captioned by becky lyon." good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. a man has been hospitalized with life threatening injuries after being stabbed repeatedly and robbed by a group of young people in delores park in san francisco overnight. don knapp is at the park where neighbors say violence is up. don. >> reporter: that's right, ann. reports that a man just walking through the park as police say was attacked by a gang of young people, beaten, stabbed and robbed. troubles many people in the neighborhood that say violence is escalating at the park. andy wesley woke up to sirens earlier today then saw investigators chase the blood trail of a stabbing victim. >> then walking up stores there were cones at the top there. >> reporter: the male victim made his way over the foot bridge at 19th and church before collapsing. san francisco police spokesman saying the man is hospitalized with life threatening wounds. he says a group of a dozen or

more of a group confronted the man. three have been arrested and being held for attempted murder. it is a disappointment for a public park. only last week the park was filled with people who had come to enjoy a symphony program. neighbors say the park has a reputation as a family friendly and mellow place. >> mellow place. i have three kids and we used to come here all the time and now we are just -- sometimes we take our time to come. it is not the same any more. >> reporter: neighbors blame young crowds and alcohol for escalating violence in and around the park in recent years. >> i would say to some extent it is getting a little dangerous. >> are you worry about bringing your family to the park? >> i am. definitely on labor day weekends, 4th of july. late ate night. people are drinking and get out of control. >> what do you think needs to be done? >> more of a police presence. i know that's not a popular thing around this neighborhood.

>> reporter: andy wesley says he would like to do something to help out his neighborhood. >> i realize the police are stretched thin. they won't be on every corner. i'm part of this community and i would like to do something. i don't know what that is. >> reporter: it is a favorite hangout after the bar closes. the stabbing worries this neighbor. >> especially at night when i come back from the mission, i don't know, maybe i'm going to have to go around the park now. >> reporter: the victim described by police as a 40- year-old asian male remains in the hospital with those life threatening injuries. ann? >> don knapp in san francisco. thank you. a car smashed into a sonoma county restaurant while customers were eating dinner. and the incident at the hawaiian barbecue injured 11 patrons just after 11:00 p.m. last night. witnesses say the 65-year-old driver jumped the curb and smashed into the restaurant crashing into some customers. >> very busy shopping center.

a lot of folks here. people out on a friday night. >> the victim suffered cuts and possibly broken bones. the injuries are not life threatening. damage is estimated at 30 to $40,000. the cause of the crash is being investigated. fire crews are winning the battle against a wildfire in southern california. the fire started near the city of palmdale two days ago. it has burned 22 square miles of brush. about 2300 structures were in danger. luckily, though, no homes or buildings are threatened at this time. fire officials say the fire is about 60% contained at this time and they have lifted evacuation orders but some roads are still closed. today marks one year in captivity for three american hikers in iran. in san francisco bay area friends of the three uc berkeley graduates called on iran to free sarah shourd, shane bauer, joshua fattal and

offered messages of support for them. sarah mother's message. >> i know this coming together will be felt and appreciated by three young people in an iran prison and i know it will be noticed by the people who keep them there for no reason at all. >> tehran accuses the hikers with spying but has not charged them with anything. the san francisco event was one of several rallies today in london, paris, new york and other u.s. cities. san francisco police are searching for a woman who may have scammed potential renters out of thousands of dollars. they all gave her money to rent her apartment but no one was ever allowed to move in. robert lyles tells us there may be many more victims. >> she took my $5100. >> reporter: matt won't rest until 29-year-old rachel smith calls a jail cell home. creating this blob scammed by smith to warn everyone she is

on the loose. >> my wife is pregnant. we are going to have a baby. she knowingly ripped off a lot of people. >> reporter: he responded to a craigslist add smith posted offering her richmond district flat for $2400 a month with a backyard and end unit washer and dryer. it was a steal. >> it wasn't so inexpensive that you would think something was wrong but it was just enough below market that it seemed like a great deal. >> reporter: so he and his wife moved quick, signed a lease and wrote a check for $5100. they were supposed to move in today. that's how he met this man who does not want his name used. >> we were scheduled to get the keys today and our movers are coming tomorrow. so i was going to paint one of the rooms today myself. >> reporter: had you come here with your things? >> yes, the car back there has a ladder and paint. >> reporter: he lost $5400. he said smith's signature is on the back of his cancelled cheque. but get this, san francisco

