ke out near timm good evening. i'm ann notarangelo. a grass fire in solano county has damaged one home. the fire broke out near tim road and midway road in dixson

north of vacaville this afternoon. it burned about 15 acres before it was controlled. don knapp is live at the scene with more. don? >> reporter: and that fire came up quickly and spread quickly, thanks to strong quirky winds, a couple of outbuildings were heavily damaged or destroyed and a couple of vehicles and a house was heavily damaged but a woman who lived in that house is alive and safe thanks to the efforts of an offduty firefighter. >> reporter: a grass fire or maybe it was four separate fires, started in a very short period of time, raising suspicions. a police officer says the area with the crime scene, as they investigate a possible arson. firefighters rushed to protect property. and the fields are mostly grass burned quickly. a caravan of firefighters headed for the huge power substation near interstate 80 east of the 505 interchange. and it was not damaged. but the heavy winds had residents worried. >> the wind is very changeable. it changes at a moment's notice. we had a crazy wind blowing today. >> an off-duty firefighter

driving through the area saw the smoke and ended up making a rescue. this is the house, now heavily damaged, and the aluminum siding apparently melted. >> the driveway fully engulfed with black smoke and i parked my car and walked up and i heard screaming. and i took off and ran up the driveway, and the younger lady was out, and the older lady was in the doorway and i went and got her out and she wouldn't come out because of the dog and i grabbed her and pulled her out. >> reporter: the assistant fire chief says they worked quickly and without air tankers. >> with the light fuel that we have and even with a light wind, we can have a fast-moving fire. then we're challenged with limited resources from the smaller agencies. however, a coordinated task, very aggressive firefighting, and we were able to quickly knock it down and then see what you got now. >> they remained in the area dousing the area and making sure the wind doesn't stir up more trouble.

>> don knapp in solano county, thank you. just two days after a toddler was killed by a pit bull, another child has been attacked. it happened just after 2:45 this afternoon on 82nd street in oakland. neighbors say a pit bull bit a 7-year-old girl in the face and that she has gone to the hospital. animal control is on the scene. we're not sure about the fate of the animals. a man died after being shot up to 15 times in san francisco. police say the 24-year-old victim was shot while he was in a car, and that was around 1:15 this morning, in the bayview district at revere avenue and haas street and he drove about three blocks before he crashed and he later died at the hospital, and no one has been arrested so far, and police do believe the murder is gang- related. oakland police are looking for the gunman who opened fire at a big party last night. and two people were shot inside an apartment on 83rd avenue near olive street, a 13-year- old boy was struck in the abdomen, and critically injured, and the

second victim, a 12 or 13-year-old girl was shot in the foot. and police do not have a clear description of the shooter and they're still investigating a motive. . already stretched to the limit but tonight more changes for the vallejo police department. they say it is for the safety of their officers. anne makovec takes a look at how it will impact the people who live there. . >> these are unchartered waters. we haven't had this kind of a problem before. >> reporter: the problem, fewer officers, and more dangerous confrontations. today, there were only six officers on duty in the city of vallejo, with a population of almost 117,000. >> and we are committed to doing the very best we can with what we're given. >> reporter: so starting today, vallejo police officers are doubling up, two officers in every patrol car. and there has been an increase in armed robberies here, and one officer is not always safe when responding on his or her own. >> we can't protect the citizens if the officers

themselves are not safe. >> the streets are so dangerous now, you really don't want to be out there, by yourself, kind of receiving a call, you know. >> reporter: only a few cars patrolling the city, some people are worried that no one is safe. >> we need the policeman, just in case something goes wrong, you know. you need somebody to protect you. >> the police have been trying this out off and on for the past couple of months and say their response time for calls have become longer but they're doing their best. >> our job is to protect the community and we're committed to do that. so if people think that they can get away with crime because there are fewer of us, that's a chance that they probably shouldn't take. >> there is nothing here for people to do, no support, no -- nothing for the youth, the kids to do. and losing officers, it is a bad, bad, bad thing. >> reporter: and earlier this month, the department announced it was suspending its canine and s.w.a.t. units for 90 days to balance the budget. that takes effect later on this

