gulf of mexico. now it appears bp's board has had enough of ceo tony hayward. bp is denying it so far, but it is expected hayward will be forced to step down today. >> i'm devastated. by the accident. absolutely devastated. >> reporter: unfortunately for tony hayward, too many of his comments about the disaster in the gulf spoke much louder than those. terry mcalister, energy editor of "the guardian" in london says the decision to oust hayward is an attempt to salvage the bp brand in america where the company earns 40% of its profits. >> the company cannot continue in its present state in america. the only way of giving itself a fighting chance is to get rid of the boss. >> reporter: hayward provided all the rope necessary to hang himself. they say the geyser of oil poured daye daily into the gulf. hayward to britain "sky news" -- i think the environmental impact

of this disaster is likely to be very modest. and this -- >> nobody wants this over more than i do. i would like my life back. >> reporter: congress accused him of stonewalling their investigation into the spill. two days later hayward went sailing off the isle of wight. >> hayward hit all the negatives. he did everything wrong from a crisis management perspective. >> reporter: hayward's replacement is said to be bob dudley, a newcomer to bp's board. he joined 18 months ago. he was considered for ceo in 2007 but lost out to hayward. most significant, dudley is an american. born just 65 miles from the gulf coast. bp is expected to report huge second quarter earnings on tuesday, $5 billion, plenty to pay off hayward's severance and pension, totalling nearly $17 million. but those profits are swamped by the amount bp has set aside for gulf claims and clean-up. $15 billion so far, but not

nearly enough, according to most experts. cbs news, forecast. in the gulf today, efforts to plug the bp well for good are resuming after being shut down by tropical storm bonnie. so far, the temporary cap on the shattered well head is holding, but to stop the leak permanently, a relief well must be completed. drilling on that relief well should resume in a few days. meanwhile, the gulf shoreline is being inspected to determine if the storm pushed more oil onto beaches and into sensitive marshlands. in washington this morning, the obama administration is furious over a very different kind of leak. thousands of pentagon documents on the war in afghanistan made public by a website based in sweden. tara mergener is in washington with the latest on this. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, betty. these files give a very detailed account of the years in question from full military logs to hundreds of key events.

the white house is condemning what's being called one of the biggest leaks of intelligence history. sunday whistle-blower website wikileaks posted more than 90,000 classified military records detailing six years of the afghanistan war. the bombshell leak includes unreported incidents of afghan civilian killings and covert operations against taliban figures. "the new york times" was granted early access to the documents and say they also is suggest the u.s. feared that pakistan may have actually helped the taliban. in a statement sunday, national security adviser general james jones called the leak a threat to national security, which could put the lives of americans and our partners at risk. the documents are largely what's called raw intelligence, reports from junior officers in the field that analysts use to advise policymakers. the wikileaks website first gained international attention in april when it posted this

classified helicopter cockpit video of a 2007 attack in baghdad. the clip apparently shows u.s. army helicopters firing on suspected insurgents. but among the dead were believed to be two journalists. the military has charged 22-year-old army specialist bradley manning with passing along the information. as for this latest leak, one u.s. official says it may take days to comb through all of the documents and figure out exactly how much damage has been done. and the site says the documents, quote, don't generally cover top-secret operations and they say they are delaying the release of 15,000 other documents until further review. betty, back to you. >> tara mergener joining us live in washington. thank you. in afghanistan this morning, the u.s. military is hunting for two american servicemen. apparently ambushed by the taliban on friday. their shot at vehicle was found 80 miles south of kabul, far from where they were supposed to be. the military distributed

leaflets offering a $25,000 reward for the men who are with the navy and were assigned to train afghan troops. the taliban says one was killed in the ambush. the other captured alive. admiral mike mullen, chairman of joint chiefs of staff had this to say in kabul. >> there is a tremendous amount of effort going on to find them, to search. and beyond that, i wouldn't -- i can't discuss any additional details at this point in time. >> it's unclear how the two sailors strayed into taliban-controlled territory. u.s. and south korea navy ships are conducting war games this morning despite north korean threats of retaliation. off the east coast involve 20 warships including the aircraft carrier the "uss george washington." the focus is on antiaircraft warship.

