thanksgiving. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. have a great holiday. in tennessee, a sixth child has died from injuries received five other children remain hospitalized. police are trying to figure out why the bus was on the wrong road and they have received the toxicology report on the driver. manuel bojorquez reports. >> reporter: police announced they have eliminated one possible reason johnthony walker lost control of the school bus on monday. chattanooga police sergeant austin garrett. >> we received toxicology reports back today from the tennessee bureau of investigation that shows no trace of alcohol or drugs in the driver's system.

not driving on a designated bus route. he is being held on vehicular manslaughter charges while investigators review video and black box recordings from the bus and look into other possible factors like excessive speed. investigators are also looking into claims some parents had complained about walker's driving in the past. while he has no previous criminal history, records show he was in a minor accident while driving a school bus two months ago. walker was hired by a private contractor, durham school services. ceo david a. duke released this video statement today. >> my responsibility now is to look for answers. >> reporter: the crash has left this community deep in mourning. lefrederick's 9-year-old cousin died in the crash. >> this community has lost some beautiful spirits, some beautiful angels, some students that made many people's lives brighter. >> reporter: doctors at this hospital say some students

spell their names or remember their own birthdays. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, chattanooga, tennessee. a white man in west virginia is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager. the case is under review as a possible hate crime. police say 15-year-old james means was shot and killed monday night in charleston after he bumped into william pullian outside of a store. the two confronted each other a second time and pullian said police say he shot means twice and left him to die and then went home to eat dinner. pullian told police, quote, that's another piece of trash off the street. the police officer shot near a detroit college campus died last night. 29-year-old collin rose was a five-year veteran of the wayne state university police force. he was shot in the head tuesday while investigating possible thefts off campus. police arrested a suspect in the

president-elect trump is celebrating thanksgiving at his florida estate. he has chosen the first women for his cabinet and he is calling on the nation to come together. weijia jiang reports. >> it's where we raise -- >> reporter: president-elect donald trump is urging americans to unite, following a bitter election. >> it's my prayer that on this thanksgiving, we begin to heal our divisions and move forward as one country, strengthened b common resolve. >> reporter: mr. trump delivered the message through a video provided by his transition team. >> it's time to restore the bonds of trust between citizens, because when america is unified, there is nothing beyond our reach. >> reporter: on wednesday, former critic, south carolina governor nikki haley, accepted the position of u.s. ambassador to united nations. the daughter of immigrants from india, she is the first minority picked to serve the incoming

republican party donor betsy devos of michigan agreed to become mr. trump's secretary of education. she is a strong advocate for schools of choice. but never worked in a classroom. former rival, ben carson hinted on his facebook page he will accept the position of secretary of housing and urban development. the president-elect still has several more appointments to make before the inauguration, but he is on previous administrations. security is keeping a close eye on mr. trump's mar-a-lago estate in palm beach, florida, where mr. trump is celebrating a family thanksgiving and working on putting together his administration. weijia jiang, cbs news, the white house. president obama saved the lives of two final turkeys as his time in office nears an end. he pardoned the bird yesterday at the white house. their names are tater and tot. his two nephews joined him for the longstanding tradition but

an attempted ambush of a idaho police officer is caught on his squad car camera.

lewiston, a man wanted on warrants jumped from the truck holding what looked like a gun. the officer subdued the suspect and he is now being held on additional charges. proof another way smoking can endanger your health. an e-cigarette exploded in a store clerk's pants. >> all of a sudden, i thought he had fireworks in his pocket. >> it happened yesterday in new york city. the victim's lawyer says he is hospitalized with third-degree burns on his hand and leg. e-cigarette had been modified to make it more powerful. the lawyer plans to sue the manufacturer. striking cargo pilots are ordered back to work and pipeline protesters face a new hurdle. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the bismarck tribune reports that barriers are up on a bridge where protesters clashed with police officers. police in north dakota say

the bridge was closed nearly a month ago as the demonstrations grew. the "los angeles times" says striking pilots at a small airline that delivers amazon packages are being ordered back to work. a federal judge in cincinnati said he was ending the strike in the public's interest, adding, "imagine christmas without amazon." about 250 pilots walked out tuesday to protest working conditions. here is another look at this morning's top story. security officials are urging americans to be vigilant this thanksgiving. while there is no specific or credible threat, security has been ramped up at celebrations and travel hubs across the country. police are using sand-filled trucks, bomb-sniffing dogs and radiation detectors to try and prevent an attack. the thanksgiving holiday was established by abraham lincoln in 1863 to unite the country as the civil war raged. chip reid met someone who is making sure the legacy of our 16th president lives on. >> reporter: it's not every day