month. in vallejo, anne makovec, cbs 5 eyewitness news. san jose firefighters say the city's plan to close five fire stations could put people at risk. members of the firefighters union rallied at one of the threatened stations and then fanned out to neighborhoods that would be losing the station, and they say that closing the firehouses would mean an increased risk to public safety. some local residents share that concern. >> fire station seven is in my neighborhood but that was slated for closure two weeks prior to the chase elementary school fire so i am concerned about the lack of fire stations in the area and the slow response time. . >> the union says it offered concessions that are identical that police officers offered and the city approved and they say that proposal would save the 54 jobs slated for layoffs. . in other news around the bay area tonight, a palo alto playground is destroyed. investigators want to know who

set it on fire. the fire started late at night, on july 7 at hoover park. and witnesses say they saw juveniles in the area just before the fire started. investigators are offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to arrests. . a new weekly farmer's market at the cow palace could mean a new direction for the troubled facility. local and state officials helped bring the market to an area that has little access to fresh nutritious foods. the cow palace has recently taken heat after two people died from drug overdoses after a raid there. well, now, cow palace management is planning for new developments to better serve the local community. in san jose, tour bus operators were temporarily re- routed today. the california highway patrol performed random safety checks in the parking lot at great america. drivers had to show that they had the proper licenses to operate the tour bus. and their vehicles were given thorough safety inspections including a check of the lights and tires and under the hood. well, it is a place where

everyone's got garlic breath, the flavorful offerings at the festival in gilroy. they have been in battle. some have paid a big price. the special honor for war heroes by big leaguers. i'm meteorologist lawrence karnow in the cbs 5 weather center. still hot in spots around the bay area. but not so hot here. we will talk about that and the big cooldown coming our way coming up next. ,,,,,,,,

the special interests have chosen their governor. how about you? festival was held today in san the first annual west coast disability pride parade and festival was held today in san jose. it was a good turnout and good entertainment. the event celebrated the 20th anniversary of the americans with disabilities act. organizers say the event recognizes and embraces those with disabilities. well, lovers of the sinking rose are in garlic heaven in gilroy at the 32nd annual garlic festival. and among the stinky delicacies at this year's festival are watermelon crab meat, crawfish

grave over grits, and cranberry bread pudding. those are three of the recipes selected for the great garlic cookoff this year and thousands of people clogged the roads of the central valley town just to get a taste and the festival if you're interested continues tomorrow. the oakland a's honored some very special guests today before their game against the chicago white sox. they paid tribute to soldiers returning home from service in afghanistan and iraq. there was a special pre-game event at the stadium for the veterans. a marine who returned from iraq told us why he was so happy to be at the game. >> i'm really excited today, because we are going to watch the a's game, while the oakland a's and the oakland a's, they're my favorite team and that's why, so go a's. >> and they posed for pictures and chatted with the a's players before the game. >> reporter: runners are getting ready for tomorrow's san francisco marathon by

everybody is talking about the unusual summer we've been having. >> it is cool. >> pretty cool. >> we have a couple of hot spots, and it is well inland and it looks like today no exception and low clouds and fog and breaking up in the afternoon and sure we had a lot of sunshine but temperatures running below the average for this time of the year and let's take you out there right now and check things out this evening and not a bad evening, and many places inland, we have nice clear skies there, and it looks like that will continue to be the case over the next few hours and even then we fill up with fog a little later on and as we approach the coastline, here comes that fog again, and already making its way to the city of san francisco and i will tell you what, i think we will see more fog as we head to the next few days and deepening of the marine layer and that means pretty cool temperatures across parts of the bay area. and with that in mind, if you're headed out the door

tonight, it looks like some warm temperatures in the evening hours, and inland, still lots of sunshine. clear skies there. and temperatures in the 70s and mid 80s and as you get inside the bay, and 60s and low 70s and out toward the coastline, low clouds and fog and the better part of the day and not much clearing and keeping you cool. and tomorrow, still going to be hot, but well inland we're talking antioch and brentwood and places like that in the 90s but in the tri-valley under mostly cloudy skies and warm there and inside the bay, 60s and upper 70s to low 80s, as you head toward the valley and 50s and 60s with patchy fog out to the coastline and 81 degrees right now in livermore and 72 in san jose and 79 degrees san rafael and a cool 58 with the breeze blowing in the san francisco area and going to be hot in the central valley and 103 degrees in fresno. and watch out for those thunderstorms in the sierra nevada, and 80s and 90s and the monsoonal moisture going to wrap around and likely see some thunderstorms in the afternoon hours. and the high pressure out ahead of the system but this trough, guess what, it is going to camp out along the west coast and we