on the "cbs moneywatch," stocks in asia edged up this morning. ashley morrison is here in new york with the latest on that. good morning, ashley. >> asian stocks got a lift from european banks passing stress tests last week. japan's nikkei gained nearly 1% while hong kong's hang seng was also up. today wall street gets the latest on the housing market. last week strong corporate earning reports put investors in a buying mood. the dow gained 2% wiping out all losses for the year while the nasdaq tacked on more than 4%. a major battle is looming over the expiration of bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy. timothy geithner said he backed letting those expire for those making $250,000 or more a year to help bring down the deficit. most republicans and democrats on capitol hill strongly disagree. arguing it could endanger the economic recovery. the tax cuts were passed by congress under president bush in

2001 and 2003. the ford explorer is making a big comeback. today the automaker will roll out a new marketing campaign for the vehicle that helped launch the 1990's suv boom. the vehicle has been resigned. it's now built on a car platform, not one for a truck, so it will sit lower, more fuel efficient and also not as powerful. this year's model, which is due in dealerships this winter, will not have a v8 engine. at the movies, a battle of superstar action thrillers. leonardo dicaprio "inspection" won the weekend box office taking in $43.5 million to hold off the new angelina jolie spy flick "salt." it was a stronger than expected weekend for "inception." most analysts thought jolie would knock leonardo off his perch. those are two movies i would like to see. >> good reason to go to the movies. thank you, ashley. appreciate it. joining us live here in new york. just ahead on the morning news -- extreme weekend weather

the tunnel while people continued to stream in at the other end. back here at home, it was a weekend of extreme summer weather across the country. on sunday, powerful storms hit the east coast, knocking down trees and power lines. one woman died and thousands were left without electric power near washington, d.c. rising floodwaters caused an iowa dam to break. cynthia bowers reports. >> reporter: up to 9 inches of rain in less than a day burst a dam, sending water 45 feet down into the maquoketa river. what was once a hydroelectric dam had stood for almost 90 years. downstream in monticello, a town of about 3600, a sewage plant is under water. the clean-up will be messy. >> there's going to be a lot of people in a lot worse shape than we are. we'll have a mess in the basement. we'll have to get -- cut out drywall and start over again. >> reporter: other parts of iowa are picking up the pieces after dangerous storms -- >> get inside! >> reporter: including a tornado.

several storms also caused flooding in chicago. >> never seen it in the city. unbelievable. >> reporter: thunderstorms hit further east in new york city, bringing temperatures there down from a high of 93. a record spell up and down the east coast and virginia it was 105 in richmond and norfolk. in north carolina, charlotte hit 103. raleigh touched 102. elsewhere, excessive heat warnings and advisories covered parts of 13 states. in the nation's capital, it was 99 degrees, as the boy scouts of america celebrated a sweaty 100th anniversary. some meteorologists think a recurring el nino which warmed the waters in the pacific are to blame. >> every 11 years it seems like, '55, '56, '88, '89, now 2010, you have an extraordinary amount of record temperatures in the

here's some cities across the country. new york, sunny, 90 degrees. miami, 90 as well. chicago, sunny as well, but 83. denver, partly cloudy, 84. l.a., a sunny 80 degrees today. time for a check of the national forecast. the latest satellite picture shows a band of clouds stretching over the mid-atlantic states. the northern plains and northeast are looking at clear skies. and in the southwest, there are clouds swirling around along an isolated thunderstorm, i should say, but later today, showers and storms are hanging over the southeast. in the northern plains, a storm system will introduce severe weather into the region. in the northeast, it is warm, but less humid with plenty of sunshine. and in the southwest, partly cloudy skies could yield a few thunderstorms in the afternoon hours. in sports, the texas rangers increased their lead in the american league's western division. josh hamilton of texas drove in three runs against second place los angeles angels.