police arrested smith last week after seven people came forward alleging they had been scalped out of $5600 each by smith. >> as of today there are 28 confirmed victims. >> reporter: as cbs5 stood outside the home talking with these two alleged scam victims another drove up. >> we had signed a lease and given first month and deposit. so i believe it was about $4500. >> reporter: a fourth victim joined the crowd but did not want to be videotaped. >> there were 26 yesterday. before that 20. and four, eight. people will see this tonight and i guarantee there will be more tomorrow. >> reporter: robert lyles, cbs5. >> we have posted the inspector's phone number on our website cbs5.com. click on crime for more information. well, after today vallejo will have even fewer crime fighting resources starting just after midnight. the police department's canine

and s.w.a.t. programs will be suspended for at least 90 days to help balance the budget. the department expects to save about $100,000. in san jose more firefighters turning their gear in today. layoffs started yesterday after a firefighters union contract dispute with the city. but tomorrow firefighters say they will have a major announcement about the dispute though we are not exactly sure what they are going to say. a new trend at bay area farmer's markets and it changes the way some customers pay for their produce. two candidates were invited but only one was there. jerry brown attacks meg whitman for not showing up. i'm lawrence karnow. lots of clouds by the afternoon after starting with lots of clouds and fog. here comes the fog again though. we will talk about that next. ,,,,,,,,,,,,

particular neighbor. what a farmer's market is doing to better serve their neighborhood. >> reporter: on the second week of the new farmer's market at the cal palace it is miss clark's first visit. >> it is really a wonderful treat. >> reporter: she gets government help with food purchases, what used to be called food stamps. >> i'm serving the country as a volunteer around here. i'm able to get them to compensate for the low income i'm making. >> reporter: but over the last decade california has been giving out a card called electronic debit transfer and there are still a lot of places it can't be used. >> if you want to try one go ahead and try one. >> reporter: what's a farmer going to do with a plastic payment? >> how much would you like on it. >> reporter: enter the government provided atm-like machine that allows farmer's markets to cash in on government benefits. >> it was an easy transition

for us. swipe the card, give them their token and they spend them. pretty simple. >> reporter: ron runs 11 farmer's markets around the bay area and three of them now offer the machines. in the future all of them might. there is a bill in the state assembly that would mandate it by 2012. it is good news for vendors. >> it helps a lot. helps people come out. can shop around. helps a lot. >> reporter: and for the people no longer limited in where they can shop especially in a neighborhood like this where the income and variety levels are low. >> there are no grocery stores at least in visitation valley in my neighborhood. >> good idea for people to be able to get fresh food. >> absolutely. everyone has the right to fresh, good and local produce. we want to make it available and as easy as possible. >> reporter: the farmer's market here at cal palace will be open every saturday through october 18th unless if it is a real success they will consider keeping it all year around.

democratic gubbernattorrial jer republic brown recalled that his parents rejected when he planned to become a priest and spoke about his experiences working with the pool alongside mother theresa in calcutta. and he got some digs in at meg whitman who missed the forum. >> i would like to know. i was quizzed on that. so it is not just what she wants it is what the community groups in california would like and then how do we work out some mutually agreeable schedule. >> brown also talked about his role as attorney general in defending prop 8. he hopes the case will ultimately be decided by the supreme court.

now looks like as we head towards tomorrow mostly sunny skies by the afternoon. temperatures. 80s in toward the tri-valley. antioch and brentwood in the 90s. 60s in toward richmond and oakland. 50s to 60s out toward the coastline. maybe drizzle to start the day in the morning. temperature of 81 degrees right now in concord. 79 in fairfield. cool 58 in san francisco. you'll find hotter temperatures traveling around the state especially towards the interior. 93 in fresno. about 79 degrees in lake tahoe. this trough of low pressure has been camping out along the west coast and it will continue to do so. there will be some minor fluctuations over the next couple days but just got more fog on the way. not going to be able to get rid of it. looking out over the next seven

to ten days we look good around the west coast with not a big change in weather. fire danger staying down. good news. but we do have lots of low cloud and fog to contend with in the early morning hours then by about the middle of the day it starts to clear out pretty nicely. so you see a lot of sunshine away from the immediate coastline. temperatures running well below the average for this time of year and will continue to do so. 50s and 60s out toward the coast. 70s expected as you make your way in towards the santa clara valley. sunny skies everywhere in the east bay but more comfortable temperatures, warm in livermore at 84. 90 in brentwood and antioch. north bay temperatures in the 60s and also the 70s. so you get the idea. pretty decent weather. temperatures warming up a few degrees.

"meg whitman says she'll run california like her company..." seen this attack on meg whitman? who are these people? they're the unions and special interests behind jerry brown. they want jerry brown because, he won't "rock the boat," in sacramento. he'll be the same as he ever was. high taxes. lost jobs. big pensions for state employees. the special interests have chosen their governor. how about you?