will see it pretty much since april and some summer sunshine, but it is through the low clouds and fog first and it is going to be pretty thick early on tomorrow morning and the deeper marine layer tomorrow morning and 8:00 we go, it will take time to burn off and because of the burnoff, cooler temperatures around the bay area and hotter temperatures, well inland tomorrow and plan on 50s and 60s coast side with not much sunshine in the bay and 70s and a few 80s and east bay temperatures, like the hot stuff, you got to head well inland, 93 in antioch and 85 degrees in walnut creek and you have 60s inside the bay, and north bay temperatures, running up in the 60s and also the 70s. and as we look out over the next couple of day, we will watch the numbers come down a few more degrees and headed below normal with more low clouds and fog on the way through the middle of the week and it looks like we're heading toward next weekend and the temperatures start to warm up and a lot of activities around the bay area, and you check out the marathon, and a great time to do it, cool to start and how about this, we have the

festival, and it looks like a good day to do it and lots of sunshine and of course, plenty of good times. >> more carbs tomorrow after the race. >> great. and it is a real life version of charlotte's web, an abandoned pig needs a community to come to its rescue. this loveable 800-pound hog was found running wild outside of sacramento and animal control rounded them up and took them to an animal rescue group and although the foundation usually takes in horses, they fell in love with wilbur and now they need money to build a pen and veterinary care. >> we are not really set up for pigs and we have to build a pen and they have special needs as i have been learning and then we want one that he will be happy with and have a really good life. >> the goal is to raise $2,000 for wilbur's care, with the community support, it does look

just a couple of days before its lights, camera, action, and first, a couple of baseball games, right? >> yes, and you too could be in the movie "money ball." >> really? >> as an extra. >> that's kind of neat. >> you can dress in 2002 wear. >> well the coliseum turns into a movie set on monday for the filming of the movie and now we have the highlights in the wide screen version. mazero has plenty of run support from the swinging a's. derrick barton gets the scoring started with an rbi double. the a's score two in the first and three more in the second. kevin hits one off the wall for the 10th rbi since the all-star break. and 5-2a's in the 4th. and curt suzuki lines one to left. it appears to go out. but it is ruled a double. and suzuki can't believe it. and the umps get together and reverse the call. and number 11 for suzuki.

next batter, big jack. there is no doubt about this one. a two homer day for him. the a's beat the white sox 10-2 and get back to .500. now, before the game, the a's placed ben sheets on the 15- day disabled list with a strained right elbow. sheets missed all of last season after having surgery on the same elbow to become the a's fifth starting pitcher to land on d. l. this season. it is supposed to be a bounce-back season for sheets where he showed he could finally could stay healthy with a 4.35 e.r.a. and back on the disabled list now. a fun ride into paris for alberto contdor, he has all but clinched the third career tour de france win. an the 32-mile time trial today, the shortest race and even shorter for johann who stumbled out of the blocks. and contdor leads by 37 seconds going into the final stage. and canadian open, carl pettersson with a chance to

become the fifth player in tour history to shoot a 59. oh, so close. he shoots a 60 to move into second place. dean wilson shoots his third straight round of 65 to stay atop the leader board. the hawaiian native has not won a pga event since 2006. steppen curry is one of 19 guys trying to make the usa roster for the world championships in turkey next month. the roster will be trimmed down to 15 following tonight's intra- squad scrimmage in las vegas and down to 12 when they head to turkey. >> whatever happens, definitely pleased to be working with everybody. and i don't want it to end there, i want to make it, and i want to make an impact, and that's a challenge i'm willing to take on. >> john miller grew up idolizing vince scully so how would the dodgers legendary play by play man introduce miller tomorrow when he gets

they do that, and even though it is three balls and no strikes, and then the president interjected and said he will hit it a long way and as soon as he said it, the pitch game in and the guy grooved it and cal blasted it into the left field stands and i got excited and i knew it was a homerun right i way and i started shouting and the president starts going "go, go." >> yes! >> yes! >> and clapping his hands. and so when you hear the play by play of this big historic moment and cal's historic game, i'm just sort of a disembodies voice in the background and the president of the united states was saying go, go. and then screaming. and i was a little put off by that at first. but then i thought, you know, that is really what it was all about. it was exciting for everybody. even the president of the united states. >> john miller about five decades and five major league baseball teams for him. >> incredible.