the rangers' 6-4 win puts them seven games ahead of the angels. in the 11th inning wes helms of the marlins hit a bases loaded single for their fourth walkoff win this week. the 5-4 florida victory cuts atlanta's division lead to five games over philadelphia. in the tenth inning, travis ishikawa of the giants hit a ground ball single to take the lead. san francisco held on for a 3-2 win over arizona. in the 11th inning lopez of st. louis hit the go ahead home run and the cardinals beat the chicago cubs 4-3. st. louis now has a half game lead over cincinnati in the national league central division. and andre dawson is now in baseball's hall of fame. the former cubs and expos outfielder was inducted sunday in cooperstown. he was an all-star eight times and is one of only three major league players to hit over 400 home runs and steal over 300

that's a lot to capture in just one day. this morning on "the early show," comedian steve carell. i'm betty nguyen. carell. there's oil out there we've got to capture. my job is to hunt it down. i'm fred lemond, and i'm in charge of bp's efforts to remove oil from these waters. bp has taken full responsibility for the cleanup and that includes keeping you informed. every morning, over 50 spotter planes and helicopters take off and search for the oil. we use satellite images, infrared and thermal photography to map and target the oil. then, the boats go to work. almost 6,000 vessels. these are thousands of local shrimp and fishing boats organized into task forces and strike teams. plus, specialized skimmers from around the world. we've skimmed over 27 million gallons of oil/water mixture and removed millions more with other methods. we've set out more than 8 million feet of boom to protect the shoreline. i grew up on the gulf coast and i love these waters. we can't keep all the oil from coming ashore,

but i'm gonna do everything i can to stop it, and we'll be here as long as it takes to clean up the gulf.

wedding bells are in the air in the small town of rhinebeck, new york, where chelsea clinton is reportedly getting married on saturday. everyone is clamoring for details but few people are talking. elaine quijano reports. >> reporter: in the one stoplight village of rhinebeck, new york, nestled in the postcard perfect hudson valley, all signs indicate chelsea clinton will marry marc mezvinsky here saturday. and the rumors are swirling. >> president obama's coming up the hudson in a private boat. and you know, the frog men will escort him. >> reporter: the clintons have not confirmed rhinebeck as the wedding location, but the mother of the bride told cbs news she's thrilled. >> i'm very excited.

i think she is a really responsible young woman. her fiancee is a wonderful young man. >> reporter: the mayor believes the rhinebeck rumor is true. what do you think this place is going to look like come saturday, july 31st? >> i think it's going to look like a circus. >> reporter: the trickle of details leaking out is now a torrent. the wedding will reportedly take place at the $12 million estate known as astor courts, 50 acres encompassing a five acre pavilion and owned by clinton donor. the hudson valley news spotted this newly erected tent on the grounds of the estate. executive editor jim langdon. >> our sources say it's going to be constructed in such a way it's going to be all glass on the riverside so the guests will be in there, air conditioned, but unimpeded view of the hudson. >> reporter: langdon has become the unofficial town cryer. >> are you getting a lot of inquiries from everyone? >> questions. >> reporter: wedding guests

including a-list celebrities will reportedly stay at the history he can beekman arms, where they say the owners have signed a confidentiality agreement. the rear her sal dinner is said to take place at a private estate nearby. gift bags will reportedly come from this boutique and include wine bearing the clinton name from a local vineyard. no relation to the former first family. wedding planners estimate the event could cost roughly $2 million, with 500 guests, that's $1,000 a head for catering alone. long done says the electricians are instructed what to wear. >> they've been instructed by the wedding planner they are to be attired in tuxedos so they blend in. they don't want guys sitting around in farmer jeans while passing the caviar. >> reporter: langdon also drove cbs news to a purported top-secret location where the clintons will be staying. >> you know what, they did close this since i took the picture.
