7:09 am
the right wing, which is where most of the country is not. you are talking about candidates who want to take the time back to before social security. the one who is want to overturn a lot of the things, reform that is the country is behind. so i think what democrats have to do is talk about what it is they are standing for and why the country doesn't want to go back to a time when frankly a lot of us were much worse off. >> kevin, when you look at this from the republican perspective, there are some of those messages, there is competition from the tea party, from those perhaps to the extreme right as tanya mentioned, but search essentially is this a republican race to lose, and if so, what do they have to do to hold on to it? >> to tanya's point and your question, this race is going to be one, the midterm elections are going to be decided in the middle. and right now those independent voters that were a big part of the democrats' successful coalition by whipping in 2008, they have abandoned the white house and they have abandoned democrats in large part because
7:10 am
of the spending, because of the deficits, because of a very lack of center agenda. so i think where republicans feel we have an opportunity is talking to the voters and persuading them that the democrats have taken the country in the wrong direction. the country is on the wrong track. we are spending too much money. deficits are going too high and we can do a better job. right now we have to go out there and talk about a proactive agenda, but it is a good place to go when you are the alternative to a democrat agenda. >> in some ways it sounds like 2008 all over again. you talk about the moderates and independents during the 2008 elections, which worked out well for the democrats, tanya. this time around you said they need to altar the message a little bit, but what about the president doing fund-raising, does he need to worken on a different message or is he doing the right thing? >> well, right now we are seeing that the president is having some troubles in the polls. he's certainly polling lower than he has at any time during his presidency, which is not unusual for any president at this point in his term, but i
7:11 am
think what we are really seeing president obama being effective in is fund-raising. in order for democrats to get the message out, they will need a lot of money. again, as kevin pointed out and you pointed out, the real competition here is for the moderates and for independents. in order for democrats to get them back on board, they have to explain why the alternatives are far too extreme. >> kevin, in terms of a message from your end, from the republican side, there's been a lot of criticism, and we heard it from the president in bill's package that republicans are presenting new ideas. i know you disagree with that. >> i disagree with that, yes. >> are they presenting their arguments soldly enough? >> yes, i believe so. when john boehner handed the gavel to nancy pelosi in 2006, he said we are going to be an opposition party, but we are going to disagree with you on substance. if you look at the health care debate and the stimulus debate, republicans presented the american public alternatives. a fission for what they would do
7:12 am
and where they would take the country in a different direction. in large part that will be where you can win in the arguments in 2010. we can say, look, the democrats want to spend more and grow this part of government, we presented alternatives during the entire debate that said we are for smaller government, we are for lower taxes, and we are for less spending. and that we are the better party to lead the country in the right direction. >> well, everyone will be trying to get their message out, especially ramping up with three months to go. tanya acker, kevin madden, great insight. it will be an interesting november? >> i think we can say that, yes. >> safe to say, jeff glor is here with the rest of the morning headlines for us. good morning to both of you. good morning to everyone at home. in the gulf this morning, bp is prepared to begin the bottom kill operation. the final part of its effort to once and for all seal the broken oil well. cbs news correspondent mark strassmann is in new orleans this morning with the latest. hey, mark, good morning. >> reporter: hey, jeff. good morning to you. bp now says its static kill

the initial search was massive search and rescue looking for presumably lost and alive 7-year-old boy. this is a different type of search. this is a search for forensic evidence of criminal activity. one of the clues of course is going to be the spacing of the searchers themselves, what they're looking for and what we heard in the last report, is that it does look like the grand jury process is starting to squeeze critical information out of people that may have been reluctant to tell investigators without the power of subpoena. >> is that why this friend spicher was able to come forward now with these tips at this time, the grand jury process? >> as we talked about before, chris, on this very program, spicher was not reportedly very cooperative with investigators but when you put somebody under oath in a grand jury with penalty of perjury and perhaps even with the threat of additional prosecution for their own criminal conduct, that tends to squeeze information out. so, it looks like dede is opening up. these investigators -- this is not a search and rescue. this is a forensic search for criminal evidence. more than likely, something very specific that dede told them about. could very well be one of these
